An engine on a Southwest Airlines plane caught fire Monday morning during a flight, forcing the aircraft to return safely to the Salt Lake City airport shortly after takeoff, CNN affiliate KUTV reported.The flight's pilots, who were en route to Los Angeles, conducted an emergency landing, said Nancy Volmer, a Salt Lake City International Airport spokeswoman, the station reported.Passenger Crystal Bangerter was taking her first flight ever when she saw "huge flames just coming right out of the engine." 520
As COVID-19 cases surge across the country, an increasing number of couples are suddenly revamping their living wills to include specific language about what to do if someone in their family catches the novel coronavirus and may not be able to make medical decisions for themselves.“I think like a lot of people it certainly caused us to take a step back and say, ‘wow, these types of black swan events happen,’” said Adam Neale, who recently updated his living will.Neale and his wife, Dorean, say the grim reality of COVID-19 pushed them to finish estate planning they had been putting off for years. But the pandemic hasn't only led to a spike in families planning out their estates, it's also changed the way couples are looking at end-of-life care.“What we’ve seen is this heightened sense of awareness of people’s mortality, which has created a heightened sense of urgency in the market, explained Denise McCarthy, an estate attorney in the Boston area.“I don’t think people have thought about ventilators the way they’re thinking about them now.”McCarthy is now recommending couples write in COVID-19 specific language to their wills, like what to do if one spouse ends up on a ventilator. She also says it's important to appoint a healthcare proxy, clearly putting a spouse or family member in charge of your medical care. It’s something that has become more important now than ever as many hospitals are barring visitors because of COVID-19.“It’s one less source of stress in a very tough time,” she said.Nationwide, only about 30 percent of couples have any kind of living will.That now includes Dorean and Adam Neale, who fully admit a pandemic pushed them to plan for the inevitable.“For me, the peace of mind was checking the box on something you were supposed to do and something that you should do,” said Dorean Neale. 1841

As businesses continue to gradually reopen, visiting some may come with more risk of coronavirus exposure than others.Dr. Daliah Wachs broke down the COVID-19 exposure risk of various establishments.Medium risk for COVID-19 exposure are places like hair and nail salons, according to Dr. Wachs.“You’re right there up in their face, waxing their eyebrows, you can’t do that 6 feet social distancing,” said Dr. Wachs.According to new COVID-19 guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people should wait in their car until their hair or nail appointment, and to pay by phone.Medium risk of exposure locations also includes sit-down restaurants, grocery stores and the doctor’s office, according to Dr. Wachs.Dr. Wachs says a doctor’s office can pose a danger due to a higher concentration of sick people being in one place.Inching closer to the highest risk locations are spots like bars, casinos and gyms.“You’re exhaling a lot, so gyms need that extra social distancing, much more than six feet,” said Dr. Daliah.The CDC advises those in gyms to wipe down equipment with disinfecting wipes, and to wear a mask if the workout is low intensity.When it comes to high risk of exposure, Dr. Wachs says parents should be mindful of day care facilities.Another high-risk spot is the Department of Motor Vehicles, according to Dr. Wachs.“You start to come up on the person ahead of you, you almost mentally try to move yourself closer. Apple iPhone fans love the edge-to-edge glass of the new X models. But some phone testers claim the new iPhone XS and larger XS Max are easier to break if they are dropped. A new test from the electronics insurance company SquareTrade is raising questions about that glass and the durability of the new phones.In SquareTrade's drop from 6 feet, (which the insurance company claims simulate the height it would fall from if it slipped while you were talking) the XS screen shattered, resulting in loose and separated glass.A tumble test resulted in hairline cracks and scratches.SquareTrade calls the iPhone XS "high risk" for breakage, much higher than the older iPhone 7's and 8's, which did not have edge-to-edge glass.Others question SquareTrade resultsHowever, other reviewers say these tests may not be that realistic for most people.Apple says the new XS has "the most durable glass ever built into a smartphone."Other testers say unless you are in the NBA, most people don't drop their phones from a 6 foot height. They tend to drop them 3 feet, from pocket or purse level, such as when you are rummaging for keys. The tech review site CNET conducted its own tests, and says the phones sustained no damage from a 3-foot level onto a sidewalk.Panicking over this may be a case of "doesn't that stink."CNET says the new phones should be fine if they're inside a case and dropped from your pocket or tabletop. An Arizona man was awarded a 5,000 verdict after a jury decided a dentist at a popular dental chain wrongly pulled all his teeth without consent.DeWayne Smith won his case against Western Dental Services and Dr. Steven Nguyen in January, ending a three-year legal battle.“They treated him like garbage,” said Craigg Voigtmann, one of Smith’s attorneys. “They took out all of his teeth and then abandoned him.”Western Dental disputes the allegations. In a statement, the California-based chain called the jury’s decision surprising and disappointing.On a Saturday in January 2015, Smith scheduled an emergency visit at the Western Dental. He was having severe tooth pain in his right upper wisdom tooth. It was his first visit ever at the dental office.“I really don’t like going to dentists but I was in pain,” Smith said.At the appointment, Western employees and Nguyen told him Smith had serious dental issues and that he would eventually need to replace all his teeth with implants or dentures.Smith understood, and under pressure from Western Dental sales staff agreed to a long-term treatment plan. However, Smith said he “made it very clear” that he only wanted to have one tooth pulled that day to relieve the pain.During the procedure, Western Dental staff numbed the area, sedated Smith with nitrous oxide, and then packed his mouth full of gauze, according to court testimony.Smith left not knowing they had extracted all his teeth.“I go to pulling this gauze out and then I realize there’s nothing there on the bottom, and there’s nothing there on the top,” he said. “I just fell to the floor. I didn’t believe what I was seeing.”Employees testified that Nguyen left immediately after the procedure and that no one appeared to tell Smith what they did.After the procedure, Western Dental also sent Smith a ,000 bill, he said.“(It’s) like running over a dog in the middle of the road and driving off,” said Smith’s fiancé, Sharon.Nguyen testified that he had a direct conversation with Smith, who told him he wanted to have all of his teeth extracted that day. Western Dental also produced consent forms with Smith’s signature.But Smith’s attorneys claimed those forms were manufactured after the procedure. And one Western employee testified against the company in hours of damning testimony.Bianca Esquer was a patient care coordinator at Western Dental from 2013 to 2015. She worked directly with Smith during his appointment.In a deposition and at trial, Esquer said that Smith made it clear he did not want a full extraction that day. She also discussed how employees and dentists are paid bonuses and commissions based on how much treatment patients get.Esquer also testified it’s hard to believe anyone would agree to have all their teeth pulled on their first visit and without detailed planning.“You don’t send someone home with a full extraction without teeth,” she said.Smith was not provided dentures from Western Dental until months after his procedure, he said.Scripps station KNXV in Phoenix reached out to Nguyen for comment through his attorney, Jeff Tonner.
