In the midst of a political battle over funding for the United States Postal Service, it appears the Department of Veterans Affairs has been looking into alternative delivery services.A veterans group called Disabled Vets of America posted a statement to their website explaining the situation, after they had approached the VA about concerns their members had shared.“The VA has now confirmed to us that the United States Postal Service (USPS), which is responsible for delivering about 90% of all VA mail order prescriptions, has indeed been delayed in delivering these critical medications by an average of almost 25% over the past year, with many locations experiencing much more significant delays,” the statement posted to the DAV’s website states.The VA acknowledged it was looking into delivery services outside the USPS in an email exchange with the DAV, according to CNN.“To help mitigate these postal delays, the VA has been forced to switch to alternative delivery services in a number of areas across the country and is taking other actions to expedite processing and delivery of prescriptions,” the statement from DAV reads.The VA has had an increase in demand for mail-order prescriptions during the coronavirus pandemic, they told CNN. Explaining that the VA has always used a “variety of prescription delivery methods to ensure timely delivery.”Spokesperson Christina Noel said they monitor prescription delivery times throughout the country. 1467

In May, most chain restaurants will have to post calories on their menus. Some restaurants already do adhere to the new federal requirement. But just how accurate are these calorie counts? People like Jodi Rogers, a realtor who tries to eat healthy and exercise a few times a week, says she doesn't count every calorie but she finds calorie listings helpful when ordering. She admits sometimes she feels bombarded by all the numbers. "I see them pretty much everywhere I go, I feel like," she said. "I think it gives you a little bit of guidance as to what you're looking at and what you might actually be consuming."The test included calorie counts on three items from three national chains. The test included two club sandwiches with fries from Denny's. The menu said there would be 1100 calories in each order. McDonald's promised 540 calories for its signature Big Mac. The test included two sandwiches and no sides. The test also included two Steak and White Cheddar Paninis from Panera. Each should have 940 calories.The food was taken by The Now to a lab for testing. The technician ground up and scientifically analyzed the food to find out how many calories were in each. The results showed that the menus can sometimes be inaccurate.At McDonald's, the 540-calorie sandwiches came out just slightly higher at 581 calories and 552 calories. That's not much of difference, said dietitian Jessica Crandall. "If the recipe calls for a teaspoon of mayo put on a sandwich, maybe when the person in the line who is making the sandwich uses a tablespoon instead," said Crandall.At Panera, the food didn't come in over; it was exactly the opposite. The sandwiches were expected to have 940 calories but measured in with 149 fewer calories and 205 fewer calories.At Denny's the sandwich and fries should have been 1100 but both were over, one by 180 calories and the other by 110.Crandall said, "It's an extra two or three hundred calories. If someone is trying to lose weight that can actually hold their weight loss."Think of it this way: Jodi would have to work out for an extra 18 minutes just to burn those extra 180 calories.No one regulates whether menus are accurate. The FDA says restaurants must explain how they came up with the calorie results only if the FDA asks. The FDA says the requirement to list calorie counts on menus "applies to restaurants and similar retail food establishments if they are part of a chain of 20 or more locations, doing business under the same name, offering for sale substantially the same menu items and offering for sale restaurant-type foods."Jodi says she doesn't expect every restaurant to be perfect and she still plans to use calories listed on the menu for some general guidance and will keep exercising. "I think you have to give yourself a little bit of wiggle room and realize that whoever's preparing the food probably isn't getting exactly the same serving size and it might not be exact same food as what was provided in their test kitchen," she said. 3129

IRAPUATO, Mexico (AP) — Local Mexican officials again helped thousands of Central American migrants find rides Sunday on the latest leg of their journey toward the U.S. border.At a toll plaza to the west of the central Mexico city of Queretaro, where the group spent Saturday night, police prevented migrants from waylaying trucks on their own, but officers did help them find vehicles for rides.The government of Queretaro said via Twitter that 6,531 migrants had moved through the state between Friday and Saturday. A digital marketplace for working mothers aims to make sure that women remain in the workforce and stay supported.As a single mom of three, Chandra Sanders does it all. And all was fine until the pandemic. “Due to COVID-19, my most recent project that I accepted was in commercial and retail, and that industry was seriously impacted from COVID-19 and was the first to shut down. Due to that shutdown, my project was shut down along with my income,” Sanders said.She refused to be negative though. And while stressed and anxious about her income, she turned to the internet.“I found the Mom Project doing a regular Google search online,” Sanders recalls. When she found it, The Mom Project happened to be hiring for its own team. She landed a job and couldn't be happier. Chief Community Officer Colleen Curtis says The Mom Project has now served over 2,000 companies and connected thousands of moms with employment.“People are coming to the realization that this can’t be how it is for everyone, forever,” Curtis said.The Mom Project was born in 2016, by you guessed it, a mom. Who, while on maternity leave, read a statistic. It said that 43 percent of skilled women leave the workforce after becoming mothers. Founder Allison Robinson didn't want moms like her to choose between a career and a family. Four years later and the digital marketplace is seeing change.“We’ve seen an incredible response from both sides of what I would say the marketplace, as a mom, we knew that the pain point was there for moms and it was really that we were feeling the tensions between being a great mom and being great at work but what we’re seeing is the incredible demand from companies,” Curtis said.When we asked what challenges women face now, as they navigate through the pandemic, Curtis says The Mom Project is noticing some tough things. “It's been disproportionately difficult for moms, specifically moms of color, but also, just moms. The emotional labor of adapting to new situations: work from home, kids are now home, all the way from babies to college kids, and your village has been stripped away,” Curtis said.Chandra Sanders says part of her new role at The Mom Project is to help other moms. Specifically, to help moms of color find and achieve her same success.“I must say it's the first job that I’ve had that I’ve felt welcome as a mom, as a woman, I didn’t have to hide that and as woman of color I didn’t have to hide that either,” Sanders said.Sanders says her former roles in commercial and retail industry were challenging. "Being a Black woman in an industry where I’m the only Black woman you have to be very careful about what you say, how you dress, the tone of voice that you’re using and you have to be careful about everything that you do,” Sanders said.Now she's on a mission to both change the workforce and pave the way for others.“Many companies now have these initiatives, want to hire a diverse workforce they really want that- their human resource departments are in charge of reaching out to the mom project and to candidates to ensure their workforce is diverse.”And she says, she's been there. Laid off, struggling as a single mom. She wants others to know, focusing on the good and the positive will help propel you forward.“I can do it, and I did it and we’re going to make sure other people can do it too,” Sanders said.
