SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Some San Diego homeowners are making a little extra money and helping with the housing crisis by converting their home detached garages into so-called "granny flats."10News visited the 95-year-old North Park home of Mike Walsh, who is in the process of remodeling his garage. "It was a huge garage and we had a bunch of space in it, so we thought we'd try to convert it into something a little more useful," Walsh said.Walsh hired contractor Murray Lampert to come up with a design that would keep half the space as a two-car garage, while turning the rest into a 230-square-foot apartment. It includes a bathroom with shower, as well as a kitchenette.Murray Lampert CEO Gregg Cantor said many San Diego County cities are making it much easier to convert homes into granny flats, officially known as "accessory dwelling units" or ADU's. The City of San Diego has eliminated some fees to encourage homeowners, while also eliminating some regulations that used to block ADU creation.A city spokesperson told 10News there has already been a significant uptick in ADU applications in 2019. He estimates about 20% of those are garage conversions."They're not always directly for rental," Cantor said. "But I think the upside of it all is creating more rental space in San Diego County because there's a shortage and housing is very expensive."Cantor warns that is important to follow all building codes and to get the proper permits before starting the project, rather than hire a contractor willing to do the work under the table. "There is a process to do it to code that does cost a little more than just hiring a Chuck in a truck to build it and not get permits, but the payoff is way better," Cantor added. 1734

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Singer Alicia Keys and her husband, rapper and music producer Swizz Beatz, are behind the purchase of a a -million mansion on the cliffs of La Jolla, according to the Wall Street Journal.The paper, citing sources familiar with the deal, say Keys and Beatz, whose real name is Kasseem Dean, bought the 10,600-square-foot home that is said to have inspired Tony Stark's Malibu home in the "Iron Man" film franchise. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — SeaWorld San Diego welcomed several adorable birds to the flock this week, well, "flamboyance."The park welcomed seven Caribbean flamingo chicks to the mix, ranging from 2 to 11 days old, recently.The birds have entered breeding season, SeaWorld says, and cute gray, fluffy newborns will be available to see at Flamingo Cove.RELATED: SeaWorld offers Inside Look as additional experienceFlamingo eggs incubate for about 28 days before hatching, according to the park. Both the male and female take turns sitting on top of the nest to incubate the egg.Once hatched, both parents feed the chick by producing a secretion called, "crop milk."While flamingos are known for the bright pink feathers, they are born with gray or white down feathers. The pink feathers' color occurs from the carotenoid proteins in their diet. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Several women appeared in San Diego County Court to recall the interactions they had with Juan Carlos Cordero, the man they claim raped them. San Diego Police arrested 35-year-old Cordero in March for multiple felony sex crimes beginning in 2015. Police said he would approach intoxicated women at bars or online, take them back to his home, and rape them. One by one, the women came into the courtroom Wednesday, to answer questions at the preliminary hearing. The accusers said admittedly, some of the details of what happened are foggy."I'm not sure," one woman replied. "I honestly don't remember, but I was embarrassed that I didn't remember," said another. "I felt like ... I was drugged," another woman said. One woman said she met Cordero after posting on a singles advertisement on Craigslist. She was hoping for a pleasant interaction but said it turned horrific. She said she did everything Cordero told her to do, fearing for her life."He threatened me with spanks with the belt, a weapon," she said. Another woman said she met Cordero on a dating site when she was 18. She admitted lying to her father about Cordero, saying he was a person she knew. But after drinking a few beers in San Diego County, she said Cordero drove her to his home in Newport Beach. "I don't remember very much until I woke up to him yelling at me that I was being too loud, and that I was like every other girl and that I was going to wake up his neighbors," she recalled.After that interaction, she demanded Cordero drive her back to San Diego. In fear that her parents would scold her, she said she did not tell them what had happened, until a few hours later. On the drive home, she remembered that Cordero punched her face repeatedly."I grabbed the steering wheel and yanked it on the freeway," she said. "He [Cordero] got off at the next exit, and I ran into the Denny's."She then had her father pick her up at the restaurant in San Clemente. The following day, she said she went into a hospital to take a drug and rape kit.Another accuser said last fall, she and Cordero went on what started as a nice first date. But she ended up unconscious and woke up in pain."I noticed welts on the back of my butt, I guess," she said. Tearing up, she said she was too embarrassed to report the incident because the two continued to date. After they broke up, she said she read an article about Cordero and his alleged victims. That is when she decided to go to the police and tell her own story."He choked me until the point where I couldn't breathe," she said. "And I asked him to stop." "And what did he say?" prosecutor Martin Doyle said. "That he could end me right then and no one would know," she replied. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University is warning students that they will need to be re-vaccinated against meningitis after Walgreens gave out shots at non-optimal temperature.According to The Daily Aztec, Walgreens recently discovered that the meningococcus B vaccines, given to 350 students on October 5 and 8, weren’t given at the right temperature.The company says its reaching out to students who received them.
