LAKELAND, Fla. — An 85-year-old man was bitten by an alligator at a retirement community Monday afternoon, FWC says.Officials say the alligator was 9-feet-9-inches and trappers pulled it out of a pond Monday afternoon.It happened at the Cypress Lakes Retirement Community.The man was reportedly bitten on the foot and taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center where the extent of his injuries are not known at this time.The community posted on its Facebook page about the incident and reminded residents about safety around alligators.Jane Rickel lives here and says trappers found the man’s white sneaker in the gator’s mouth confirming they got the right one.“His wife heard him screaming supposedly. LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) — This week, police say they arrested a La Mesa businessman, who was the subject of an inappropriate video posted online earlier this year, for violating a restraining order.La Mesa Police said Peter Carzis was arrested Tuesday and charged with violation of a domestic violence restraining order. Officers responded to the 8200 block of Lemon Avenue at about 6:30 p.m. for a report of a possible restraining order violation. Carzis was contacted by officers outside of an apartment complex.As part of an active restraining order, Carzis is ordered to stay 100 yards away from the protected party's address, police said. Officers found Carzis sitting outside of the residence.Last January, Carzis was captured on video allegedly committing a lewd act with a woman on the sidewalk outside his clothing store, Peter's Men's apparel on La Mesa Boulevard. The video was posted on a Facebook community page.When news crews returned to the area to speak with Carzis, he allegedly attacked news reporters and photographers who were attempting to interview him outside his business.Carzis has pleaded not guilty to felony vandalism charges and misdemeanor counts of battery and committing a lewd act in public. 1232

That’s the eye-raising message from the World Health Organization as COVID-19 cases continue to rise across the globe.“There’s no better way to convey trust. No better way to convey camaraderie and humanity," said Dave Sylvester.Sylvester is what you may call a prolific hugger, traveling across the country and around the world, helping people in need, like buying dinner for essential workers and volunteering.“I am the hug man. I am the human high-five. I am all of that stuff,” he said.He’s on his way to Las Vegas where he held a personal record of more than 1,300 hugs back in 2017. But the pandemic has changed his routine due to social distancing.“I have gone from an average of 47 hugs and high fives a day to 9 hugs and high fives…since March,” he said.This comes as the WHO Monday asked people not to hug to prevent spreading COVID-19, especially in places like the U.S. where cases are spiking.“It’s a horrible thing to think that we would be here as the World Health Organization saying to people, don’t hug each other. It’s terrible, but that is the brutal reality in places like the United States right now,” Dr. Michael Ryan, executive director of the health emergencies program with the WHO.Psychologists say hugs can be great for mental health as it releases hormones that help with empathy and trust. While it’s not as good as hugging a real person or your pets, they say you might try hugging your pillow, or even a stuffed animal.“Don’t discount one of the secondary methods until you’ve tried it,” Jessica Shearin, a local psychologist, said.Sylvester says it’s unfortunate to not hug as much but says that’s not stopping him from meeting others.“We understood the severity of everything that’s going on and we just shared a smile. Pete Ricketts doubled down on his opposition to medical marijuana in Nebraska on Monday after a legal challenge was mounted against a ballot measure seeking to legalize that in the state.“There is no such thing as medical marijuana,” Ricketts said during a press conference. “This is not something that would be prescribed by a doctor. It’s not going to be distributed through a pharmacy. These are dispensaries that would be in your communities.”Ricketts argued that in other states where it has been legalized, people show up to work “stoned” and are at greater risk for accidents on the job. He also argued that the cognitive development of children is impacted when they have access to marijuana."This is not a benign thing. This is a dangerous thing," Ricketts said.The comments come as the Nebraska Supreme Court is set to decide whether or not to let voters decide on medical marijuana in the state this November.Supporters of the measure had been collecting signatures for months, and Nebraska Secretary of State Bob Evnen said they had enough to qualify the measure for the ballot.But Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner filed a challenge against the measure on Friday. An attorney representing Wagner said it violates state rules requiring ballot measures to focus on a single question. He argued the measure poses two separate questions: whether residents should have the right to use marijuana for medical purposes, and whether private companies should be allowed to grow and sell it.Supporters of the measure called the legal challenge “a last-minute attempt to derail the precious right of the people.” They are confident the measure will survive the legal challenge.While Ricketts is opposed to the ballot initiative, he said the court will ultimately make the final decision on whether or not it should go before voters. LAKE MURRAY (CNS) - A 48-year-old man was taken to a hospital with multiple major fractures after hitting a Subaru WXR on the 5000 block of Campanile Drive, authorities said today.A 20-year-old behind the wheel of the car pulled out of an alley in front of the 2011 Kawasaki motorcycle, at 7:45 p.m. Saturday, while trying to drive north, according to Officer Robert Heims, with the San Diego Police Department.The motorcyclist was westbound on Montezuma Road and made a left turn southbound onto Campanile Drive, where the biker hit the car, Heims said.The driver of the Subaru had no injuries.
