It is with great sadness that I post about the passing of Nikita Waligwa, the sweet, warm, talented girl whom I worked with on the film, Queen Of Katwe. She played Gloria with such vibrancy. In her real life she had the enormous challenge of battling brain cancer. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and community as they come to terms with having to say goodbye so soon. MILWAUKEE, Wis. – This isn’t Hawaii or the California coast or even Florida. It’s Wisconsin where surfers don’t pray for waves, they work with what they got. “So, it could be a Wednesday night or a Sunday morning, so you got to jump on it,” one local Wisconsin surfer said. In a region known for beer, cheese, and very cold winter, the surf scene is growing and Jake Bresette is helping lead the charge. “I just love it, man,” he said. “Anytime I can get out into the water, whether it’s one foot or 10 feet, it’s always a good time.” More and more surfers are keeping up on a well-kept secret: with the right weather, the waves on the Great Lakes can be just that – great! Outside of the water, Bresette owns and operates Lake Effect Surf Shop in Milwaukee where he sells surf and skate gear and offers lessons to anyone who wants to learn how to surf. “Yeah, we actually do them with or without waves,” he said. “So, if there are waves that’s great, we’ll get out here and score some waves. But, if not, we’ll bring out some big paddle boards.” While introducing the sport of surfing to a new generation, Bresette always remembers to honor the local pioneers of the sport. “We didn’t start the surf scene here,” he said. “We’re just helping to continue the progression.” Bresette says the key to that progression is to get out when the surf is up. “I know it sounds a little cliché, but it is really about the journey as well as the success of finding waves,” he said. My heart breaks this morning at the loss of NBC audio technician Larry Edgeworth (pictured right) due to COVID19. I adored Larry. We traveled together for two straight months on a campaign in 2008 and he was always the most warm, most professional, most loving. All hours of the day and night, no matter how hungry or tired or stressed we were - he was always a joy. He loved his work and excelled at it. He loved his colleagues and boy did we love him. Kyle Rittenhouse, accused of shooting and killing two people during protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin, has been released from jail on bond Friday.A spokesperson with the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department announced that Rittenhouse's attorney paid the million cash bond that was set by a judge earlier this month.Rittenhouse thus is no longer in custody at the Kenosha County Jail, according to the spokesperson.On Oct. 30, an Illinois judge OK'ed the extradition of Rittenhouse back to Wisconsin to face homicide charges.Rittenhouse is charged with first-degree intentional homicide for the death of 26-year-old Silver Lake resident Anthony Huber, attempted first-degree intentional homicide for the shooting of Gauge Grosskreutz, 26, of West Allis, and first-degree reckless homicide for the death of Joseph Rosenbaum, 36, of Kenosha, according to a criminal complaint.Rittenhouse is also charged with two counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety for shooting his AR-15-style rifle toward other people in a crowd, and with possession of a dangerous weapon by a person under 18.The shooting happened on Aug. 25, after a white police officer shot Jacob Blake seven times in the back, paralyzing him from the waist down.
