(KGTV) - For 250,000 San Diego County students, school is not just access to education, it is access to food.“We know that for many many of our students, the stable meal they can rely on each day is that breakfast and lunch they can normally get at school,” said SDUSD Trustee Richard Barrera.There are food distribution sites across the county where families can pick up meals for kids while school is not in session. These services will continue through the summer. While thousands are taking advantage of the food distribution sites, not everyone can physically get to the locations, so there is a new state resource to combat that.Pandemic EBT, or P-EBT, is available to students who are eligible for free or reduced price meals at school. Families can apply and get 5 per child on a card that can be used like a debit card at grocery stores or online. The money stays on the card for a year. That number was chosen based on an estimate of how much it would cost to feed a child through the summer.With about a million households applying in the first week, Anahid Brakke with the San Diego Hunger Coalition said there has been a delay with signing up, so anyone interested needs to have patience during the application process. She said it's currently taking about three weeks to process and warned that phone lines are currently backed up, adding that it could take until the end of July to process everyone.“If you apply, if you leave a voicemail, if you send an email, they are making their way through all of that. They’re hiring new staff at the state, they’re extremely committed to making sure everybody who is eligible get their card,” said Brakke.Families need to apply by June 30. If there is more than one child in a family, all of the money will come on one card and the oldest child’s name will be on the card.Barrera mentioned some of the feedback so far has been caution from families who are worried about sharing their information.“Some of our families have called us and said is this some sort of scam? Is somebody trying to get my information? No. Take advantage of this program. It’s meant to support you and your kids,” said Barrera.He said SDUSD is communicating this information through robocalls, so families should not be surprised if they get a voicemail with this information.Leaders also encouraged everyone to apply because families could be eligible if a parent recently lost a job or took a pay cut.According to a release, P-EBT was authorized under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act of 2020 which allows for states to apply to the USDA to run a P-EBT program to meet children’s nutritional needs. SAN DIEGO -- Nestled off of Camino Del Rio West in the Midway District, the Body Shop sits between a Navis Pack and Ship site and the "Les Girls" adult entertainment club on Riley Street. The Body Shop strip club welcomed customers for five decades before it closed last December. This week, Rock Church announced they'll be moving in. Rock Church has five campuses across San Diego County. They have a school and now, they have plans for the property in the Midway District. They said the purchase is about more than repurposing a strip club - it's about transforming the neighborhood. "We thought it was a great idea because we know the pain that goes on in that building," said Miles McPherson, pastor at Rock Church. "Not just the women, but the men who go there and their families.”The church’s main campus on Rosecrans is roughly a mile and a half away from the new property. "We don’t know what we're going to do with the building, we just know what it won’t be used for," McPherson said. For decades, parents have explained to their kids why there's a huge sign that says 'nude girls' in their neighborhood, he said. Soon, it won't be necessary."It would be nice to put 'Rock Church' on top of that billboard, but that's another step," he said. "We’ll get to that. But you know the people in that community have been looking at that building for 50 years, and hopefully we can put something more positive in that building.”In addition to taking over the building, McPherson said the church plans to do outreach in the community. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Anglers and biologists believe California is likely to experience an increase of chinook salmon during the fall run resulting from the coronavirus and fewer fish caught during the summer. The San Francisco Chronicle reported state and federal scientists earlier this year forecast more than 473,000 adult salmon off the San Francisco Bay Area coast from the Sacramento River system. The forecast is a big jump from 380,000 last year and 224,000 in 2018. The season for the fish also called king salmon was delayed from its scheduled opening, with more than two months of fishing shut down. 618

SAN DIEGO, Calif (KGTV) - New recommendations aim to help the thousands of teenagers living with depression who are suffering in silence. The American Academy of Pediatrics released new guidelines for primary care doctors to screen young people. They say 2 out of 3 depressed teens are not being identified by their doctors and not getting the care they need. One survey doctors can give to patients is just two questions, another is nine. The purpose is not to establish a final diagnosis but rather screen for depression in a "first step" approach. San Diego Pediatrician Jaime Friedman believes it's a positive step to help young people and that it will be fairly easy to incorporate into visits. She will soon be using tablets on which parents and teens can answer questions related to their visit, they'll also be able to conduct the depression screening on them. Doctors are also being advised to talk to families about safety plans, removing lethal medications or guns from the home to prevent suicide. The AAP recommends young people get screened at least once a year starting at age 12.  1144

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - The City of San Diego has a new challenge that promotes bike riding, exploring the community and supporting local businesses. The Better by Bike blog is website that features everything from bike routes, to bike repair tips, to features on local bike riders.Part of the new program is a scavenger hunt that takes riders through the mid-city area. It ends Aug. 30 and is a competition to see who can get the most points after visiting local businesses and answering questions. The challenges range from taking pictures of specific spots to describing murals painted by local artists. It uses the Scavify application. Winners will then be awarded prizes, including gift cards to local restaurants.Anisha Gianchandani is the Climate Advisor for the City of San Diego and said this is part of a bigger-picture project to decrease greenhouse gas emissions and make San Diego more livable.“So it’s really just a fun way to get outside safely, enjoy your neighborhood and support small local businesses,” she said, later adding that “when you slow down, you get to see so many parts of your neighborhood that you normally wouldn’t see in a car.”It also helps local businesses. Stores and restaurants had the chance to submit their locations to be part of the scavenger hunt, which brings foot traffic to the area.Juan Pablo Sanchez’s family owns Super Cocina, one of the stops on the scavenger hunt. They had a local artist paint a mural on their wall outside, and their question pertains to that art.“We want to encourage you to use these streets, to go through us, to see our culture, to see the people that live here,” said Sanchez.Rudy Vargas, a native to the City Heights area, has embraced the challenge, heading up the leaderboard. He said even though he is familiar with his home, he’s still learned new facts about his neighborhood.“It was a good way to revisit some of my favorite places in City Heights but also visit some places I didn’t even know existed,” said Vargas.Vargas said he first picked up a passion for riding bikes when commuting to SDSU as a student, and has since kept up the passion.“My hope is that we continue this culture change and we step away from our vehicles because like I said there’s no other feeling like it,” he said. 2286
