Price gouging continues to be a problem for Amazon shoppers, according to the U.S Public Interest Research Group (PIRG).A consumer watchdog says the price spikes are not based on normal supply and demand.“People are really struggling right now, and the last thing that they need to worry about is going to the store or going online and finding the products that they really need to keep themselves safe at ridiculous prices,” said Grace Brombach, a consumer watchdog associate with U.S. PIRG.U.S. PIRG found a wide range of products can cost two to 14 times more. For example, disinfecting wipes cost nearly on amazon, compared to about at other stores. They suggest making sure you know the average price and shopping around. As part of the HEROES Act, Congress passed price gouging legislation. Some states have bills to further define emergency products to fight price spikes. Still, U.S. PIRG expects this problem to continue.“We see situations like this come up in hurricanes and tornadoes, when people need to buy space heaters and electric lamps,” said Brombach. “And so, this will continue to be a problem going into the future if we don't address this issue now.”Early on in the pandemic, Amazon removed thousands of listings and third party sellers from its website for suspected price gouging. In August, Amazon said it was working to maintain its “fair pricing policy” while taking reasonable increases into account. 1439

Ray Szmanda, known to generations of Americans as the man who brought Menards commercials to life, has died at age 91.Szmanda passed away at his home in Antigo on Sunday, May 6, according to an obituary posted to Bradley Funeral Home & Crematory's website.Szmanda worked in T.V. and radio in the 1950s and operated a broadcast school in Waukesha, Wisconsin until the late 1970s, when he joined Menards as a pitchman. After a successful run, Szmanda retired as the spokesman in 1998.Menards released a statement about the loss of their beloved spokesman:"Ray Szmanda remained a steady fixture in our advertising for nearly a quarter century  until his retirement in 1998.  Still to this day, Ray’s friendly, enthusiastic and fun loving personality have made a lasting impression on our customers and all of us at Menards. We are saddened by his passing and our thoughts and prayers are with Ray’s family, friends and the millions of people who knew him as ‘The Menards Guy.'"His countless commercial appearances over the decades, as well as his distinctive voice, endeared Szmanda to many across the years."I'm having a ball; I love what I do, and I think as long as I feel that way, that message gets across on television," Szmanda once said, according to his official biography on the Menards website.Szmanda graduated from Milwaukee's Bay View High School in 1944. In 1970 he founded the Transamerica School of Broadcasting in Wausau, helping local talent to achieve their dreams, and preparing them for the airwaves. Szmanda also performed as a drummer and vocalist in Wisconsin clubs.Additionally, Szmanda served his country in the Navy in WWII. 1707

Republican Attorney General Josh Hawley will face Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill in one of the GOP's best pick-up opportunities in November.Trump won the state by 19 percentage points in 2016.Polls have closed in Ohio's 12th Congressional District, Missouri, Michigan and Kansas. The Ohio race -- the last special congressional election before November -- is one of two taking place on Tuesday into which President Donald Trump has injected himself, turning both into new tests of Trump's tactics and sway with Republican voters.Republicans are scrambling to avoid an embarrassing defeat in a seat that the party has held for decades. Trump has backed Republican Troy Balderson, who is facing Democrat Danny O'Connor in the last special congressional election before November's midterm elections. A win for Democrats here on Tuesday would signal further danger for Republicans in the fall. The party previously lost a similar race in Pennsylvania and saw one in Arizona get too close for comfort. In the Republican primary for Kansas governor, Trump on Monday endorsed Kris Kobach, the Kansas secretary of state known for his crusade for restrictive voting laws, over incumbent Gov. Jeff Colyer. In doing so, he ignored the pleas of the Republican Governors Association to stay out of the race. Kobach is widely seen as uniquely vulnerable in a general election due to his controversial national profile. The two races will garner the most national attention on a day when four states hold primary elections: Kansas, Michigan, Missouri and Washington.Tuesday's elections carry high stakes for Democrats, too -- with races in Kansas, Michigan and Missouri, where the progressive left hopes to defeat more moderate candidates.  1736

REDDING, Calif. (AP) — A couple whose flattened trailer tire accidentally started a massive fire in Northern California has received more than 100 cards and letters with supportive messages telling them not to feel guilty. The outpouring of support for an 81-year-old man and his wife started after Rachel Pilli made a Facebook post offering to forward compassionate messages to the couple, the Record Searchlight in Redding, California, reported Wednesday.Pilli doesn't know the couple, but said a firefighter who knows them told her the woman blames herself and cries day and night. She decided to send them a card with a supportive message and then posted about the couple on social media.RELATED: Cal Fire firefighters feed fish after family forced to evacuate during Carr Fire"I couldn't imagine the grief," she said. "If I were the one responsible for the accident I couldn't imagine the shame and the torture I'd feel."The blaze that has destroyed nearly 1,100 homes and killed eight people started on July 23 with a spark from a vehicle driving on a flat tire, fire officials said. It was 67 percent contained as of Wednesday.Pilli said she has received more than 100 cards and letters and they keep coming. People have also sent bouquets of flowers and gifts for the couple.RELATED: Exhausted San Diego County firefighters return from burn zonePilli, a doctor and mother of three, and a friend are reading the letters before they send them to the couple to make sure all are encouraging. Thus far, they have been. She said she hopes the couple "feel the love and forgive themselves.""I think the fire has caused us to look into each other's eyes and discover the human kindness in us," Pilli said. "People have been so generous. It's a beautiful story of hope and community." 1795

President Donald Trump suggested during an interview on Wednesday that he will accept the presidential nomination of the Republican party in a live address from the White House later this month.During an interview on Fox News, Trump told anchors that his administration is still weighing its options, but that he's currently leaning toward an option that would have him deliver the speech "live from the White House lawn," calling it the "easiest and least expensive option."Trump also suggested Wednesday that the press would be allowed to attend parts of the convention that will be taking place in Charlotte. Last week, reports emerged that indicated that the administration was considering barring the press from the nomination vote. The Republican National Convention, currently slated to take place between Aug. 24 and Aug. 27, has been completely upended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The convention was originally slated to take place in Charlotte, North Carolina. However, Trump announced earlier this year that he would move portions of the convention to Jacksonville, Florida because he felt North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, a Democrat, was too slow to lift COVID-19 related lockdown restrictions. After cases began spiking at record levels in July, Trump mostly canceled the Jacksonville portion of the event."I looked at my team and I said the timing for this event is not right. It's just not right with what's been happening," Trump said on July 23. 1468
