SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diegans are signing up to build accessory dwelling units, or granny flats, in numbers that haven’t been seen in years. According to the city’s development services department people, more than 200 people went through the permitting process in 2018. “It fits for us to build an additional unit, the ADU since the council changed their ordinances,” said San Diego resident Efrain Conrique. Efrain Conrique has been in the same house since the 1960s but is now planning to build a 1,100 square foot accessory dwelling unit in his backyard. The house is for his granddaughter. "Now this way she can not pay for the rental of an apartment and live here,” Conrique said. “So that's a personal thing, but it would work no matter what.” RELATED: Woman builds granny flat to finance retirementThe ease in regulations is having an impact on the building community. "When you build a custom ADU it ads on to the square footage,” said Gregg Cantor of Murray Lampert Design, Build, Remodel. “The resale value is much higher.” Gregg Cantor says he’s working on several projects that wouldn’t have been possible without the recent regulation changes. He says since the City of San Diego streamlined the ADU process, nearly half calls he gets are people looking to build. Geiler says in the past few years city officials have expanded the zones in which ADU’s are allowed, eliminated the parking requirements, increased the size from 700 square feet from 700 to 1200, and waived Development Impact Fees, Facility Benefit Assessment Fees and General Plan Maintenance Fees for the construction of “companion units,” otherwise known as accessory dwelling units or granny flats. “These are all getting approved, and in the cases where we're finding there may be an issue with the setback encroachment or parking we're working with the applicants the homeowners, designers to find solutions,” Geiler said. 2587

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Ranked seventh in the state, an Oceanside High School wrestler makes daily sacrifices to be an elite athlete. But in a recent tournament, Shane Hansen put sportsmanship above being number one. After four matches, Hansen made it to the finals in the La Costa Canyon tournament. However, the final match was getting away from him. "It was the third period, the last period, I was down 12-3, I believe, we went out of bounds, and he ended up dislocating his shoulder," said Hansen. "I felt pretty bad because obviously, he was winning that match, and it wasn't my match to win."Hansen tried to forfeit himself from the match but was not allowed. "When he came up to me and was like, I want to trade my medal, I want to trade my medal, I was just kind of taken aback that in the moment, so quickly, he was wanting to do that," said Hansen's coach, Dustin Long. During the award ceremony, Hansen gave his gold medal to his opponent in exchange for the silver medal. Hansen held up two fingers representing second place in the podium photo, a symbolic gesture to his injured opponent. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer met with leaders from the Marine Corps on Thursday to officially strengthen their partnership. They signed a Memorandum of Understanding between their organizations to work together on "Smart City" technologies such as unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), smart streetlights, renewable energy, and the City's "Get it Done" app. Last year the City of San Diego was selected for a pilot program by the U.S. Department of Transportation to advance the testing of UAS, more commonly referred to as drones. They're already being used by police and fire in Chula Vista. "We will share our experiences, we'll share as we discover uses for data together, and share how advanced technology can benefit the people that we both serve," said Mayor Faulconer. About 34,000 homes and businesses received 48 hours' notice of the possible shut-off to lower the hazard posed by power lines, according to SDG&E. The utility company issued two additional notices Thursday and downgraded the number of affected customers to about 18,000 at 4:45 p.m."Notifications are made via multiple channels: outbound dialer calls, text messages, and emails. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police are asking the pubic for help identifying a group of suspects they say assaulted a male outside a Pacific Beach restaurant this month.Police said the victim got into an argument with a group of men outside Backyard Bar and Grill on Garnet Ave. on April 1, at about 1:30 a.m. During the argument, one of the suspects punched the victim in the face three times.After the victim walked across the street to get away from the group, the suspects followed him and repeatedly punched and kicked him while he was on the ground, police added.The victim was taken to a nearby hospital with major head and facial injuries.
