CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A former longtime employee of the Sweetwater Union High School District pleaded not guilty Tuesday afternoon to felony charges of embezzlement. Danya Williams, 42, is charged with embezzling more than ,000 over 18 months beginning in June of 2017. Williams worked for the district for 17 years in the accounting department and most recently human resources. According to prosecutors, she was in charge of taking money orders to pay for background checks of job applicants. She's accused of altering the money orders; making them payable to herself. Prosecutors say she deposited 800 money orders into her own personal account. "Some that weren't hired can request them back. When some of them were asked for them back, they discovered they were never deposited into an account," said Deputy District Attorney Kimball Denton. Williams resigned from the district when the allegations surfaced. She's out of jail on a ,000 bond. She could face four years in prison if convicted. She has no criminal record. "It's very disappointing and sad when people who we trust within our school communities do brazen things like this that breach that trust and we're going to be holding her accountable for her actions." "She probably ranks in the top ten of the most nervous I've ever had. She's about to have a breakdown today. She's extremely nervous, and again, she's the nicest person you'll ever meet. I understand the other side as well," said defense attorney Kerry Armstrong. Her preliminary exam is scheduled for April 30th. 1563

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- As the Sweetwater Union High School District deals with financial trouble totaling tens of millions of dollars, employees are starting to feel the impact. At least 300 employees with the district opted for early retirement, some of whom retired this December. Peter Bishop has worked for the district for more than 17 years as a math and science teacher. RELATED: Lack of oversight, massive spending and even larger deficits continue to plaque SUHSDBishop says he, along with hundreds of others, was offered early retirement after learning that the district was operating at a deficit. “There’s always a little bit of emotion when you go through a life transition like that. I’m sorry to leave the kids, sorry to leave my colleagues, those are the folks I’m going to miss, but, you know, time to move on.”Bishop expects that there will be an impact to schools throughout the district as experienced teachers move out and younger, less experienced ones move in. The teachers that retired were all long-term teachers. Very experienced. The offer comes as the district figures out how to deal with financial woes. (KGTV) - A Chula Vista jiu-jitsu instructor pleaded not guilty Wednesday on four counts of lewd acts against a child under the age of 14.Deputy District Attorney Julie Lynn told 10News the alleged incident involving Gabriel Gonzalez happened August 18. It did not take place at the Chula Vista Jiu-Jitsu facility on Third Ave. where Gonzalez worked, Lynn said.The judge issued a protective order for Gonzalez to stay away from two females, whose names 10News is withholding due to the sensitive nature of the charges.Gonzalez’ bail was also increased to 0,000. 606

(KGTV) -- Police are asking for the public’s help after they say several suspects stole credit cards and used them to go shopping at Macy’s.Police say a house on the 400 block of Vista Way was burglarized on January 10. (KGTV) - Chula Vista neighbors are dealing with the aftermath of a San Diego Gas and Electric equipment malfunction that triggered a power outage and caused their homes to smoke.Residents on Country Club Circle told 10News about the outage Saturday night. Electricity was restored and everything seemed fine, they said, but they woke up to sparked outlets, smoke and fire Sunday morning.“Every single room sounded like someone came in with gunshots,” said Mona Hernandez. “My girls got up screaming ‘fire’ in one of the rooms and I thought they were on fire. I feared they were actually on fire until I got to see them.”SDG&E said the equipment failure involved a transformer and affected more than 400 homes in the area.One woman said she was concerned about her air conditioning and heating working for her son.“He’s disabled. We need the heater to use. He's going to have open brain surgery next week. You people from SDG&E should have been out here.”She also said her smart television was destroyed by the outage and feels she deserves more than what SDG&E is offering to replace it.“ for a Toshiba smart TV is not very nice.”SDG&E said it has representatives assisting customers with claims.
