(KGTV) -- If you grew up in San Diego, you've probably heard of, visited or passed by the Living Coast Discovery Center off Interstate 5 in the South Bay."We focus on local wildlife so we have species have like Tido, the barn owl here, reptiles, sea turtles and aquatic species," said Rachel Harper, LCDC's marketing and communications manager.For over three decades, the facility educated communities, students and families about wildlife and protecting the planet."The animals are the hook but we’re talking about sustainability and zero waste. Those things and how we can make not just our planet, but our backyard in San Diego more sustainable for everyone and that includes compost workshops and those sort of things," Harper said.Since the pandemic forced them to close in March, their animals and their mission faced uncertainty. They couldn't open because half of their facility is indoors."This is certainly a worrisome time for a lot of organizations that rely on general admissions and school revenue," said Harper.They've hosted animal encounters and workshops since March but it wasn't enough."We act as a home for them so it's important we remain open for their sake but also so we can continue to fulfill our mission of connecting San Diegans with our local wildlife," Harper said.The center needed to raise 0,000 to fund projects like their breed and re-release program, and continue research on threatened species.They asked the public they've served to help with donations or register for online programming. 1537

(KGTV and AP) -- A Coronado parachutist jumped out of a plane over Normandy Wednesday, just as soldiers did 75 years ago, according to the Associated Press. The parachutists were honoring the airborne soldiers who jumped into gunfire ahead of the June 6 1944 seaborne invasion. 97-year-old D-Day veteran Tom Rice was among the paratroopers who leapt out of planes that day. According to the Associated Press, Rice jumped in tandem Wednesday into roughly the same area he landed on D-Day. “It went perfect, perfect jump,” Rice said following the jump. “I feel great. I’d go up and do it again.”On D-Day, Rice jumped with the 101st Airborne Division, landing safely despite catching himself on the exit and a bullet hitting his parachute. Rice flew down Wednesday with the stars and stripes flag beneath him, landing with loud applause. Other parachutists jumped with World War II souvenirs, some of which were worn by their grandfathers into battle. Rice said following the jump that he feels he represents a whole generation. (KGTV) - An earthquake struck northern Mexico’s Baja California peninsula Monday, causing tremors felt in San Diego County.The 4.8 quake was located near Alberto Oviedo Mota at 12:18 p.m.The initial quake was followed by a 3.3 aftershock in the same area seven minutes later.Alberto Oviedo Mota is roughly 160 miles from San Diego. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the shaking in San Diego County was in the II-III or IV categories, meaning weak to light. The strongest shaking reported in the U.S. was in El Centro, which was considered moderate.There are no immediate reports of damage or injuries. 626

(CNN) -- Ikea is shutting down its only furniture factory in the United States.The Swedish company will end production this December at its plant in Danville, Virginia. Operations will move to Europe, where the company says it can cut costs."We made every effort to improve and maintain the competitiveness of this plant, but unfortunately the right cost conditions are not in place to continue production in Danville," site manager Bert Eades said in a statement.The Danville facility, which opened in 2008, employs 300 workers. Wooden products including shelves and storage units are made at the plant.In justifying its decision, Ikea pointed to raw material prices, which it said are higher in the United States than Europe. Ikea operates plants in European countries including Poland, Russia and Sweden.Senator Tim Kaine, a Democrat from Virginia, tweeted in 2018 that workers at the Danville plant were worried about how tariffs would affect costs. Kaine said the plant imports many raw materials.Since Kaine visited the plant, the Trump administration imposed tariffs on imports of particle board, a common Ikea material, from China.Ikea said Tuesday the decision to close the plant was not related to tariffs. It said that particle board used at the Danville plant is purchased from US suppliers.Ikea owns manufacturing facilities in nine countries, employing roughly 20,000 people.A recent shift in Ikea's retail strategy to adapt to the growth of online shopping has led to job cuts in other parts of the business.The company has been investing in online pickup services and digital fulfillment centers, and in 2017 bought TaskRabbit, an online marketplace for finding gig workers. It's also been opening smaller stores in big cities to attract younger shoppers.Ingka Group, the Swedish holding company that owns and operates most of Ikea's stores, said last year that it would lay off about 7,500 employees, or 5% of its global workforce, and build 30 smaller stores in major cities around the world in the next few years.The company said it could ultimately create 11,500 jobs as a result of this shift. 2122

(KGTV) - A former Coronado Fire Department employee will spend the next decade in prison for child molestation. Mark Price, who was a firefighter for 30 years, was sentenced Thursday for sexually abusing a young family member on vacation in Hawaii last year. The girl and her mother gave their victim impact statements to the judge in Hawaii over the phone. The young victim said she feels very uncomfortable when she’s alone in a room with a man. Her mother said she’s worried how this will affect her daughter as she becomes a teenager, and that this has ruined her daughter’s life. “Mark was her role model, the man figure in her life that she trusted the most and that was all shattered and she has trust issues even with me,” said Dannika Zarghami, who knows the victim. Price faces additional charges related to the same victim in San Diego. He will be in a downtown courtroom Tuesday. 899
