SANTIAGO, Chile, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chilean President Sebastian Pinera and visiting Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong met here Wednesday to discuss the development of relations between their two countries since the establishment of diplomatic ties 40 years ago.Pinera said that Chile was the first South American country to establish diplomatic relations with China. In this endeavor, the two countries need to keep exploring new ways and channels of cooperation, in order to promote China-Chile cultural exchange and cooperation to a higher level.And thirdly, efforts should be made to further increase bilateral educational exchange and cooperation to promote China-Chile friendship.On the same day, Liu also met with the Chilean Education Minister Joaquin Lavin and Director of Chilean National Science and Technology Commission Jose Aguirela, exchanging views with them on strengthening cooperation in the fields of education and science and technology between China and Chile.Liu also attended a cerenomy for signing documents on bilateral educational and scientific-technological cooperation.

BEIJING, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman on Wednesday said Chinese President Hu Jintao's state visit to Washington later this month will be "exciting and historic.""State visit is the highest level of welcome that is accorded to a foreign head of state. Hu's state visit is a very exiting and historic time in U.S.-China relationship," Huntsman told a press briefing on Wednesday.Hu will pay a state visit to the United States from Jan.18 to 21 at the invitation of U.S. President Barack Obama."It is the first time that the two heads of state meet when they represent the two largest economies...Their influence is derived from the world, not form a region," Huntsman said.The ambassador said it was noteworthy that over the years Obama and Hu had met 7 times and developed a "friendly, cordial and confident" relationship.He hailed efforts on both sides to build a positive, cooperative and comprehensive U.S.-China relationship, citing the high-level meetings like Strategic and Economic Dialogue, Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade as well as some cabinet-level visits like Defense Secretary Robert Gates' just concluded trip to Beijing.In a relationship that is as mature, direct and candid as U.S.-China relationship, there will inevitably be some areas of disagreements, Huntsman said."Divergences are largely outweighed by areas of convergences," he said.Ambassador said the United States and China would increasingly find common ground."As both countries are on the world stage, they will see a similar level of responsibility in terms of problems and deal realistically with the issues that confront the world, ranging from Iran nuclear issues and Korean Peninsula tensions to economic rebalance and climate change," Huntsman said.

HONG KONG, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang said on Saturday the government will not slack off in its fight against drugs, despite a 20 percent drop in the number of drug abusers aged below 21 in the first half of this year.Speaking at the 2010 Fight Crime Conference, Tsang said both the government and the community attach great importance to drug problems.Although the government's efforts in beating drugs have started to deliver results, it will not slack off and will continue to allocate money to anti-drug programs, he said.Praising law-enforcement officers' professionalism in maintaining law and order in Hong Kong, Tsang said the city's crime rate continued to stay at a low level.According to Chief Secretary Henry Tang, Hong Kong's crime situation for the year's first 10 months remained stable, with overall crime dropping 3.2 percent.

CAPE TOWN, South Africa, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping held talks with South African President Jacob Zuma here on Wednesday, calling for all-round cooperation and richer content of the comprehensive strategic partnership and strengthened coordination in international policies.During the talks, Xi first conveyed the warm greetings from Chinese President Hu Jintao to South African President Zuma.Xi hailed the Beijing Declaration on the Establishment of Comprehensive Strategic Partnership signed by the leaders of the two countries during Zuma's visit to China in August this year, saying that it has lifted China-South Africa relations to a new high and will guide the bilateral relations in the new era.Xi, who arrived here on Tuesday for a four-day official visit to South Africa, said the main purpose of his visit is to co-host with South African Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe the fourth plenary session of the China-South Africa Bi-National Commission (BNC).Xi said this plenary session marks a significant step in fulfilling the goals proposed by the two sides in the Beijing Declaration and BNC serves as an important platform to push forward bilateral cooperation in all areas and further implement the consensuses reached by the leaders of the two countries.He said China is willing to work together with South Africa to promote the all-round cooperation, hoping that the two sides will continue to maintain closer high-level political contacts, and further deepen pragmatic cooperation especially in the areas such as trade, economy, agricultural technology and professional training.China wishes to strengthen close coordination in key international issues with South Africa, said Xi. BEIJING, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Foreign direct investment (FDI) into China hit a record 105.74 billion U.S. dollars last year, up 17.4 percent year on year, the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) announced Tuesday.In December alone, China attracted 14.03 billion U.S. dollars of FDI, up 15.6 percent year on year, making it the 17th consecutive month of FDI growth since August 2009.The rapid FDI growth could be attributed to robust development in the service sector and the country's central and western regions, said MOC spokesman Yao Jian.FDI in the service sector rose 28.6 percent last year and that in central and western regions climbed 27.6 percent year on year, Yao said.
