SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Cool zones are open around San Diego County as the weather heats up. The cool zones, spread out throughout the county, provide designated air-conditioned facilities that provide a place to beat the heat. According to county officials, the cool zones provide a place where seniors and others can congregate to protect their health and reduce individual energy costs. The program has been in operation since 2001. The County Health and Human Services Agency Aging and Independence Services partners with San Diego Gas and Electric to provide the service. Be your most physically active during the coolest part of the day, usually between 4-7 a.m. Pace yourself when engaging in physical activity.Stay indoors as much as possible. If air conditioning is not being used, stay on the lowest floor. Keep shades down and blinds closed, but windows slightly open.Electric fans do not cool the air, but they do help sweat evaporate, which cools your body.Take a cool shower, bath or sponge bath.Avoid using the oven.Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing. Light colors will reflect away some of the sun's heat.Air out hot cars before getting into them.Never leave children or pets inside vehicles at any time, even with the windows cracked. Temperatures inside a vehicle can reach lethal levels no matter what the weather is like.Drink more fluids than usual even if you do not feel thirsty.Water is the safest liquid to drink during heat emergencies. Avoid drinks with alcohol or caffeine; they make the heat's effects on your body worse.Eat small meals and eat more often. Avoid foods that are high in protein, which increases metabolic heat.Avoid using salt tablets unless directed to do so by a physician.If you take diuretics, ask your physician about a lower dosage during hot weather.If it is safe to do so, leave windows open at night. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the San Diego Padres reopened training camp - this time at Petco Park - a Padres fan is hoping to share one of the only seats in town for baseball.For the past eight years, Chip Messenger has leased a unit on the 15th floor in the Legend building, overlooking Petco Park."The view never disappoints. Everyone is always amazed," said Messenger.The view is about to become even more priceless because the Padres aren't expected to open up the stadium to fans when they start the season later this month. Messenger will have one of the only seats in town to watch live baseball."Looking for forward to it. I think people have been isolated and bored. Ready for something positive to happen," said Messenger.In late June, Messenger tweeted a photo of his view of Petco Park, sparking thousands of likes and hundreds of replies."They tell me, 'I'll bring the beer. I'll bring the fish tacos. Do you remember me from first grade? Do you need a new best friend?'" said Messenger.Messenger will be making a lot of new frends. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As a Hillcrest man showered in his apartment, an intruder was helping himself to a "priceless" pendant.The surveillance video that Ramon Castillo has seen countless times remains hard to watch."Scary and very disturbing," said Castillo.In late June on a Monday morning just before 9, Castillo was showering in his apartment on 3rd Avenue. What he didn't know know: he wasn't alone. When Castillo got out of the shower after 20 minutes, the screen door which had been locked was completely open. Surveillance video revealed why. In it, a man pauses at the door and somehow gets past the screen door, before quietly raiding the apartment. Among the items stolen were speakers and a safe from a bedroom closet. Inside the safe: cash, personal documents and jewelry, including a silver pendant containing the ashes of her mother. She passed away in 2015 from an accidental drug overdose."I can't replace that. It's the last thing of my mom and now I don't have anything," said Castillo.The thief who snatched it was in and out in about five minutes. He was seen driving off in a sedan. Castillo say the burglar had to have heard the shower running and went in anyways."He didn't think twice about it. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Another local man says he was shaken down by Mexican police, as Tijuana officials announced an investigation into the alleged incidents.Since January, 69-year-old Lupe Adame has been driving his truck back and forth from Escondido to Tijuana to help his friend renovate a home. On a Wednesday night in mid-June, he was returning from Tijuana, blocks from driving up to the line to cross the border, when he saw the police lights."Police car got over on my driver side and he said, 'Pull over!' ... Nowhere to stop, so I stopped in the middle of the road," said Adame.Adame says a heavyset officer in his 40s went to his door and told him he was being stopped because he had tinted windows.RELATED: San Diego couple says Tijuana shakedown possibly prompted by COVID-19 restrictions"And then I heard the back of my pickup open ... tailgate drop down ... I looked and my stuff was gone! So angry," said Adame.Adame says a second officer had grabbed all his tools — worth nearly 0 — and placed them the police car's back seat. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Carmen Favela was part of the duo that kicked off the Mujeres Brew Club, a Latina-led group that started in 2019 and teaches women the history and basics of craft beer."I thought to myself I wonder how many more women would like to learn more about craft beer, not just enjoy it but understand all of it," Favela said. Up until the COVID-19 pandemic, the club held their meetings at Border X Brewing in Barrio Logan."There is no way I could just cancel it because of COVID-19 or just stop it, it’d be hard for me. It became something I honestly didn’t expect and I knew this was something we needed in the industry," Favela described.Thankfully, Favela didn't have to because the answer wasn't far. It was right across the street at an old vacant taproom brewhouse."It's got a full brewing system and a tap system. One conversation led to another and we were in the space within 24 hours," Favela said.The new space is where the brew club continued to hold its meetings and will make and serve craft beer."Yes, we are minorities and yes it is going to be Latinas and women, but the amount of support and excitement from the girls, from the public ... the beers we plan to make to make there will be an expression of all the girls from all different, all colors basically," Favela said.They served coffee and other non-alcoholics drinks until their licensing got approved, but inside, excitement was overflowing."I think this will hopefully open that door to really celebrate more women in beer in San Diego," said Favela. 1549
