SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A beloved Poway tradition is facing accusations of animal cruelty and breaking the law.A lawsuit filed this week claims horses were illegally shocked in the 2018 Poway Rodeo to cause them to buck wildly for crowds. Two animal activist groups filed the suit; Showing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK) and Animal Protection and Rescue League (APRL).Investigators with SHARK captured video during the 2018 Poway Rodeo, which they say proves an illegal device was used. The video appears to show someone with the rodeo shocking a horse in the holding chute just before releasing them into the rodeo arena.California law outlaws an electric prod or similar device from being used on any animal once the animal is in the holding chute, unless necessary to protect the participants and spectators of the rodeo.The plaintiffs are seeking a temporary restraining order before September's rodeo in hopes to get a court order preventing these devices from used.The animal groups notified the San Diego Humane Society of the alleged abuse, but humane law officers say they got the complaint too late to do a proper investigation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A family of five was displaced after a fire erupted in their City Heights kitchen Tuesday.The fire began in the kitchen of a home in the 3700 block of 41st St. According to San Diego Fire-Rescue Capt. Juan Flores, the fire appeared to begin accidentally in the cooking area as food was being prepared.Six units responded, keeping the fire isolated to the kitchen of the residence, Flores added.The family, two adults and three children, were displaced by the fire. The Red Cross is currently helping them.No other units on the property were damaged. 576

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former gang member who turned his life around in stunning fashion just got accepted to four different universities, including UC Berkeley and UC San Diego. 10News first met Apollo in 2010, as he and several others went to court to get off a gang injunction list for an Oceanside street gang.  An injunction prevents gang members from doing activities in certain areas, like associating with each other.  At that time, Apollo told us he had been out of the gang for several years after four years inside as a teenager."What hurt the most is hurting my mother... You want to amount to something, so (when i decided to get out) I'm trying to do this for her," said Apollo.Apollo was removed from the list about a year later, which is a rare feat. Among the requirements: written explanations, background checks, and approval from prosecutors and a judge.Since then, he has gone on to Palomar College, earned awards at speech and debate competitions, and at the age of 30, he just got accepted to four schools, including UC Berkeley and UCSD.  He's leaning towards Berkeley, though he isn't sure he can pay for it.  He's hoping to have a career in communications or social welfare so that he can help his community."Sometimes I can't believe it and sometimes I feel I should be doing more.  You want to leave something for them to look at, to hopefully inspire them to do more and succeed," said Apollo. 1473

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A boy who went missing on his way home from school Tuesday afternoon has been found safe, police say. The boy’s parent’s called police to report him missing around 2:15 p.m. Tuesday. Police could be seen in San Diego's Skyline neighborhood searching for the boy. Police say the boy usually walks home from school. According to police, the 9-year-old was found at a McDonald's. 405

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Camp Pendleton Marine was taken into custody this week after border officials say the Marine was trying to smuggle immigrants through a port of entry.The junior-enlisted Marine was taken into custody early Monday morning by U.S. Customs and Border Protection personnel at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, according to the 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton. The Marine was reportedly bringing undocumented immigrants into the port.The Marine is being held in civilian custody and CBP and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service were investigating. The lead authority in the case has not been determined.RELATED: Attorneys for Marines accused of human smuggling call public arrests illegalThe Marine was not part of military personnel currently serving at the border to assist CBP and Border Patrol agents, Camp Pendleton said.The Camp Pendleton Marine is the latest military member from the base to be charged in an immigration scandal. In July, 23 Marines were detained over human trafficking, drug distribution, and weapons charges, according to the base.Of those 1st Marine Division Marines, six have pleaded guilty at court martial appearances. Thirteen Marines have approved pre-trial agreements requesting separation from the Marines instead of court martials or waiving separation board processes.
