SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The month of love is upon us, which means couples planning to tie the knot on Valentine's Day don't have long to request a ceremony with the county.The San Diego County Clerk’s office is accepting appointments for couples wanting to renew their vows or get married on Feb. 14."We are excited to offer walk-in services at our historic downtown office on the waterfront for Valentine’s Day and don’t want couples to miss their chance at a Valentine’s Day wedding," said County Clerk Ernie Dronenburg. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The environmental community is concerned that individuals using masks are disposing of the face-covering properly.Dimitri Deheyn is a Scripps Institution of Oceanography research scientist and studies biodegradable objects, something disposable masks are not. He said around the world, researchers are seeing an increase in trashed masks on beaches, which will ultimately end up in the ocean and harm wildlife and our ecosystem.In addition, when the disposable masks are thrown away, the string can become a danger to animals if not cut, so he said if you have to use disposable masks, cut the string that goes around the ear.Deheyn has been working with a company based in Austria called Lenzing that typically makes eco-friendly comfortable clothing from fibers that can degrade, making them better for the environment. He said the company shifted to making biodegradable masks when the pandemic hit, and he’s helped test them.“Basically test them, we put them in the seawater and see if they degrade and yes they degrade,” he said.He said there are U.S. companies that make a similar product, and this is what people should be wearing instead of disposable masks. He said reusable masks are another solution to helping save the environment.“If you are acting as an individualistic human being, and you oppress nature, at the end this could be very bad for us as a human society,” he said, encouraging everyone to do their part. 1457

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The elderly victim of a brutal home invasion in Clairemont last week is relieved two of the three suspects are in custody. John Slobig, 59 and Terry Jones, 53 are due in court Wednesday afternoon in connection with last Wednesday's home invasion in the 4600 block of Firestone Street.Eighty-seven-year-old Paul Schmidt suffered injuries to his head, arms, and wrist during the attack. "I was very grateful for the work that the police did, " said Schmidt. Schmidt said he's lived in the home for fifty-three years and never felt unsafe. "I know that drugs have been so dominant in our society lately that it's a whole different world that we're living in. Things we used to take for granted, you can't anymore," said Schmidt. Schmidt was installing a ceiling fan when he says three men burst through his front door."All of a sudden, these three guys come in and said this is a robbery and he grabbed scissors and walked up to me and said don't mess with us. I didn't want to die that day, and there was three. I'm one guy, I'm 87, I'm not as tough as I used to be," said Schmidt. He tried to pull one of the intruders by his beard, that's when Schmidt says one of the robbers hit him over the head with a ceiling fan blade."The one guy was higher than a kite; the one they have in custody, he was really a terrible person." Police say the trio ransacked the home and took off in the victim's truck, which was recovered. The suspects have lengthy criminal records. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The coronavirus pandemic has put extra pressure and stress on families across San Diego. Now, experts worry that could be leading to a rise in child abuse."It's extraordinarily troubling," says Dr. Shalon Nienow, the Child Abuse Pediatrics Program's Clinical Director at Rady Children's Hospital's Chadwick Center."Since we started the pandemic, our volume has increased," Dr. Nienow says, noting that outpatient services are up 82% and inpatient treatment is up 75% since mid-March.Studies over the last decade have shown that economic struggles often lead to increases in child abuse. Nienow believes the Pandemic coupled with the economic downturn, has made it worse."People are isolated," Dr. Nienow says. "They don't have access to support services, and they're forced to take on roles they're not prepared for, such as being a teacher."The increased instances of child abuse and maltreatment may not be purely physical. San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan says her office has seen a dramatic increase in internet crimes against children during the pandemic. She says the amount has quadrupled since March."Kids are at home, they're on their tablets," Stephan explains. "On the internet, the predatory behavior of people trying to sexually exploit and recruit and get our kids to go into harm's way is really exploding... There is a direct correlation between kids being at home, out of school, out of their sports, and the increase of predatory and abusive crimes against them."Making matters worse, says Stephan and Dr. Nienow, is that the number of calls and reports of child abuse to Child Welfare Services has dropped dramatically since March.An ABC 10News Investigation in early April showed a nearly 60% drop in calls to CWS at the start of the pandemic. The county says now they're still seeing a 30% drop.In 2019, CWS fielded around 27,000 calls from April through August. In 2020, CWS took only approximately 19,000 calls."We certainly know families have more needs now than ever before and are struggling with all of the effects from the pandemic," says Dr. Kimberly Giardina, the Director of San Diego County Child Welfare Services.Experts believe the drop in calls is because kids are spending less time around teachers and doctors, who are legally required to report any signs of abuse they see."They tend to be a significant safety net for kids, and now that safety net is somewhat gone," says Dr. Nienow."Our teachers and counselors are the eyes and ears," adds Stephan. "They are the Safe Harbor."In their absence, the County and DA's office has launched training programs, which teach people how to recognize signs of abuse during online interactions like Zoom classes or telehealth visits. The county also authorized million in CARES Act funding to pay for community outreach and education.Stephan also sent a 7-page letter to Governor Gavin Newsom, detailing the scope of the problem. She asked him to take it into account when deciding whether or not to let schools reopen for in-person learning."I felt a responsibility that these alarming statistics become part of that conversation because the health of our kids and their safety has to be paramount," says Stephan.Dr. Giardina says Child Welfare Services is also working hard to make sure kids are safe. Their employees follow up on every call they receive and found ways to conduct in-person visits during the pandemic safely."We are out there," she says. "Our staff are working hard every day to make sure that those kids are safe."Experts all say it has become critical for parents, other family members, and neighbors to report any signs of abuse they see."Educate yourself," says Stephan. "Educate your children so that they can remain safe while we wait for our life to go back to normal and for kids to go back to school and to the safety of having those mandatory reporters.""It takes a village to raise healthy kids," says Dr. Nienow. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Surveillance footage captured a man attacking a gas station customer in Kearny Mesa before fleeing.A 54-year-old man was paying for his coffee at the Mobil station at 8380 Clairemont Mesa Blvd. on Saturday just after 3 p.m., when the suspect began speaking to the man. Police said the suspect was not making any sense when he was speaking to the victim.Then for no reason, the man pulled a small wooden bat from a tool bag and began to hit the victim on the back of his head.
