A principal at Education Alternatives in Bedford, Ohio is accused of having a sexual relationship with a student at the school, who was 17 at the time."He says the relationship started when they were upstairs in the gym alone, that she kissed him on the mouth," said Bedford Police Deputy Chief Rick Suts. "Since then, there had been numerous encounters in her van."The teenager told police that his relationship with Courtney Alfred continued for months.Police said the former student came to them last week. Suts said the school knew about the alleged relationship but after their own investigation said the allegations were not credible. Bedford police disagree."He's saying that he took video of them having sex and in that encounter, you see a tattoo. We got a search warrant to see her tattoo, that tattoo matches the one on the video," added Suts.Police said there were also text messages and that money was transferred from Alfred to the teenager. Police said the teen told them it was to keep him from telling her husband.Scripps station WEWS in Cleveland tried to contact Alfred at her home, but there was no answer. WEWS also called the central office for Education Alternatives, but the call was not returned. WEWS also left two messages for her attorney, Vince Ruffa, but Ruffa also did not return messages.Alfred was arrested. She was in court last week facing a sexual battery charge. A Milwaukee woman applied for a job only to be told by the company that they don't hire people with "ghetto" names.Quinntellia Fields says she received the email response on Monday after applying for a receptionist job at Mantality Health through a third-party site.Mantality Health has multiple locations in the Midwest. Fields said she was applying for a job at their Brookfield, Wisconsin location."First, I thought it was a joke," she said.The quick response looked legit, until she got to the line that said, "Unfortunately we do not consider candidates that have suggestive 'ghetto' names.""That’s pretty offensive," Fields said. "I was pretty shocked and then I was hurt."She contacted the company who told her the outside job board was hacked.In a statement posted on the company's website, Mantality says it's working with law enforcement and considering appropriate legal action."We share the anger and frustration of those who received these bogus emails," the company's statement read in part."Seems like the typical response," Fields said. "If someone’s in trouble on the internet, 'Oh it’s just a hack.'"Fields isn't the only job seeker who received this reply. A US advisory panel has released their recommendations on how a future COVID-19 vaccine should be distributed, and is now seeking public comments on their draft plan.The National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine published their discussion draft Tuesday afternoon on their website. It is meant to “assist policymakers in planning for equitable allocation of a vaccine against COVID-19.”The draft plan has a four-phased approach to handle the intense demand for and limited supply of the vaccine when it is first developed.“While major efforts are being made to have a significant supply of COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible, the committee has been tasked with considering the tough choices that will need to be made for allocating the tightly constrained initial supplies,” said committee co-chair Helene Gayle, president and CEO of the Chicago Community TrustThe plan states in the first phase “would be ‘frontline’ health workers—health professionals who are involved in direct patient care, as well as those in transport, environmental services staff, or other health care facility services, who risk exposure to bodily fluids or aerosols. Under conditions of such scarcity, access should not be defined by professional title, but rather by the individual’s actual risk of exposure to COVID-19.”Their plan also gives higher priority to older Americans living in group settings. They cite data showing about 80 percent of all COVID-19 deaths in the US occurred in people over the age of 65, and a significant proportion of them were people living in long-term care facilities.“Recognizing the importance of education and child development,” tier 2 includes teachers and school staff, as well as those with pre-existing conditions that put them at a heightened risk of severe complications from COVID-19 and those living in group housing situations not included in tier 1.The group states that by the time there is enough of the vaccine to reach tier 4, “ideally, these individuals would be willing to participate in an egalitarian process (such as a lottery) if there are persistent local or regional shortages in this phase.”The group that developed this draft was formed in July at the request of the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.“We are pleased to help inform the government’s decision-making process and provide our expert advice for priority-setting for the equitable allocation of potential COVID-19 vaccines,” said National Academy of Medicine President Victor J. Dzau. “Input from the public on this draft framework, especially from communities disproportionately affected by COVID-19, is essential to produce a final report that is objective, balanced, and inclusive.”The public comment period will be open until 11:59 p.m. on Friday, September 4. A massive cloud of Sahara Desert dust is blanketing the Caribbean as it heads toward the U.S. with a size and concentration that experts say hasn’t been seen in half a century. The thick dust cloud, known as the Saharan Air Layer, is making a 5,000 mile trip from the northern Africa desert to North and Central America along the east to west Trade Winds along the equator. The Saharan Air Layer is between 5,000 and 20,000 feet above the Earth's surface, and dust plumes travel over the Atlantic Ocean several times a year between spring and fall. This year's dust plume is thicker than normal, the concentration of particles in Puerto Rico are the highest in decades. Air quality across most of the Caribbean region fell to record “hazardous” levels Monday and experts who nicknamed the event the “Godzilla dust cloud” warned people to stay indoors and use air filters if they have one. 896
A suburban Atlanta police officer resigned after his department said he used foul language and inappropriate tactics during the arrest of a 65-year-old grandmother during a traffic stop, recorded on a police dashboard camera.Alpharetta Officer James Legg had been called in as backup during a May 4 traffic stop because the Lyft driver would not sign a ticket and refused another officer's order to get out of her car, officials said.In a letter to Alpharetta Public Safety Director John Robison released Friday, Legg said he felt he behaved appropriately and followed his training."I judged her actions to be passive resistance and used very limited force to end a multiple minute encounter with the suspect," he said.
