(KGTV) — The holidays can be particularly difficult for service members overseas who are missing out on spending time with their family and friends during season.That's why every year, thousands of residents across the country try to spread some cheer with care packages to troops as a way to connect, build morale, and share in the joy that comes with the holidays.Even if it's a card, holiday gestures help spread the warmth of the season.DeadlinesThe U.S. Postal Service says cards and packages should be sent to APO/FPO/DPO addresses overseas. Those should be sent no later Dec. 11 (for cards, letters and priority mail packages) and Dec. 18 (for priority mail express military service, available to most destinations.)USPS has also created military care kits, including several free postal items, to help send packages overseas. Shipping guidelines can be found here.How to helpFor those unsure of how to help, there are a few options.One method is through the USO. The organization sends a variety of holiday care packages that can support up to 50 troops a piece depending on the option chosen. A link to their offerings, including phone calls home, comfort food packages, and more can be found here.Through Dec. 31, Johnson & Johnson will also match donations to the USO up to a total of 0,000.Other organizations facilitating care packages for troops include Operation Support Our Troops and Soldiers' Angels. A 552-carat yellow diamond was recently unearthed in Canada — the largest ever found in North America.Mining company Dominion Diamond Mines said in a press release on Thursday the diamond was discovered in October at the Diavik Diamond Mine in Canada's Northwest Territories.The "astonishing gemstone" measures 33.74 millimeters by 54.56 millimeters, the company said.It was uncovered in the initial screening process at Diavik's recovery plant, the company said. "Abrasion markings on the stone's surface attest to the difficult journey it underwent during recovery, and the fact that it remains intact is remarkable."Dominion Diamond Mines added the diamond will not be sold in its rough form, and it's too early to determine its value. The company will select a partner to cut and polish the stone.According to the company, this find exceeds a previous record held by the "Diavik Foxfire," a 187.7-carat diamond discovered at the same mine in 2015 by mining company Rio Tinto. (KGTV) -- The U.S. Geological Survey says a pair of earthquakes struck Costa Rica's Pacific Coast Friday evening, including magnitude 6.0 temblor. There were no immediate reports of damage.The first quake was reported at 11:22 p.m. and was centered in the port town of Golfito on the southern Pacific Coast, according to USGS.The jolt was followed by a smaller but strong magnitude 4.9 quake centered in San Vito, about 40 miles east of Golfito.  That quake struck about 27 minutes after the quake in Golfito.Stay with 10News for updates to this story.  606
