SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- San Diego Comic-Con announced its “Comic-Con@Home” event will take place on the originally scheduled dates, July 22-26, and the event will be entirely free. After canceling its in-person events at the San Diego Convention Center in April due to “circumstances involving the COVID-19 pandemic and California’s restrictions against large gatherings,” Comic-Con had teased about home events for weeks, finally revealing this week some sense of what that will entail."For the first time in our 50-year history, we are happy to welcome virtually anyone from around the globe," said SDCC spokesperson David Glanzer. "Though stay-at-home conditions makes this a very difficult time, we see this as an opportunity to spread some joy and strengthen our sense of community."RELATED: San Diego Comic-Con 2020 canceled due to pandemicAn online exhibit hall will still sell merchandise, and multiple panels and presentations about comics and popular culture will be available for attendees. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County Vector Control officials reminded residents today to protect themselves against wild rodents after three deer mice were found carrying the potentially deadly hantavirus.Vector Control officials collected the mice in Boulevard during a regular monitoring exercise. Hantavirus occurrences in wild rodents are not uncommon in undeveloped areas of the county, but residents can avoid potentially infected rodents by keeping them out of areas like sheds, garages and homes.Vector Control officials also found five hantavirus-carrying mice in Bonsall, 4S Ranch and Potrero in January. There is no cure or vaccine for hantavirus. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, symptoms of infection can include fever, aches in the large muscle groups, dizziness, digestive issues and abdominal pain. Hantavirus infection is generally unlikely, though, because rodents tend to avoid humans and developed spaces.Residents are advised to use ``wet cleaning'' methods like a bleach solution spray or a sponge and a mop if they find rodent droppings or nests.Sweeping or vacuuming nests and droppings can send the virus into the air, raising the chance of infection. Vector Control officials also advise residents to double-bag and seal rodent debris before throwing it away.Residents can avoid hantavirus exposure by sealing holes that are larger than a dime in homes and adjacent spaces and quickly eliminating rodent debris and infestations. Residents can call the county's Department ofEnvironmental Health at (858) 694-2888 for more information about avoiding hantavirus infection. 1630
SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- The pink, blue and white colors of the Transgender Flag will fly over the County Administration Center and the San Diego Convention Center Sails Pavilion at sundown Friday in honor of Transgender Day of Remembrance. The Human Rights Campaign reports that so far in 2020 "at least 36 Transgender or gender non-conforming people have been killed by violent means, the majority of whom were Black and Latinx transgender women.""The lives of our Transgendered community members are too often violently taken just because of who they are," said County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher. "We cannot stay silent as the deaths of these humans continue to grow year by year. Lighting up these structures won't solve the challenges the Transgender community faces, but it is a step toward raising greater awareness and support for our Transgender neighbors."Fletcher, in partnership with the County of San Diego's LGBTQ&A Employee Resource Group and the African American Association of County Employees, championed securing the lighting of the iconic San Diego structures."To honor these victims and countless others, we stand in solidarity by lighting the CAC to remember each life lost," said Ben Parmentier, President of the County LGBTQ&A Employee Resource Group."The visibility this lighting provides is a small step to bring awareness to a grim reality for one of the most vulnerable populations in our society. Transgender people also face disproportionate health disparities, harassment, and discrimination. It is incumbent upon all of us with privilege to use our power to do more," Parmentier said.San Diego Convention Center leadership supported this awareness initiative when contacted by the Fletcher's office and county employees."In support of Transgender Day of Remembrance, we will light our iconic Sails Pavilion to honor those who we've lost to anti-Trans violence," said Rip Rippetoe, president and CEO of the San Diego Convention Center. "As an inclusivity-driven convention center, we hope that our action will raise awareness of issues that affect our community." 2103
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Rail service along the Los Angeles-San Diego-San Luis Obispo rail corridor will again be suspended Saturday through 5 a.m. Monday from Oceanside to San Diego for track and signal improvements, according to the San Diego Association of Governments. The scheduled rail work in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Carlsbad and San Diego is the second of two weekend-long closures for track and signal improvements along the LOSSAN corridor. Rail service was also suspended from Oct. 13 to Oct. 15. Rail service for the four railroads affected by the closures -- the North County Transit District, Metrolink, Amtrak and freight line BNSF -- is expected to resume Monday for morning commute hours, albeit with possible delays.Track crews in Cardiff-by-the-Sea will replace rail ties as part of a double-tracking project to add a second rail track between Cardiff-by-the-Sea to the San Elijo Lagoon. Work crews connected the second line to the existing track last month. Workers will also update the rail signals at the Chesterfield Drive grade crossing.MAP: Traffic conditions around San Diego County Crews in Carlsbad plan to prepare the NCTD Coaster Poinsettia Station for a new western alignment of the existing track as well as move existing rail signals at the station to more optimal locations. The .7 million Poinsettia Station Improvements Project "will lengthen and elevate passenger platforms, install a fence between the tracks within the station, relocate a section of the existing tracks, and replace the existing at-grade rail crossings with an undercrossing featuring stairways and ADA compliance ramps on both sides of the tracks," according to SANDAG, which expects the project to be completed in 2020.Crews in San Diego will work on improvements to the San Diego River Bridge and structures along the Elvira to Morena Double Track Project. In addition, NCTD crews and San Diego's Metropolitan Transit System will make improvements to track crossings at the Old Town Transit Center. The rail work is part of SANDAG's Build NCC (North Coast Corridor) program, a 40-year, 0 million effort to repair and expand vehicle and rail transportation infrastructure throughout San Diego County. SANDAG officials and work crews expect to finish this weekend's projects between 2019 and 2020. 2305
