Taipei, April 25 (Xinhua) -- Signing the cross-Strait economic and trade pact, ECFA, will benefit Taiwan, Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou said here Sunday in a television debate.Ma debated with the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen during a two-hour televised debate over the economic cooperation framework agreement (ECFA), a free trade agreement the Taiwan authority intends to sign with the Chinese mainland.Taiwan urgently needs a trade pact with China to usher in a golden decade of economic boom, Ma said, accusing DPP of exaggerating the adverse effects of ECFA and manipulating public fear.Lee Tung-Hao, a professor with the National Chengchi University, said there are different voices over ECFA because of public misunderstanding of the pact, but the debate will help build consensus.The ECFA, a priority in cross-Strait relations, is aimed at institutionalizing economic cooperation between the mainland and Taiwan and facilitating and regularizing economic and trade exchanges.

BEIJING, May 20 (Xinhua) -- As the curtain is about to rise on the upcoming second round of the China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue (S&ED), to be held in Beijing on May 24-25, the world's attention will again focus on the Chinese capital.Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai said Thursday that in order to achieve positive results from the dialogue, China will strengthen communications, enhance mutual trust and deepen cooperation with the United States.Analysts say this round of talks is of special significance because it signals a new consensus reached by the two sides after overcoming certain obstacles in their relationship.MOVING TOWARDS THE SAME DIRECTIONThe history of Sino-U.S. relations is full of twists and turns, so every step forward and every turn for the better is precious.The second S&ED will be another positive turn for both nations after they overcame a number of complicated problems in their relations.After Barack Obama took over the White House last year, Sino-U.S. relations got off to a good start. BEIJING, March 26 (Xinhua) -- China's health authorities stressed Friday a ban of hepatitis B tests for college admission and employment, saying checks, if necessary due to occupational requirements, are subjected to the Health Ministry's approval.A notice of the ministry reiterated that health institutions are not allowed to give hepatitis B virus (HBV) tests in health checks carried out for college admission and job recruitment, a policy introduced in February to prevent discrimination on HBV carriers.If candidates' liver functions must be tested to qualify special job posts, the checks must get approval from the Health Ministry, the notice said.The notice also said health institutions cannot provide HBV tests in regular health checks unless at the request of testers, in which case reports must be sealed and handed directly to testers or someone they entrust.Clinical tests must seek consent from patients and their privacy should be respected, according to the notice.Previously, an HBV test was a must on the health check list for college admission and job recruitment, and carriers were usually denied the opportunities, which caused complaints of discrimination and calls for a ban of such tests.The World Health Organization says HBV is transmitted from mother to child, through unsafe injections practices, blood transfusions or sexual contacts, and it cannot be transmitted through casual contact.
