SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 14-year-old girl is the first child to die from influenza this season in San Diego.The girl, who died on Feb. 12, had an underlying health condition, according to the County Health and Human Services Agency. She had contracted influenza A, also known as H1N1, the county says, and had not received this season's flu vaccine.“Pediatric influenza deaths are very unfortunate. Our condolences go out to the family,” said Wilma Wooten, County public health officer. “It is extremely important that people get vaccinated because influenza can be deadly.”The teen is one of five flu deaths reported last week, bringing the county's death toll this season to 35 people. The other deaths last week were four men —ages 82, 73, 62 and 56 — and all had underlying medical conditions. Only the 82-year-old and the 56-year-old had been vaccinated, the county says.At this time last season, there had been 268 deaths.“Influenza continues to be widespread. If you have not gotten a flu shot, do it now,” Wooten added.Last week, 539 lab-confirmed cases of influenza were reported, compares to 476 at the same time last season. The majority of cases have been of the H1N1 virus, the county says, which typically affects younger and middle-aged adults because they have not been exposed as much as older adults. 1322

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A driver heading the wrong-way on Interstate 805 died following a fiery crash with another vehicle Saturday.A Mitsubishi Lancer traveling the wrong-way on southbound I-805 near the I-8 connector collided with a Toyota SUV just before 3 a.m., according to California Highway Patrol. The collision sparked a fire, engulfing both vehicles, CHP said.Both drivers were transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to California Highway Patrol. The wrong-way driver later died. Another vehicle received minor damages in the wreck. That driver received minor injuries.CHP was still investigating where the wrong-way driver entered the freeway. It's not clear if alcohol or drugs was a factor in the crash.A portion of I-805 was closed as crews cleared the scene, but was reopened before 7 a.m. Saturday. 855

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --  It was a normal Thursday night for Rob Perelman. His Uber app was on and he was picking up passengers in San Diego. Then suddenly, things changed and his passengers got violent. You may have seen the video by now - a car crashing in Banker's Hill after the passengers began violently beating the driver.RELATED: Uber driver attacked by drunk passengersFriday, Perelman spoke for the first time about his early-morning attack. He told 10News what happened Friday morning isn't an Uber problem - they were just bad apples. "I've done 4,999 rides with good people," Perelman said. "And one with a bad person."Perelman gave that bad ride sometime after 1:00 a.m. Friday. He picked up the passengers in Banker's Hill and almost immediately realized they were drunk. "My gut feeling said to drive away," he said. "But I'm here to give people rides home, and I said you know what, 'we've all been the drunk guy just trying to get home from the bar, let me give these guys a ride home.'"MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodHe only made it two blocks. "The guy in the back seat starts puking out the window...and if he can't make it two blocks, he's definitely not going to make it 10 minutes," Perelman said. So he pulled over and asked the two to get out of his car. He told 10News that he even tried opening the door for one of them."Still nothing happening, so I say a third time, 'get out of the vehicle or I'm calling 911,'" Perelman said. That's when things got dangerous, and the passenger next to him attacked with a fury of punches."And he's not stopping, he's just beyond the point now," Perelman said. "Probably doesn't know what he's doing, just starts throwing punches at my head, I can't get him to stop. I've got my glasses on, he knocks my glasses off."Perelman says he was left with two options. Take the beating or jump out of the car. He took option two, jumping out of the car while it was still in drive and running to a nearby house to call the police.After the car crashed, the passengers seemed to have a moment of clarity and took off. Perelman says he left behind a shoe, a cell phone and ,000 dollars in damages to his car.Even though he had a bad experience, Perelman says he just wants to get back on the road. "I'm just happy that I was able to get out safely and I've got a few bruises on my head, but I was able to walk away, so I'm lucky that it didn't escalate," Perelman said. "I don't know if he has a gun or knife, I just said let me get out of the car I don't care about the vehicle right now."Since Uber knows who the men are, the plan now is to find them and press charges.10News reached out to Uber about the attack. SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- Two men were wounded when another man opened fire from the passenger's seat of a vehicle on a street in the Encanto neighborhood, police said Tuesday.It happened around 10:10 p.m. Monday on Klauber Avenue near Attix Street, west of 69th Street, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A 25-year-old man and a 28-year-old man were standing outside their home when a woman drove up in a vehicle, described as a black or white BMW, with a man in the front passenger's seat, Buttle said.The man in the passenger's seat, believed to be in his late 20s, fired at least seven shots and the younger man was struck four times in the stomach while the older man was struck in a buttock and a leg, the officer said.Family members started to transport the victims to a hospital, but they were stopped by police, then paramedics took the victims to a hospital for treatment of their injuries, which were not believed to be life-threatening, Buttle said.No detailed suspect descriptions were immediately available. 1029

San Diego (KGTV) -- A 41-year-old woman suffered serious injuries Monday night when she was hit by an SUV while crossing the street in Pacific Beach.Police say the collision happened shortly before 10:40 p.m. on Grand Avenue west of Mission Bay Drive.A 24-year-old woman was driving a 2018 Jeep Cherokee eastbound of Grand Avenue while the victim was crossing the street southbound, then stepped off the center median and was struck by the Jeep. Paramedics took the victim to Scripps La Jolla Hospital with major injuries. She is expected to survive.The driver remained at the scene. 591
