SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A record number of Americans filed for unemployment for the first time last week, leading to increased competition for the jobs that are available.The Labor Department reported Thursday that nearly 2.9 million workers are now seeking weekly payments from the government amid coronavirus-related closures. In San Diego County, the Workforce Partnership reports that it has received notice from 92 companies totaling roughly 12,000 workers — those notices, however, are voluntary, so the actual number could be much higher. Those workers could receive up to 0 per week from the state of California, plus an additional 0 from the federal government's stimulus package. "I'm in an industry that is vulnerable to situations like this in the future, so what do I have to do about it to guarantee that this doesn't happen to me and my family again in the future? That's my question," said Sean O'Hara, who recently lost his job as general manager of the now-closed Splash Cafe at the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla, which is operated by the French Gourmet. "All the restaurants are closed that I can see. Rachel Merfalen, the agency's director of business development, said drug stores, hardware stores, and home health services are also hiring and many of the jobs are flexible and entry level. "A lot of the influx in hiring that's happening right now is in response to this current situation, and so a lot of these positions, while some may continue to be permanent, I think a lot of them are temporary by nature," Merfalen said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego guitarist is bringing smiles and lifting spirits at Sharp Memorial Hospital.Mark Shatz performs for patients and anyone who walks by.“I've been a volunteer for four years and I come three afternoons a week to do this,” said Shatz. “I get a lot of thumbs up, a lot of smiles.”Shatz learned how to play guitar when he was 12 years old. He performed with a few garage bands but stopped for 33 years.“Wouldn’t you know it, somebody handed me a guitar and said ‘would you play happy birthday’,” Shatz remembered.Shatz had the idea to play for patients when he was visiting his wife in the hospital.“My wife was happy, there was a friend visiting my wife that was happy, and the patient in the other bed…I couldn't believe the reaction of the patient in the other bed,” said Shatz. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A man was taken into custody after he was seen damaging the lobby at the San Diego Police Department’s downtown headquarters.At around 5:30 a.m. Friday, an SDPD officer heard noise coming from inside of the building on 1401 Broadway and saw a man trashing the lobby.Other officers responded, and as they surrounded the lobby from the outside and inside, the man used a large stick or bat to smash glass doors.After some glass broke, officers converged and ordered him to drop the object.Officers deployed less-lethal rounds towards the man and struck him. Once he was on the ground, officers arrested him.Police are reviewing surveillance footage to determine where the man came from and how he ended up inside the building. 751

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Rolando resident is taking Halloween decor to new heights this month, with a NASA-themed display outside his home.Greg Jones is known in the neighborhood for his elaborate Halloween displays. Every year, locals expect an out-of-this-world display. This year, he took that reputation literally.Saturday night, dozens of neighbors and volunteers witnessed the inaugural rocket launch outside the home at 4648 Rolando Blvd., which took months to complete.The celebratory launch came complete with Jones in costume as an astronaut, a moon rover, space capsules, and a 30-foot rocket.The massive space display will be up through Halloween, with a "rocket launch" visible each night.In years past, Jones has delivered a heaping dose of Halloween to his street, bringing mammoth displays including a giant Octopus and King Kong to life over his home. 872
