BEIJING, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- China's State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) on Friday moved to overhaul the supervision over country's dairy products in a bid to ensure food safety before the major Chinese festivals.Local food and drug administrations have been ordered to increase supervision over the trade and consumption of diary products and ensure that dairy products are not mixed with non-edible substances or food additives,read a notice posted on the SFDA's website.The SFDA asked restaurants to keep dairy product suppliers' contact information as well as valid documents which could help authorities identify the quality, specifications and expiration date of dairy products.Year-end is always a peak season for the Chinese to dine out, either with families or colleagues. The Spring Festival, or the Chinese lunar new year and the most important festival for the Chinese, falls on February 3.China's dairy industry was marred by a scandal in 2008, in which at least six infants died and almost 300,000 became ill across the country after consuming dairy products tainted with the industrial chemical melamine.To restore consumer confidence, the Chinese government launched a nationwide safety overhaul of dairy products in November 2008.

BEIJING, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping on Wednesday urged the Hong Kong-based Chinese General Chamber of Commerce (CGCC) to increase support for the local government and further contribute to regional economic development."Hong Kong's current situation is good in general, but it also faces many challenges. As an important patriotic group, the CGCC should shoulder its responsibilities to ensure and boost the region's prosperity and stability," Xi said in Beijing while meeting a visiting CGCC delegation.Xi noted that the group had been making great contributions to Hong Kong and the mainland by actively participating in the region's social affairs and economic development.Xi said Hong Kong had overcome problems created by the global financial crisis, and was undergoing a strong economic revival.Xi also said that the central government had been taking effective measures to support the region's economic development and improve local people's livelihoods.The CGCC, founded in 1900, is one of the oldest and largest non-profit organizations of local Chinese firms and businessmen in Hong Kong. BEIJING, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao appointed a new representative and ambassador to the World Trade Organization(WTO) and a new ambassador to Myanmar, according to a statement from the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) on Thursday.Yi Xiaozhun, 59, previously a vice commerce minister, was appointed representative and ambassador to the global trade body, replacing 64-year-old Sun Zhenyu, who was the country's first WTO representative since China's accession to the WTO in Dec. 2001.Li Junhua was appointed ambassador to Myanmar, succeeding the 54-year-old Ye Dabo.Prior to Thursday's appointment, Li was deputy director of the International Organizations and Conferences Department of the Chinese Foreign Ministry.The appointment was in line with the decision made by the Standing Committee of the NPC, China's top legislature.

YAOUNDE, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has agreed with Cameroon's President Paul Biya during a meeting here on Thursday that the two countries should expand cooperation and further promote bilateral relations.During their meeting, Hui said since the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Cameroon 40 years ago, the two countries have treated each other equally, friendly and with mutual trust. BEIJING, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- All China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) said Saturday it had allocated 2 million yuan (about 303,000 U.S. dollars) to relief efforts in Guizhou and Hunan provinces, where days of snow and icy rain have disrupted people's lives.Freezing weather in south China has forced the evacuation of at least 58,000 people from their homes over the past week, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.The hardest hit has been Guizhou and Hunan, which will continue to experience the inclement weather over the next three days, the National Meteorological Center (NMC) said Saturday.The ACFTU urged local trade unions to work closely with governments and related departments to minimize the impact of the bad weather on people's life.
