WASHINGTON (AP) — More than a million Americans sought unemployment benefits last week.That's the word from a Labor Department report that indicates companies are cutting more jobs as the coronavirus surges through the Sunbelt and some of the nation’s most populous states. Layoffs in Florida, Georgia and California rose by tens of thousands.The number of laid-off workers seeking assistance remained stuck at 1.3 million. That number is lower than the previous week but still illustrates the devastation wrought by widespread shutdowns.The U.S. has now suffered 17 straight weeks of jobless claims in the millions as the country continues to combat the novel coronavirus.Case counts are rising in 40 states and 22 states have either paused or reversed their efforts to reopen their economies, according to Bank of America. 832

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Jury selection is expected to take all week in the trial of former NFL tight end Kellen Winslow II. The San Diego football star and son of Chargers Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow Senior pleaded not guilty to charges that he raped two homeless women in Encinitas last year. He's also charged with raping an unconscious seventeen-year-old girl back when Winslow was nineteen. Prosecutors say he was out of custody on million bail in connection with the felony case when he got in trouble again. Prosecutors say he fondled himself in front of a 77- year-old woman at a Carlsbad gym, asked her if she liked it, and groped her while she was in a hot tub at the same gym.Jan Ronis is a San Diego defense attorney not affiliated with the case, but watching it closely. "From what I've seen at the preliminary examination, everyone that testified seemed to have a lot of credibility. These were older women, you would extend the greatest credibility to that kind of witness," said Ronis. Winslow played ten seasons with the NFL. His defense team is reportedly planning to call two psychiatrists to testify. It's unclear if CTE, or Chronic traumatic encephalopathy will play a role in that defense. Ronis says it might not make a difference. "You can still be responsible for your conduct , criminally responsible, after having sustained a traumatic brain injury or something of that nature. It's different than say, your mental health issue was such that rendered you incapable of understanding the nature of your conduct that you couldn't understand the difference between right and wrong, " said Ronis. WASHINGTON (AP) — A Texas congressman says he released video and photos of migrant women being held at a border facility in his state so the public could better understand "awful" conditions under President Donald Trump's policies.Democratic Rep. Joaquin Castro said in an interview that he had no second thoughts about taking and sharing the images after officials had asked the lawmakers on a facility tour to leave their cellphones behind. He posted the images after visiting a station in El Paso."There's a reason these conditions are kept secret because these conditions are awful," Castro, chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, told The Associated Press.Castro said because lawmakers have oversight authority, they should not be denied access or the ability to share their findings.Castro said he holds out hope that Congress will impose standards of care and seek broader immigration reforms, though lawmakers have been unable to do so.Trump signed an emergency .6 billion border funding package into law this week after lawmakers split over putting restrictions on how the money can be spent. Some House Democrats wanted more standards on the facilities, but they ran up against resistance from centrist colleagues and those in the Senate.
