San Diego (KGTV)- A local middle and high school team sweep a popular robotics competition beating out groups from all over the world.They call themselves “Team Inspiration.” The group of students has been working with robotics for nearly ten years.The team is comprised of six different schools in San Diego, including: Del Norte High, Scripps Ranch High, Rancho Bernardo High, Westview High, The Cambridge School, and Black Mountain Middle School.Last month the team competed in the 2020 International RoboSub Competition. Each team had to build an underwater robot.“The basic tasks include going underwater, seeing and recognizing images underwater, and going to wave points underwater,” says team member Colin Szeto.This Is the second year the group participated in the competition. Due to COVID-19, the competition was done virtually this time around.“It was a pretty good equalizer because we all got the same zoom playing field,” says Aditya Mavalankar.The student updated their robot design from last year and built an additional robot for the competition.“The idea was that both of them would go in the water together to distribute the tasks so that we could have more of an advantage,” says Ashiria Goel.The students also built the sensor navigation parts on the devices. It can “basically tell how far it is from other objects,” says Mavalankar. “We have cameras on multiple sides of the robots. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — When the pandemic forced San Diego's breweries to close, many turned to canning in order to continue selling their brews.Virginia Morrison, CEO and co-founder of Second Chance Beer Company, told ABC 10News anchor Lindsey Pena canned beers is now the majority of their revenue."For us, that's really our only revenue stream now," Morrison said, adding that there was already a shift in popularity from glass to cans. "We've been putting out more cans since COVID than we've ever done before. We used to have maybe three or four releases, now I think at one point we had 14 cause that's all we can do. Every bit of beer we're making we're putting in cans."Now, the aluminum supply is having a hard time keeping up with demand. Morrison said a couple of weeks ago, the Brewers Association warned members of an aluminum can shortage.Morrison said the manufacturers her brewery works with are still able to fulfill orders, but she's unsure for how much longer."We need to know and plan and also work with them really closely to figure out how to minimally impact both our businesses," said Morrison.The Aluminum Association said in a statement, "The aluminum beverage can manufacturing industry has seen unprecedented demand for this environmentally-friendly container prior to and especially during the COVID-19 pandemic."But according to the Can Manufacturer's Institute, aluminum isn't in short supply, but can makers are struggling to keep up with the demand.To make matters worse for Second Chance and other local companies, they're competing for the same supply big beverage makers use. That's because the coronavirus pandemic is causing a national coin shortage.Money is money. But right now, paper is not as valuable as metal for Pacific Beach resident, Michele Pagnano."I go through a good amount of change on a regular basis," Pagnano said.He uses his apartment complex's coin laundry about three to four times a week. So when he was running low on coins, he headed to the bank, like he always does."Three weeks ago, I was at Wells Fargo," Pagnano said. "I wanted to get worth [of quarters] so that it could hold me over for a couple of weeks. And the teller says she could only give me . I went around to a few more banks, and they all had that same practice in place."There's a reason for that. The Federal Reserve says there is a coin shortage caused by the pandemic. Weeks ago, the US Mint reduced coin production to protect its employees from the virus. Plus, with more people shopping online or using touch-less payment methods, cash, especially coins, is not circulating like it use to."If there's none in circulation, it becomes a toilet paper panic again, just like at the beginning of the pandemic," Pagnano said.But Pagnano says he was not going to give up on clean clothes that easily."I even went around to a couple of laundry mats to try to get some quarters from them," Pagnano. "None of them were allowing you to take the quarters off the premises. One guy even told me that he only had in circulation for their entire laundry mat."He also went on Facebook to see if any of his neighbors can do a swap. He even contacted his landlord for help."I already reached out to the landlord and asked if we could buy back the quarters that are already in the machines," Pagnano said. "Hopefully, that is something we can make happen to alleviate the problem, at least for our complex."His last resort? On a whim, Pagnano says he walked into San Diego County Credit Union, which is just down the street from his home. To his surprise, he got lucky."We got the million-dollar quarters right here!"
