First they dealt with a blizzard, and now, the floodwaters. Many of the Midwest’s farmers and ranchers are dealing with the devastating aftermath of the storms as farmer bankruptcies were already up. About 90 percent of Nebraska’s land is used for agriculture in some capacity, making the damage from floodwaters significant.“The disaster Nebraska has been impacted by for the last week is something we have not seen before in our history,” says Steve Wellman, director of Nebraska Department of Agriculture.Wellman says three-quarters of the state’s counties have declared emergencies. The disaster hits at a time when, according to the American Farm Bureau, Midwest farmer bankruptcies were already up almost 20 percent from the previous year. Some farmers who are facing such serious crop or livestock loss may have to throw in the towel on their livelihoods.“It’s a possibility that some producers will not rebound from this, but that’s [going to] be up to the individuals and what their situation is,” Wellman says.Nebraska resident Alex Stepanek didn’t want to sit idly by and watch that happen. Stepanek posted a collage of photos on Facebook last week, and after seeing it go viral, he decided to start a small fundraiser.“I grew up on a farm near St. Paul, Nebraska. Growing up in a small town, you have that feeling of community of wanting to help each other,” Stepanek says. “And I think all of Nebraska is like that in total, especially in times of crisis. And so, I think this was a great time for Nebraska to come together.”Stepanek has now raised almost a quarter of a million dollars. He says he’s working with the state’s farm bureau to make sure at least a third of that goes straight to farmers. The rest of the money raised will go to the towns and communities affected by the floods, says Stepanek. 1831

GREELEY, Colo. – The man who crashed into and killed a Colorado State Trooper during the bomb cyclone storm in March was sentenced to 90 days in jail on Wednesday.John Carpenter, 58, of Centennial, had pleaded guilty in October to a charge of failure to exercise due care when approaching a stationary vehicle resulting in death. An initial second charge of careless driving causing death was dismissed. On March 13, CSP Cpl. Daniel Groves was helping a stranded motorist on Interstate 76, just west of Roggen, during the massive blizzard. The driver of a 2001 Volvo, who was later identified as Carpenter, lost control and struck Groves outside his patrol vehicle. Groves was transported to Platte Valley Medical Center, where he died. Carpenter had moderate injuries from the crash.Carpenter was also sentenced to eight and a half years of probation and ordered to work 850 hours of community service. 914

He may be 102 years old, but John Sekulich has the energy to tell you stories about his time in the Army during World War II until you’re blue in the face.“A lot of things happen during the war, you know?” Sekulich says from his home in a Denver suburb. “A lot of crazy things.”He could tell you about working throughout the nights, in blackout conditions, repairing U.S. communication lines cut by the Germans. He could tell you about the time fellow soldiers ran over a nearby hill to warn him of German troops that had just killed dozens of Americans. “Rain, shine or snow, didn’t matter,” he says. “We were out there, trying to repair them lines.”But the story he remembers better than any other was from his trip home, after the war had ended. His father was critically ill, and the military arranged a special flight so he could get home faster.Except the flight—from Greenland to New York-- came eerily close to crash and landing in the Atlantic.“One engine went out,” Sekulich recalls. “So, we’re flying along and about noon, the second engine went out.”But despite only having two of the four engines on that bomber, they landed safely. It was his final memory of the war, and it’s one that now—almost 75 years later—he’ll get to re-live.Thanks to Colorado-based non-profit 1294
