BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) — The California Highway Patrol says an officer conducting a routine traffic stop found ,000 of stolen Disney merchandise.The CHP says a Nissan Sentra was pulled over Friday in Kern County after the driver failed to stop when approaching a school bus.The officer learned the driver's license was suspended and then discovered hundreds of pins and other merchandise allegedly stolen from Disneyland.Officials didn't immediately identify the motorist.Authorities say the CHP has contacted Disneyland security and made arrangements to return the property. 588

ASHEVILLE, North Carolina (WLOS) —Police have identified their suspect after a standoff put multiple establishments near the well-known Biltmore Estate on lockdown Wednesday morning.Asheville Police say they entered a foot pursuit with Gary Adrian Church, 42, of Ronda, N.C., at approximately 9:34 a.m. local time. Church had open warrants for several robberies in Asheville, as well as Burke and Iredell Counties.The suspect fled on foot and into the woods behind the DoubleTree Hotel and TGIFriday’s in Biltmore Village.As a safety precaution, several businesses in the area, including MAHEC, DoubleTree Hotel, TGIFriday’s and the Hampton Inn were all placed on lockdown.The Asheville Police Department’s Crisis Negotiation Team responded to the area and stayed in constant communication with Church. After approximately 3 hours, the suspect was taken into custody with no further incident.No injuries were sustained by officers or the suspect.Police say rumors of an active shooter that had been circulating on social media were incorrect. 1055

At a press briefing in Washington on Friday, Vice President Mike Pence said the White House coronavirus task force had identified 16 states — about one-third of all states in the nation — where COVID-19 cases are on the rise.According to Pence, in the other 34 states, there is a "measure of "stability" among cases — saying that while these states may experience new cases, "positivity rates are stable."Pence said that most of the states with rising cases are in the "Sun Belt." He said that he and other health officials would travel to Arizona, Florida and Texas — three states experiencing severe spikes in cases — next week, to meet with governors.The task force reported that a majority of new cases have been reported in people younger than 34 — a development that Pence called "encouraging" in some ways because young people are more likely to recover from the virus.According to Pence, there have been 2.5 million confirmed cases of the virus in the U.S. According to Johns Hopkins, there are about 4,425,000 confirmed cases of the virus.During Friday's briefing, Dr. Anthony Fauci — America's top expert on infectious diseases — said that some areas of the country as facing a "serious problem" amid rising numbers. ATLANTA — Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp is suing Atlanta to block the city from enforcing its mandate to wear a mask in public and other rules related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Kemp and Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr, in a state court suit filed late Thursday, argued that Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms has overstepped her authority and must obey Kemp’s executive orders under state law. The suit comes a day after Kemp clarified his executive orders to expressly block Atlanta and at least 14 other local governments from requiring people to wear face coverings. Kemp’s order was met with defiance Thursday by Bottoms and other mayors, who said they would continue enforcing their mandates and were prepared to go to court.Kemp has maintained a policy of voluntary use of masks throughout the state. ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia’s governor, who has opposed local mask mandates and even sued over one in Atlanta, has signed a new executive order that allows local governments to enact mask requirements to help fight the coronavirus pandemic.As with previous orders, the one issued by Gov. Brian Kemp on Saturday says residents and visitors of the state are “strongly encouraged” to wear face coverings when they are outside of their homes, except when eating, drinking or exercising outside.But unlike previous orders, this one allows local governments in counties that have reached a “threshold requirement” to require the wearing of masks on government-owned property.A county meets that threshold if it has had 100 or more confirmed cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 people over the past two weeks. Very few of the state’s counties are below that threshold.The order says mask mandates can’t lead to fines, fees or penalties against private businesses or organizations. For individuals, the order says penalties cannot include a fine more than or prison time.The order also extends shelter-in-place requirements for people who are considered to be at a higher risk of severe illness from the coronavirus.It also bans gatherings larger than 50 people if individuals are closer than 6 feet apart. 1299
