SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Carlos couple says they were amazed after reaching out to neighbors about gifting some holiday cheer to those in need.Twas the time before Christmas, and the Kvendru home in San Carlos bears similarities to Santa’s workshop."Not a lot of space on the counters. It's like a hoarder home," laughed Renae Kvendru.For Renae Kvendru and her husband David, the journey to this moment began eight holidays ago, when they handed out some 12 Ziploc bags filled with supplies to the homeless. Since then, their efforts have grown slowly every year.This year, they decided to appeal to their neighbors on the Nextdoor app for supplies."The response was overwhelming and extremely heartwarming. I was expecting 20 jackets, and I got hundreds," said Kvendru.Their converted garage is filled with boxes of donations, including other clothing items, gloves, shoes and umbrellas. The couple also plans to hand out COVID-prevention kits."We made COVID bags ... a couple of masks, hand sanitizer, and wipes," said Kvendru.In all, the couple has put together some 300 gift bags and stockings filled with snacks and toiletries, including some special bags for kids that come with a stuffed animal.Renae gets emotional when talking about a gift she received as a child."I grew up poor, though I was never on the streets and always had food. One year, I think it was Toys for Tots ... some big truck came by our house and gave me a big teddy bear. There are pictures of me hugging that teddy bear. Just remembered how happy that teddy bear used to make me as a kid. If you can give someone that moment, that’s pretty awesome," said Kvendru.Starting this weekend, the couple will drive through areas with homeless populations and start passing out their holiday gifts."If you can help make one person’s day a little brighter, you’ve done good ... I hope this can inspire others to do little things to help the homeless or less fortunate. We need to help another," said Kvendru. 1987

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego artist wants to paint murals around the city that she hopes can help bring an end to gun violence."My concept is just something beautiful that people can take a picture in front of and just really enjoy the artwork of it but also take a message away from it," says Hanna Daly.Her concept is a series of artworks that look like colorful doorways. Each will have a message written above them, like 'Thoughts and Prayers Aren't Enough.""I thought it could be, like, a doorway to change," Daly says. "You walk away from it thinking, maybe there's a little something I can do. Like a doorway you step through it and now you're part of the cause."Daly became part of the cause last year, when her brother comitted suicide. He had shot himself in the head."Then a few weeks after that was Las Vegas," she says. "And then another shooting and another. It just kept hitting me, so I finally thought I should do something."Daly is working with with the Brady Campaign and Moms Demand Action on the project. She has the designs, just not the space to paint them."We need some people with some great walls out there that are visible, on main drags, where people are going to see it, where we can create some beautiful art, but that has a strong message," she says.She's hoping to paint the murals in high traffic areas like the Gaslamp District or along the boardwalks near beaches. She asking business or building owners with free space on their exterior to call her or contact her through her website."I want it to be permanent, so it keeps the issue in people's minds," says Daly.We told her story to the San Diego County Gun Owners group and asked for their response. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man who groped and sexually assaulted four female students as they walked to their off-campus housing near SDSU pleaded guilty Monday.Minda Shewangizaw, 20, pleaded guilty to charges including felony and misdemeanor counts of false imprisonment and sexual battery.All four victims in the case, who ranged in age from 17 to 19, testified during the preliminary hearing.One of the victims said she and her roommate were walking home after midnight when Shewangizaw came up behind her and “grabbed her butt.RELATED: Women testify against UC Riverside student accused of groping near San Diego State”Her roommate said she noticed someone walking behind them before he began to chase them. "I said, You need to leave. He grabbed my hand and pulled me toward him. He pulled my shirt down and grabbed my breast."She said she kicked Shewangizaw and was able to break free.Another victim testified that she and another woman were on a pedestrian bridge heading back to their dorm when she heard footsteps and was smacked on her “behind” by Schewangizaw."I was livid. I said, What are you doing? Don't do that! He laughed it off."She said she kept walking when the defendant made a remark about her breasts before pulling her shirt down and putting his hands on her chest.A witness said Shewangizaw then grabbed her breast and buttocks and trapped her against a rail before laughing and walking away.The sentencing is scheduled for June 12. 1460

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Navy sailor appeared in court Tuesday after authorities say he stole 20 hand grenades from a San Diego-based guided missile destroyer.Authorities say Gunner’s Mate Second Class Aaron Booker was taken into custody in Illinois.According to court documents, personnel assigned to the USS Pinckney discovered that 20 grenades disappeared from their storage crates in 2017.In April 2017, an off-duty law enforcement officer noticed a black backpack leaning against a guardrail on the side of the road along Interstate 15 in northwest Arizona.The bag was standard military issue with “GM2 BOOKER” handwritten on a tag inside the bag. The bag contained 18 of the grenades that were missing from the USS Pinckney.According to authorities, law enforcement is still searching for the two missing grenades.The complaint states that Booker acknowledged to investigators that he drove the same route before reporting to his duty station in March.“A backpack full of grenades on the side of the road is obviously extremely dangerous and could have had resulted in injuries or death,” said U.S. Attorney Adam L. Braverman said. “The theft of explosives is a very serious offense, particularly if it is carried out by an insider with access to military weapons and secrets.”Booker will appear for a detention hearing before being transferred to San Diego. The maximum penalty for the crime is 10 years in prison and a 0,000 fine.  1462

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A non-profit and business owner came together to donate thousands of dollars to families in need during the pandemic Wednesday.Non-profit Black San Diego started up in September with the goal of bolstering Black-owned businesses and giving them tools to succeed.They have a Facebook page with 36,000 members.On December 19th, Porschia Wyatt posted asking for prayers for her family."Recently my husband was laid off from his job, he works for the Cheesecake Factory, so time’s been hard for me and my family," she said.She and her husband have a 15-year-old daughter, 7 and 8-year-old sons and a 20-month old daughter.Getting Christmas presents was going to be hard, and November 16th made it even more difficult."I had just ate pizza and next thing you know I started throwing up and I couldn’t breath or anything so I was rushed to the hospital," she said she had an abdominal blockage.She underwent three surgeries and came home on the 25th. Now she had huge medical bills to worry about, which was what pushed her to type a message to the BSD community.She got an overwhelming response, more than a hundred comments and a surprise at her doorstep Wednesday morning.Jaime Harris, owner of Big Block Realty, was holding a giant check for ,000."There are so many families that are affected you know? Of course, we want to help the Black-owned businesses, but we realize our community is definitely suffering because they’re shut down and without a job," CEO of BSD, Sheri Jones said.She hopes the donation will bridge the gap, make their Christmas a little more merry and spread kindness during a season of giving."I would just like to say thank you and I appreciate the help and I appreciate everyone who helped with my family and reaching out to me and I really appreciate it and god bless everyone," Wyatt said. 1844
