SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Family members in the South Bay mourning the death of a beloved grandfather and foster parent from coronavirus.Enrique Gonzalez, 68, was doing everything right. He was staying at home. His family was shopping for him. A month ago, he got sick."Runny nose, body aches, fever," said his nephew, Fernando Gonzalez.Fernando says within a week, Gonzalez tested positive for COVID-19."As soon as he had trouble breathing and talking, we took him to the hospital," said Fernando.Doctors put him on a ventilator and into a medically induced coma. Weeks later, after suffering cardiac arrest, his condition deteriorated. A nurse helped his large family talk to him through Facetime calls."Told him jokes, playing music for him ... praying for him. Really tough not to be in the room," said Fernando.A week ago, Gonzalez passed away."Just devastating to everybody," said Fernando.Fernando says the family now grieving the loss of a hard-working man with the biggest of hearts. After Gonzalez retired from decades working in construction, he and his wife decided to become foster parents, fostering over 20 children in the past 4 years."Even when he passed away, still fostering an infant ... All of a sudden, you're reminded that this COVID-19 does not discriminate ... goes after whoever picks it up. If you really value your family and friends, these restrictions are a temporary timeout," said Fernando.Fernando is urging others to follow shutdown orders and wear masks."Be patient. You do have your loved ones, and you're able to create new memories rather than someone losing their life," said Fernando.A Gofundme campaign has been set up the help the family with expenses. 1695

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Hundreds of students at nearly a dozen schools walked out of class Friday in protest of the planned layoffs by the Sweetwater Union High School District. The district says cutting the teachers is the last resort to fixing a million budget deficit. But students across the district say cutting their teachers will not solve the problem. “I felt it was important because a school like Southwest, where it’s predominantly low income, predominantly Mexican we are typically overlooked and not heard,” says Dale McEnany, a senior at Southwest High. “So this protest is the first step in undoing that.”RELATED COVERAGE:Sweetwater Union High School District votes to cut over 200 jobsTeachers to rally in Chula Vista against Sweetwater District's layoff planHundreds of Sweetwater Union HS District students protest teacher layoffsThe Sweetwater Union High School Board has decided to layoff nearly 240 teachers, librarians, and Learning Center staff. Teachers and Students at Southwest High say cutting the Learning Center program will cause students to be enrolled in Independent Studies, which is similar to homeschooling. This program only has a 7 percent graduation rate. About 1,300 students use the district’s dozen learning centers. The state is auditing the district for potential money mismanagement, but the district says the shortfall is because of the decline in student enrollment and revenue.Students say they believe the district should cut the salaries of administrators instead of cutting hundreds of teachers. SUHSD's superintendent took home 7,000 in 2018.During the meeting where board members approved the cuts, Superintendent Dr. Karen Janney said they have looked at ways to save the positions.“Even in the most challenging financial times, layoffs for this governance team have been a last resort,” said Janney.Teachers and staff at risk of being laid off will receive pink slips in early March, though a final decision on the fate of their employment won't come until May. 2023

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Friday, small businesses throughout San Diego came together against a proposed ban of Styrofoam and single-use plastics while proponents are holding their ground, citing environmental impacts. Some San Diego County cities voted to ban the Styrofoam containers at restaurants as part of an effort to clean up the environment. Those in favor of the ban say it will help keep debris out of the ocean. Local restaurants, however, say they’re worried that banning the containers will force them to use more expensive products, an expense that some say would be passed along to customers.RELATED: City votes 3-2 in favor of Styrofoam container?ban  Friday, some of San Diego’s small restaurant owners gathered outside San Diego City Council President Myrtle Cole’s office to drop off more than 50 letters voicing their opposition to the ban.Business owners argue that San Diego already allows residents to recycle foam food containers in curbside blue bins.RELATED: New California law limits single-use plastic straws in restaurantsThose against the measure also say the move would force restaurants to spend as much as 145 percent more on alternative containers.Earlier in 2018, the City of San Diego Rules Committee voted 3-2 in favor of a Styrofoam and single-use plastic reduction ordinance. RELATED: California law makes milk or water default kids' meal drinkMonday, Councilmember Chris Ward plans to meet with proponents of the ban.
