According to San Diego Police, the crash happened near Rosecrans Street and Laning Road around 5:17 p.m. Police say the victim, only described as a man in his 60s, was crossing the street in a designated crosswalk when the driver of a car turned left and hit the man. The victim was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. According to police, the driver stayed on scene and is cooperating. 517

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man died following a shooting in downtown San Diego Thursday evening, police said.The shooting was reported just after 9:40 p.m. near the intersection of 5th Avenue and E Street in the Gaslamp Quarter, according to San Diego police.According to police, an altercation broke out between a man and his companion and a third man. Police said during the altercation, the third man produced a handgun and shot one of the men in the upper torso. The suspected shooter and the victim's companion both fled the scene.The victim was rushed to UC San Diego Medical Center for treatment, but he later died from his injuries. Police identified him as a 22-year-old Hispanic male.While the victim's companion was found a short distance away, police are still searching for the gunman. The suspected shooter was described as a Black male with braided hair, between 20-40 years of age, and wearing a bandana or rag over his face. He was last seen wearing dark clothing and running on eastbound E Street.Police are interviewing witnesses and viewing surveillance video footage from area businesses as part of the investigation. 1141

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A Lemon Grove man was charged Wednesday with aiming a laser pointer at a San Diego Police helicopter as a demonstration moved through Hillcrest last weekend.Rudy Alvarez, 24, was charged with aiming a laser pointer at an aircraft hovering over the protest on June 6, according to the Department of Justice.A federal complaint alleges Alvarez shined a laser at the SDPD aircraft at about 8:30 p.m. in the area of the 500 block of University Ave. During that time, a large demonstration was moving through the area, investigators added.Alvarez was located multiple times over the next hour in the crowd, before police identified him on G St. just before 10 p.m. and arrested him without incident.Detectives say they found a high-powered gray metal laser pointer in his front left pant pocket."Aiming a laser pointer at or near an aircraft could cause distraction or blindness to a pilot and the consequences could be devastating," said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. "We support the Constitutional rights of free speech and assembly, but it is our duty to protect the public and law enforcement from danger."Alvarez's bond was set at ,000 and his next hearing was set for June 23. 1205

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new lot meant to give people living in their cars and RVs a safe place to sleep and avoid citation is going largely unused.During Tuesday morning's wee hours, the lot across from SDCCU Stadium looked completely empty. San Diego opened the lot in mid-June, as the third safe parking lot for those who live in their vehicles. The newest one came a month after the council enacted an emergency ordinance that banned people from living in cars and recreational vehicles on public streets from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. The city enacted the restriction after being inundated with safety concerns from residents who said people were camping in their beach front neighborhoods, leaving human waste, and trash. At Mission Bay on Tuesday, many who do live in their vehicles said they would prefer to stay near the coast, despite the threat of citation. "They don't know about it, and maybe it's not that convenient either," said Gary Parsons, who lives inside his Dodge Ram. "Inside I put in some carpet, and some shelving, and I sleep on the floor."Chris Enders, who lives in an RV with his wife and son, said they spend their nights on unchecked private property, such as parking lots near the beach. He said the Mission Valley location is not feasible."When you're getting five miles a gallon in gas, that's .75 just to get there, and then to get back that's another .75 so you just cost me ... for one day," said Enders.The lot requires all vehicles to be out by 7 a.m. daily. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man says his car was stolen while he was picking up a delivery order from a Subway in Clairemont. Luis Riveramerced said he was working for Postmates, a food delivery app, on Tuesday when he stopped at the Subway in Clairemont Town Square.“All I had to do is grab the bag and take off,” he said.So he felt comfortable leaving his car running, expecting to be in and out in a few seconds.“If I know it’s pick-up only, then I'll let my car run. I’ll just grab it,” he said.But while he was inside, he noticed part of the order was missing. As he was waiting for the order to be fixed, surveillance video captured a man peeking into the store, getting in his car and driving away.“I was like wow,” he remembered thinking when he went back outside. “I wasn’t expecting somebody to jump in my car right in front of me and take off like that.”He called the police but by the time they got there, the driver was long gone.“You put a little bit of trust and now I will never do that again,” said Riveramerced.A Navy veteran, he said he’d been working for Postmates for a few weeks.
