Residents and businesses near a dam in North Carolina appeared to have dodged potential disaster Wednesday after an emergency at the location was called off.Earlier, heavy rains and a landslide in the western North Carolina mountains "compromised the integrity" of Lake Tahoma dam and triggered urgent calls for mandatory evacuations.Emergency officials said the dam was "at risk of imminent failure" and the weather service extended a flash flood warning for central McDowell County until 12:30 p.m.The National Weather Service cited reports early Wednesday from McDowell County emergency management officials that "water is spilling around the sides of Lake Tahoma dam. Evacuations ongoing south of the dam."But later, McDowell County emergency officials said Lake Tahoma had been inspected and deemed safe and a mandatory evacuation was halted. "The emergency at Lake Tahoma has been canceled. The evacuation order is no longer in effect. The engineer has performed a safety inspection and determined that the evacuation order is no longer needed," according to a statement on the McDowell County 911/Emergency Management Facebook page. 1147

RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. (KGTV) — The Fairbanks Ranch Country Club is an oasis along an otherwise remote stretch of road that winds away from Del Mar.But for a number of female employees working inside its clubhouse, it was something much darker.A new lawsuit filed by the Federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission alleges that around 2016, former manager Shant Karian sexually harassed a number of the workers, with financial consequences if they didn't play along. For one of the workers, the suit says Karian repeatedly made sexual advances, hitting her buttocks, putting his arm around her waste and choking her, and repeatedly pursuing her sexually. He told another to wear a tighter blouse, and sent one text messages asking to see her backside, the suit says.RELATED: Carmel Mountain Ranch residents raise concerns over golf course closureKarian also allegedly told male customers one worker could give them lap dances. The lawsuit says Karian made the schedule, and those who didn't comply were subject to lower pay rates, reduced hours, and threatened with termination.Karian did not return a call seeking comment.Annie Appel, a spokeswoman for club owner The Bay Club Company, says Fairbanks Ranch terminated Karian for cause after an internal investigation in October 2016 after an internal investigation."The Bay Club Company is aware of the EEOC’s allegations and will respond in a timely manner to the claims made in the complaint," Appel said. "TBCC is committed to a safe, harassment-free work environment for everyone."Anna Park, an attorney for the EEOC, said sexual harassment in the workplace continues to be an issue nationwide."The power differential is really what is the problem in these harassment cases," she said. "This way the burden is on the employer to make sure the employees know where to go."The lawsuit says Fairbanks Ranch didn't take action to help the employees, even deterring them from making complaints. 1960

QUEEN CREEK, Ariz. — Conversations have been forced to change in children's classrooms. Many adults remember simply learning about a basic fire drill or what to do in a lockdown. But today, many teachers are having to teach kids what to do in case of an active shooter. Another safety net that is being used in places around Arizona, including Queen Creek Unified School District, is a donated, repurposed tool from the Queen Creek Fire and Medical Department: fire hoses. "They're cut into a certain segment. They are perfect to go over the hinges of our doors and that just adds this extra layer of security to our classroom," said Newell Barney Middle School science teacher Tammi Brewster. Brewster explained how the recycled and donated fire hoses from the fire department become a deterrent for any "bad guys" trying to get into a classroom and are now a part of their lockdown procedure called ALICE. ALICE stands for alert, lockdown, inform, counter and evacuate. Brewster said that the fire hose is part of a larger conversation with students regarding school shootings. It helps explain the procedure for active shooter or lockdown drills in a way that does not scare them, but empowers them. "It gives them a relief that, 'OK, all of this is going on in the news, in our society and I have choices I can make. I don't have to sit in a corner and be scared,' '' Brewster said. "The schools have their processes and their programs in place for a lockdown," said Queen Creek Fire Chief Vance Gray. "What we wanted to do was just assist by adding another layer of protection for the teachers and the students and the schools." Gray said his two children went to one of the schools where he has donated these fire hoses. While it is a piece of equipment he never hoped he would have to pass out, he knows taking action is the only thing to do. "If you can't change the way things are and make them exactly how you want them to be, then the best thing you can do is prepare," Gray said. He said they will continue donating their fire hoses whenever they go out of service.  2169

RAMONA, Calif. (KGTV) - The San Diego County Sheriff’s sex crimes task force is investigating reports of a Ramona family who offered free train rides to families at their home, despite the presence of a registered sex offender. The Green family’s miniature railroad was years in the making. Recently, the family invited the Ramona community to visit the property. However, the Megan’s Law website reports 45-year-old Christopher Green, who lives at the home with his parents, is a registered sex offender. His convictions include lewd acts with a child under 14, the Megan’s Law site indicates.10News went to the Greens’ home to ask why the family didn’t let the public know about their son’s background. Green’s father would not go on camera but said his son has paid his dues, the incident was in the past, and the family is moving on. He added there would be plenty of supervision at the holiday train rides and said there’s more to his son’s conviction than meets the eye. Green’s father also said his son has a learning disability. The Sheriff’s Department issued a statement which reads in part, “The sexual assault felony enforcement task force was made aware of the event and has opened an investigation. We will be taking measures to keep the community in Ramona safe for this event.” 1298

Retail stores everywhere are feeling the pressure. If they don't get people into their doors, they could be the next Sears, J.C. Penny or Toys “R” Us.  Retail experts say 3,000 stores have closed just this year.  It's a vicious cycle, with more people shopping online, more stores close. And malls take a hit with stores closing."If it's a three-anchor store and two anchors close, then you're probably done," explains real estate expert Greg Maloney.Maloney says don’t be fooled though. He says malls aren't dying, instead, they are reinventing themselves.  "We need to make the shopping experience a lot more exciting," he says.Just like it was in the 80s, the movie theater at malls made a comeback to get people in the doors. There's a mall in Nashville, Tennessee that opened a Madame Tussaud wax museum to attract shoppers. In providence, Rhode Island turned the second level into apartments to really keep people from leaving. With mall reinventing themselves, Maloney says you’ll really notice change at the department stores. "I don't think they will completely go away, but I think they will be downsized,” Maloney says. “They will be smaller and fewer of them.”As for vacant spots in malls: get ready to see more online stores like Bonobos, UNTUCKit and Amazon open up brick and mortar stores, allowing shoppers to have the best of both worlds. 1381
