(KGTV) - An Uber driver says she was physically assaulted by a passenger Sunday night in La Mesa after a dispute over a mask."This is definitely the most insane experience driving with Uber that I've ever had," said Tia.Just past 6 p.m. Sunday, Tia, who first started driving for Uber last summer, arrived for a pickup outside the Echo Pointe apartments.Tia says a man and the passenger's sister ushered the passenger into the car with a warning for Tia: the passenger was drunk."She didn't have a mask on ... so I asked her if she could please put on a spare mask, which I had in the back seat. Took her awhile to put it on, but she did," said Tia.As the ride got started, Tia says her passenger wouldn't let it go."She said in a very snarky tone, 'Are you more comfortable now that I have a mask on?' She was very drunk, very belligerent, yelling," said Tia.Tia say she decided to end the ride."I was fed up with the disrespect," said Tia.Tia says she returned to the pickup spot and asked her to get out repeatedly, but the woman refused. Tia recorded some of it on her phone. Tia, who eventually called 911, says when she got out of the car and reached in to remove the woman's belongings, the passenger grabbed her neck from behind.According to Tia, the passenger became violent, chasing her around the car for several minutes, at one point hitting in the right eye. Tia says the passenger's sister and the man came out and subdued the woman, allowing Tia to drive away, and meet police and file a report."I was dumbfounded. I couldn’t believe I was assaulted for essentially wearing a mask ... People need to treat each other with respect. Wear a mask ... We're just trying to keep everybody safe," said Tia.Tia says she's still feeling pain in her eye but she's feeling better. She's hoping an arrest is made so a message is sent: this behavior is not acceptable.A La Mesa Police spokesperson says they are awaiting the report to be turned in by the officer before it is assigned to an investigator. 2030

(KGTV) - Dr. Greg Skomal and Meteorologist Joe Merchant are working together as they test a new theory on how sea breeze may correlate with set off a predatory chain reaction.So far their research has taken them to the Bahamas and Cape Cod, both locations on the East Coast, given several recent attacks. Skomal says, "It could be weather conditions it could be water temperature so were testing all these various factors to see if there's any patterns including Joe's ideas that drive the behavior of these sharks." Merchant believes a weather condition called a sea breeze may set off a predatory chain reaction. He says it brings nutrient rich deep water closer to the surface, attracting tiny marine life, which attracts larger fish and in turn attract the oceans largest predators, sharks. Fisheries Research Biologist Heidi Dewar tells 10News, "On the East Coast you have the warm Gulf Stream that moves broad on a continental shelf and our coast we have a cold current coming from the north and a very narrow continental shelf." For this reason, we may not be able to use the same theory for our coast."It's not clear that would translate to the West Coast; we have a very different ecosystem over here," Dewar tells 10News. Dewar says pinpointing sharks' locations and predicting where they will be next is going to require much more data and research. Lisa Kendall and Doug Spainhower have spent years, along with their neighbors, working to make their neighborhood more safe from wildfires.“The less burnable material that you have, then the more likely your house is to survive a wildfire," said Kendall.They’ve been clearing the area around their entire neighborhood in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, which has one road in and out and is surrounded by forests, with dead trees, downed trees and debris.“You have this home, you paid money for it, it only costs a little bit more to do this defensible space work to give these firefighters a chance to be able to defend your home,” she said.“I’ve been right in the middle of forest fires, so it scares the hell out of me,” Doug Spainhower said. One that can withstand a fire. We’re not there yet,” Lipsher said. “But I think we have made some truly innovative strides.”An example lies just north of Downtown Frisco, where Summit Fire & EMS is located. Lipsher said they completed a controversial clear cut around a neighborhood as a precaution, but that cut played a part in saving those homes from the Buffalo Mountain Fire in 2018.“It was a human-caused fire,” Lipsher said. The fire burned up to just a football throw from nearby homes. “When this fire started here, [the clear cut] was the saving grace for this neighborhood,” he said.Scorched trees are still standing today.“We’re seeing some unprecedented fire behavior and some really extreme fire behavior that, as a forester and a firefighter, we just haven't really seen in our lifetime managing these forests,” said Ashley Garrison, a Forester with the Colorado State Forest Service. “The effect these wildfires can have on the environment can really have these cascading event when they are these intense, large fires.”Garrison and Lipsher are just two of the men and women who spend their days working on wildfire mitigation, something Summit County has been focused on for more than a decade.“It’s been 15 years now since Summit County developed one of the first community wildfire protection plans,” Lipsher explained. “It was one of the first developed in the state and in the country.”As for making a community fireproof, that may be unachievable. “Quite frankly I think that will probably be a never ending quest,” he said. “Our existential threat here is wildfire. It's no different if you lived in Kansas with the threat of tornadoes, or if you lived in Miami and it’s the threat of hurricanes.” 3981
