SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The suspect in the shooting death of a man near the 24 Hour Fitness in the Midway area is an undocumented immigrant with a prior immigration violation, according to law enforcement sources.San Diego Police arrived at the rear parking lot of the gym at 3675 Midway Drive February 25 to find Alexander Mazin, 27, suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso. He died at the scene. After the shooting, officers surrounded an apartment at 30th St and Upas in North Park. The standoff ended hours later without an arrest.RELATED: Parents of Midway shooting victim describe son's life, violent murderLaw enforcement sources told 10News the suspect, Ernesto Castellanos Martinez, had a prior “voluntary departure” agreement which meant he had been asked to leave the country after an immigration conviction in 2004. He left, but eventually made it back into the U.S.Mazin’s family said Castellanos had previously been in a relationship with Mazin’s girlfriend of three months. Two weeks before the shooting, Castellanos had attacked the woman while she was working out with Mazin at a gym, Mazin’s parents said.RELATED: Police release pictures of Midway District homicide suspectTheir son’s death has galvanized their support for President Donald Trump’s plan to build a wall across the southern border.“I want President Trump to know about this,” Jeffrey Mazin told 10News. “I want him to be aware there was a true patriot, a wonderful human being that was an exemplary citizen that was lost because of this problem with our border.”But framing their son’s death as an immigration problem worries Dulce Garcia, an immigration attorney and an undocumented immigrant herself. She has protection from deportation through Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). To her, immigration status should be irrelevant in this case.“Someone is going to commit a crime whether they are undocumented here or not,” she argues.Garcia said her reason is that people like herself, who are otherwise law-abiding members of society, are put at higher risk for deportation when they get grouped in with criminal fugitives.“That’s the truly terrifying part for me because I don’t think that’s American. I don’t think we as a nation agree to paint any group based on what one person’s actions did,” said Garcia.Castellanos remains at large. The victim’s family said police believe he may have fled to Mexico.A reward has been issued for his arrest. Anyone with information can report tips anonymously to San Diego Crime Stoppers. 2529

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The Valley Fire has forced many East County residents to evacuate, but one homeowner said he and his family have decided to stay in their home and ride the situation out.Leo Prado told ABC 10News, “Where are we going to go? It’s not like we just have luggage and we can go into a hotel. We have animals here.”Prado said picking up and leaving his home in the Deerhorn Valley area, near Jamul, isn’t an easy task, especially with horses and dogs on his property.Prado and his family are staying put, as their area is only under a voluntary evacuation as of Tuesday afternoon.According to Prado, his property has not had power since the Valley Fire started on Saturday. He said San Diego Gas & Electric keeps pushing back the restoration time, which is affecting his decisions.RELATED COVERAGEINTERACTIVE MAP: Valley Fire erupts in Japatul Valley areaPHOTOS: Valley Fire erupts in East CountySocial media reaction to Valley FireCheck today's weather forecast in your area“They keep kicking the can. They say it’ll be back at noon, 30 minutes before that nothing … or 4 p.m. -- 30 to 40 minutes before 4 p.m., nothing,” Prado said.Prado spends more than 0 a day refilling his propane tanks for the generator his house relies on.However, with Santa Ana winds set to pick up late Tuesday, Prado said he may be forced to change his mind and find somewhere to go.ABC 10News reached out to SDG&E for comment, and officials provided this statement:“We truly appreciate everyone’s patience as our crews continue to work in challenging conditions to restore power safely as soon as possible. The Valley Fire continues to impact SDG&E power lines in the area of the fire. When there is an appropriate level of containment, allowing for safe conditions, SDG&E crews will be allowed to inspect the power lines for damage and will make necessary repairs to ensure their safe operation. We continue to coordinate closely with the CALFIRE Incident commander and have crews staged in the area who will work to restore power once CALFIRE determines it’s safe to enter the area.”The utility urges customers to check for updates on power outages/restorations at https://www.sdge.com/residential/customer-service/outage-center/outage-map.Meanwhile, the Red Cross is working to find hotels for those who show up at designated evacuation centers.Click here for more information on evacuations. 2415

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The young woman severely injured in a parasailing accident in Mexico is walking and surfing a year later.Katie Malone's recovery has been a long road. "I survived something I shouldn't have survived," she said.Malone was in Puerto Vallarta in June, 2018 for her birthday. Her parasailing ride turned into a nightmare, "I saw the boat capsize and people on the beach run to try and grab the rope to bring me down." She said the the almost half hour she was in the air she worked to keep calm, thinking about her dog Leroy, and what she was going to wear that night. Her family says the rope snapped and she fell in a tailspin. Katie said it was everything she could do to keep from passing out, or getting sick. She said the next thing she remembered was opening her eyes on the ground with emergency crews surrounding her."My heart dropped to my feet," Katie's brother Brendan said.He started calling and coordinating the trip to Mexico to be with his little sister. He talked about being the megaphone for the family, getting the word out through his music community in Nashville, back home in California and setting up the Gofundme online that reached the world. She underwent three surgeries in Mexico and two weeks in, the swelling in her brain hadn't gone down. Katie's mom said doctors doubled her steroid dosage to bring the swelling in the pituitary glad down and it caused a severe reaction.Katie's mom, Sidona, said she was sick all night and that was the moment they all feared she wouldn't pull through. Sidona said the doctor pulled her aside the next day and said, "you don't understand, she could die and she needs to go home now," urging them to Lifeflight her to the U.S.The family overcame huge struggles, from paying cash for the surgeries in Mexico, as Katie was in between insurance, to finding a way to fly her home. Sidona said certain airlines wouldn't fly that far south in Mexican airspace, and medical airlines wouldn't take her without insurance. Their network of friends and family gave them solutions. The final piece came at the last minute, a ,000 anonymous donation to fund her flight home. Her fight to get back to normal just beginning.Katie re-learned how to walk, drive, and surf over the past year, all the while a smile on her face."Instead of that terrible accident taking control of her, she's taken control of that," Brendan said.Katie says positivity, her family and her dog, Leroy, kept her going. She said she used to take Leroy, her support dog, to the hospital to help others and was thankful he was there for her recovery. She advises anyone facing a challenge that your mind is more powerful than your body and positivity will get you through."I'm not 100% back, I'm getting there, I'm back to work, not full time just part time," she said she's focused on getting healthy. She works as a masseuse, making others feel better.Among her challenges, she has a hard time sitting for extended periods of time, and has to adjust her gait and stance. She hopes her story will change regulations in Mexico so this never happens to anyone else. 3112

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This weekend women transitioning out of the military will have the opportunity to bring home an entirely new wardrobe. The event is called Operation Dress Code and features thousands of items, including clothing, purses, and accessories.“Sometimes transition can take a lifetime," said volunteer RanDee McLain, with Mental Health Systems.GOOD NEWS: Officers around San Diego take part in 'Cop on a Rooftop' at Dunkin' stores“The transition has been the hardest for me, I don’t think anybody talks about the emotional side when you separate, " said Timika Saldana, who's transitioning from the Coast Guard. "I have a job lined up, we’re going to be great, we're going to be fine, but they don’t talk about you’re losing a sense of yourself, your uniform is going away, you don’t know how to dress.”Women can also get resume help, get professional headshots, and meet with employers.Organizers say it's a reminder that when the uniform goes away, the sisterhood does not.Walk-ins will be allowed but organizers suggest registering in advance.More information: 1088
