Dominica Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit confirmed on his Facebook page on Monday that he was rescued as Hurricane Maria hit his small island nation. Hurricane Maria made landfall just before 10 p.m. ET on the island of Dominica with top winds of 160 MPH. Skerrit's roof was one of many that were ripped off as Maria came on shore. "My roof is gone. I am at the complete mercy of the hurricane. House is flooding," Skerrit said just before being rescued. Hurricane Maria is the second Category 5 hurricane to strike the Caribbean in the last two weeks. Hurricane Maria is following a similar path as Hurricane Irma, which devastated parts of the Caribbean before coming on shore in Florida on Sept. 10.Local radio reports said that parts of Dominica are flooded, and there has been roof failure at a local hospital. During Frontier flight 1397 from Cleveland to Tampa this afternoon, six passengers became ill. The aircraft was met by local emergency medical services upon arrival in Tampa. Those passengers displaying symptoms were evaluated by medical staff before being released. All other passengers were released after a brief holding period. (KGTV) — San Diego Sheriff's bomb/arson detectives were called to investigate a house fire that broke out Wednesday afternoon.Firefighters and deputies were called to the 1600 block of Via Elisa just before 3 p.m. Wednesday after the fire broke out at the home.Strong winds threatened nearby structures, forcing deputies to evacuate the homes, the SDSO said.Based on the initial investigation, Sheriff's bomb/arson detectives were called to the scene.The cause of the fire has not been determined, but the investigation was ongoing late Wednesday. 572
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Saudi Arabia says this year's hajj will not be canceled, but that due to the coronavirus only "very limited numbers" of people will be allowed to perform the major Muslim pilgrimage. The kingdom said Tuesday that only people of various nationalities already residing in the country would be allowed to perform the hajj. The government did not specify how many people would be permitted to take part. The annual pilgrimage, which is set to begin this year at the end of July, traditionally draws around 2 million Muslims from around the world for five intense days of worship and rituals in Mecca. 639
Dramatic moments in a San Bernardino courtroom today as a prosecutor slammed a sledgehammer onto a table. He was simulating what he says is how a Fallbrook family of four was murdered in 2010. Charles Merritt is accused of killing his business partner, Joseph McStay, his wife Summer and their two young sons Giani and Joe Jr. The prosecution says Merritt was being sidelined from the business and owed thousands of dollars to McStay. The defense countered in their closing arguments that the prosecution focused on trying Merritt’s character and not the actual facts of the murder. The defense told jurors the circumstantial case produced no evidence tying their client to the family’s violent deaths. The prosecution told jurors they didn’t have to prove how, where or when the murders took place, only that Merritt committed them. The McStays disappeared from their Fallbrook home in early February 2010. Days after they were last seen, the family’s SUV was found abandoned at a strip mall parking lot in San Ysidro.In 2013, the bodies of the family members were found in the Mojave Desert, near Victorville. Prosecutors said the family died from blunt-force trauma to their heads. Authorities found a sledgehammer, believed to be the murder weapon, in one of the graves.Merritt was arrested in connection with the killings in November 2014 after sufficient evidence linking him to the case, including DNA, was discovered.Authorities alleged Merritt killed the family members inside their home and then buried them in the desert. Merritt also tried to paint over the crime scene, according to authorities.Merritt, 61, has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and is being held without bail.Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty in the case. 1758
