LA MESA (CNS) - A 29-year-old man was shot multiple times and died in a La Mesa shopping center, police said Saturday. The shooting happened at 9:38 p.m. Friday in the parking lot of the Marketplace at Lake Murray Village, 5600 Lake Murray Blvd., according to Lt. Greg Runge of the La Mesa Police Department.Police received multiple calls of gunshots heard in the parking lot, Runge said. One caller reported seeing a victim down on the ground."Responding officers located the unresponsive victim and discovered he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the upper torso," Runge said.Officers began CPR and rendered aid until medics arrived, the lieutenant said. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.A witness reported seeing a dark sedan, possibly a two-door, leaving the scene at a high rate of speed southbound on Lake Murray Boulevard, Runge said, but it was unknown if the vehicle was involved in the shooting.Anyone with information about the crime was asked to call the La Mesa Police Department at 619-667-1400, or the Crime Stoppers' anonymous toll-free tip line at 888-580-TIPS. 1103

LAKELAND, Fla. — An 85-year-old man was bitten by an alligator at a retirement community Monday afternoon, FWC says.Officials say the alligator was 9-feet-9-inches and trappers pulled it out of a pond Monday afternoon. It happened at the Cypress Lakes Retirement Community. The man was reportedly bitten on the foot and taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center where the extent of his injuries are not known at this time. The community posted on its Facebook page about the incident and reminded residents about safety around alligators.Jane Rickel lives here and says trappers found the man’s white sneaker in the gator’s mouth confirming they got the right one.“His wife heard him screaming supposedly. And I guess his neighbor came to his rescue. There isn’t a pond in here that doesn’t have alligators,” she said. 828

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Local cannabis shops are sounding the alarm, saying higher state tax rates set to take effect next year will drive more customers to the black market.Starting January 1, the state will change the way it calculates the excise tax on all marijuana products, effectively raising the rate by 12.5 percent. The state will also adjust a fee charged to growers by the rate of inflation, raising it to .65 per ounce of flower from .25 per ounce.Marijuana is also subject to sales tax and local taxes, which at the Reserve dispensary in La Mesa is an extra 8.5 percent and 4 percent respectively.RELATED: Exclusive: Police raid illegal Chula Vista pot shop, as prosecution efforts ramp up“What we have here is a clean, safe product, but those extra taxes push people away because they don’t want to spend the extra money,” said Reserve budtender Owen Horsman. “And when that happens, they go and find their product at an unlicensed or illegal spot.”Industry analysts estimate the illegal market still overshadows California’s legal industry, capturing dollars for every spent at a licensed shop.Reserve owner Gregg Holda said the higher taxes will only widen the price gap between the two markets, and further incentivize customers to buy unlicensed cannabis products, which may be counterfeit or untested.“Unfortunately you could be consuming pesticides, molds, stuff that’s really bad,” he said.RELATED: 6 arrested at Chula Vista pot dispensaryIn a statement, the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration said the changes were required by the language of Proposition 64. The agency said it analyzed thousands of transactions and determined the state excise tax wasn’t capturing 15 percent of gross receipts of all cannabis sales, as the law requires. The CDTFA is required to analyze cannabis transactions and set the tax rate every six months. The agency said the changes are designed to capture the appropriate amount of tax revenue that voters approved. The explanation has not reassured marijuana industry leaders.“We believe that the CDTFA’s decision to increase tax burdens on compliant operators is counter to developing a safe industry,” said the California Cannabis Industry in a statement. 2246

LEMON GROVE, Calif. (KGTV) -- People on social media are outraged after video shows a security guard questioning a mother's immigration status in a Target parking lot. The woman who recorded and posted the video, Sonia Serrano Zavala, says the guard was asking the mother if she is here legally when she started recording. The unidentified security guard can be heard in the video saying, "You’re illegally here and you’re having babies and you’re probably on welfare."The woman, seen holding a baby in the parking lot, was reportedly asking for money. Midway through the video, the security guard says "it's a scam" and claims the woman has a car and a condo. As of Sunday afternoon, the video received more than 600,000 views. The incident took place at a Target located in the Marketplace at the Grove Shopping Center near San Deigo. WARNING: The video below contains graphic language.  936

LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - Famed stage and screen actor John Leguizamo returns to the La Jolla Playhouse, this time behind the scenes as the co-writer and creative mind behind the new show, "Kiss My Aztec."This is Leguizamo's third show at the LJP. His previous two, "Latin History for Morons" and "Ghetto Klown" both went on to Broadway. But those were one-man shows; "Kiss My Aztec" is a full-size musical production."San Diego's always been great for me," Leguizamo told 10News while promoting the show. "It's a really well-trained theater audience that knows how to watch a work in progress.""Kiss My Aztec" tells the story of a group of Aztec rebels as they fight against Spanish colonization in the 16th century. It's a pretty heavy subject that deals with the loss of their culture, but Leguizamo shows it as a musical comedy and a love story."I felt like the Aztec conquest was ripe with musicality," he said."We're investigating Latin identity," said director Tony Taccone. "We are kind of in the past, but we're speaking directly to the audience right now.""People need to laugh right now," Taccone added. "They need to celebrate who they are and the culture and what they can do, not what they can't do."The show did an extended run at the Berkeley Rep Theater before coming to San Diego. It runs through Oct. 13. TIckets are available at the La Jolla Playhouse box office or online. 1400
