BEIJING, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- The central parity rate of the yuan, China's currency Renminbi (RMB), jumped 113 basis points, or 0.17 percent, Tuesday to a new record high at 6.6997 per U.S. dollar, according to the data released by the China Foreign Exchange Trading System.Tuesday's yuan central parity against U.S. dollar beat the previous record of 6.7110 per U.S. dollar on Monday and extended the Chinese currency's gains to eight consecutive trading days.The yuan has picked up its strength against the U.S. dollars and seen increased volatility in the trading days since the People's Bank of China (PBOC), the central bank, announced on June 19 this year to increase exchange rate flexibility.Based on Tuesday's central parity, the Chinese currency has strengthened against the U.S. dollar by 1.87 percent from the rate of 6.8275 per U.S. dollar that was set a day before the PBOC's pledge to increase flexibility.On China's foreign exchange spot market, the yuan can rise or fall 0.5 percent from the central parity rate during trading each day.According to Tuesday's central parity rates, the yuan's value strengthened against all the currencies within its basket with lower rates.The PBOC released the yuan's central parity rates against a basket of currencies -- the U.S. dollar, the euro, the Japanese yen, the Hong Kong dollar, the British pound and the Malaysian Ringgit.The yuan's parity rate against the euro was set by the central bank at 8.7522 Tuesday, lower from 8.7595 Monday.The yuan's rate against 100 yen was 7.8204 Tuesday, compared with 7.8275 Monday.The Chinese currency soared 814 basis points against the British pound with the central parity rate being set at 10.42 from Monday's 10.5014.The central parity of RMB against the U.S. dollar is based on a weighted average of enquired prices from all market makers before the opening of the market in each business day.The central parity of RMB against the other five currencies is based on the central rate of RMB against the U.S. dollar of the same business day as well as the exchange rates of the five currencies against the U.S. dollar at 9 a.m. (0100 GMT) of the same business day in the international foreign exchange market.

BEIJING, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- China shut down 1,355 small coal mines with a total production capacity of 125.19 million tonnes by the end of September as part of efforts to restructure its mining industry, the National Energy Administration (NEA) said Thursday.The latest figures indicate that the NEA had surpassed its annual target of eliminating 121.67 million tonnes of outdated production capacity this year.According to the NEA, 1,539 small and dangerous coal mines with 121.67 million tonnes of outdated capacity had to be closed in China this year to meet the country's requirement for preventing deadly accidents and reducing carbon dioxide emissions and pollution.The energy watchdog also said it would strengthen inspection on small coal mines for the rest of the year and ensure that the mining restructuring plan be completed as scheduled this year.China has long relied on coal to fuel its rapid economic growth. About three-fourths of its electricity is generated from coal-fired power stations, according to the NEA.

MUSCAT, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- A top Chinese delegation will sign agreements on two-way investment and personnel training with Oman amid efforts to deepen the cooperation between China and the Gulf oil-rich Sultanate, Chinese ambassador to Oman Pan Weifang said Friday.Jia Qinglin, China's top political advisor, will pay a three- day good-will visit to Oman starting from Saturday. HEFEI, Sep. 4 (Xinhua) -- Innovation in Chinese enterprises is steadily increasing with more patents filed and more funds invested in research and development (R&D), the China Enterprise Confederation (CEC) said Saturday.The top 500 Chinese enterprises possessed 169,000 patents in 2010, up 13.3 percent from last year, according to a report released by the CEC.Among the top 500 companies, 41 had more than 1,000 patents, while 36 companies owned more than 200 patents for innovations, the report said.Chinese enterprises were also investing a larger share of their revenues into R&D.Each of the top 500 firms allocated, on average, 775 million yuan (113.93 million U.S. dollars) into R&D, an increase of 14.4 percent from 2009 and accounting for 1.4 percent of their total revenues, the CEC said.Of the 500 firms, 17 spent more than five percent of their revenues on R&D, while another 60 enterprises invested from five to 10 percent of their revenues into R&D, according to the report.In 2009, China filed 7,946 international patents, up 29.7 percent from 2008 and ranking fifth in the world, according to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
