SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Students and teachers from two classes at Sage Canyon School in Carmel Valley will have to return to online distance learning for two weeks after two people tested positive for COVID-19.In a statement to ABC 10News, Jenni Huh, the Del Mar Union School District Director of Student Services, said:“The District has confirmed two positive cases of COVID-19 at Sage Canyon School. All students and staff who were directly exposed have been contacted and will be quarantining for 14 days. The District has been in consultation with the San Diego County Department of Public Health.”Parent Amy Berkley said she was notified of the two positive cases on Sunday. She has two sons who attend the school and said her third-grader was in the same class as one of the people who tested positive.“They had two students in the school test positive, one was in first grade and the other in third grade,” Berkley said. “We got the notification on Sunday, and by Monday morning, all class materials were available for pickup, really easy and convenient.”While the positive cases are alarming for some parents, Berkley, who is also the PTA president, said she was pleased with how the situation was handled. Her son didn’t miss a school day as the classrooms impacted transitioned back to distance learning Monday.“We picked up a Chromebook, learning packet, homework worksheet, whiteboard all the material they’ll need; it was very well thought out.”According to the Del Mar Union School District’s safe reopening plan, if a student or teacher tests positive for COVID-19, the whole class will quarantine for 14 days, and learning will be offered remotely. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Several San Diego families got their loved ones home in time for the holidays.The Crew of the Future USS Tulsa arrived in San Diego Wednesday.  The ship is a brand new littoral combat ship that completed its maiden voyage from the Austal Shipyard in Mobile Alabama.The crew, from San Diego, had been gone for eight months. Before arriving in San Diego, the ship made several port calls and completed a successful transit through the Panama Canal.The ship’s commissioning ceremony is scheduled for Feb. 16, 2019, in San Francisco.  That is when the vessel will officially join the fleet. 628

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Several business sectors will be cleared to reopen indoor activities with modifications next week in San Diego County under the state's new guidance, according to local health officials.Under California's new blueprint for reopening amid the coronavirus pandemic, starting Monday, Aug. 31, San Diego County can reopen indoor operations at the following businesses with modifications:Restaurants for dine-in, places of worship, museums, and movie theaters at a maximum of 25% capacity or 100 people, whichever is less;Gyms, yoga studios, and fitness centers at a maximum of 10% capacity;Hair salons, barbershops, nail salons, and body waxing studios;Libraries and bookstores at a maximum of 50% capacity;Shopping malls at a maximum of 50% capacity, with closed common areas, and reduced food court capacity;Aquariums and zoos at a maximum of 25% capacityBusinesses that have been reopened under their safe reopening plans may have to be modified to meet the state's new percentages on capacity, according to Gary Johnston, the county's Chief Resiliency Officer on Reopening."The safe reopening plans, you need to modify those and express on those plans how you're going to adhere to the requirements that came out with the state," Johnston said.California's new rules for reopening are based on a four-tier, color-coded system that counties will move through based on their number of cases (case rate) and the percentage of positive tests. The system replaces the state's monitoring list.Based on the state’s new tool, San Diego County is in the red "Substantial" tier. The red tier covers counties with a case rate of four to seven daily new cases per 100,000 people and 5% to 8% positive tests. So by decreasing the capacity this will help with increased risk and increased exposure," Wooten said. "We are following what's on the website ... as it relates to what's being recommended for tier two."Bars, breweries, and distilleries that do not serve food are still not cleared to reopen for indoor operations, according to the state. Theme parks are also not permitted to reopen.Wooten cautioned that the success of reopening any indoor operations this time around depends on compliance with the guidance and locals being safe."This time what we hope will happen, but it relies on people's behavior, is that as we are opening up 25% or 50% of capacity, not full 100%," Wooten said. "As we see issues people should also be clear that we will shut down entities if they are not following the guidelines and if there are particularly outbreaks occurring as a result of not following those non-pharmaceutical strategies."In order for San Diego County to move up a tier, it must stay in tier two for at least three weeks. Then to move up, it must meet the next tier's criteria for two consecutive weeks. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego State University resumed some in-person classes Monday, allowing several thousand students to come back to campus.Monday was the first time students were allowed at school since in-person classes were suspended in September due to the rising number of reported positive COVID-19 cases, both on and off campus.SDSU fine arts graduate student Naomi Chicoine has been taking classes almost entirely online this semester because of the outbreaks on and off campus.She said, "The hardest part is not knowing what's going to happen next. Are we going to be able to stay on campus or not?”The school has nearly 1,200 cases since school started in late August. At one point, the case numbers were high enough to put San Diego County at risk of being knocked out of the state of California’s red tier and into the stricter purple tier.Students are now being asked to do self-assessments and stay home if they're feeling sick.Before they go into a class, students get their temperature checked at one of two kiosks on campus. A device scans their temperature, then displays green or red, indicating if they are fever-free.Students get a wristband if they're cleared, which is date-stamped, and it allows them to go to class. The process takes less than a minute and saves professors from having to scan students themselves.Everyone coming onto campus for class -- students and staff -- is also required to get tested at least every 14 days.The school is also promising to strictly enforce mask and social distancing compliance. Classes are limited to mostly those required by students for graduation, around 3,000 students per week who will come to campus.The California State University system has also expanded SDSU's ability to enforce policies.
