SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A growing number of apps and online video games are creating new opportunities for hate groups to recruit young people with little oversight, experts say.The information comes about a month after a 19-year-old honors student allegedly shot four people inside a Poway synagogue, killing one person.Dr. Peter Simi, a Chapman University professor who has studied hate groups for more than 20 years, say they are feeling emboldened in a way not seen before. Simi pointed to the charged anti-immigration and anti-Muslim rhetoric that has become mainstream has given the groups new confidence. "We have a long history of these groups that we don't talk nearly enough about because we're in kind of the denial game," Simi said. "The last several years, the white supremacist movement is emboldened in a way that certainly goes beyond anything I've seen in 24 years."RELATED: Shooting at Poway synagogue leaves one dead, three injuredSimi said the groups will use a soft-sell method, drawing people in with subtle white supremacist ideas. They use that introduction as an avenue for further discussion before growing more explicit. The groups, which have posted fliers on San Diego college campuses, are also recruiting young people through apps and video games.For instance, a suspected hate group targeted Ben Hedgspeth's 17-year-old son through a meme app."They were coming from a particular religious background and they were trying to recruit him into their online chat space," he said. "It frustrates me to know that those people are out there approaching our children."Simi said ignoring the groups won't work and schools aren't always doing enough. To start, subscription programs like Circle and Bark can do things like filter content and set limits. Bark will also alert parents to communication such as hate speech, sex acts and depression. But there's one place safeguards still lag: Video games. Bark Chief Parenting Officer Titania Jordan said it's because people communicate verbally - via headset - on popular online games like Fortnite, Roadblocks and Minecraft. She said children need to be instructed never to divulge any personally identifying information that can make them easy to locate, and then lured into a private chat. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A police pursuit involving a man who failed to yield that started in the Los Angeles area took authorities all the way to San Diego Thursday.The suspect, later identified as Karl Flores, 34, was driving a red Honda Civic when he failed to yield on Washington Boulevard at about 11 a.m., according to California Highway Patrol. The man had first been reported as a stolen vehicle suspect, but police eventually said that was not the case.Flores then took police on a pursuit through the Los Angeles area, at one point hitting a pedestrian riding a scooter. He continued fleeing police, avoided more PIT maneuver attempts, and drove from southbound Interstate 405 to Interstate 5 into San Diego.The vehicle stopped on I-5 near Las Pulgas Rd. at about 1:30 p.m., prompting a police standoff and Sig Alert was issued for both directions of I-5 at Las Pulgas Rd. CHP said it appeared the vehicle had run out of gas. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A judge decided Friday to place a sexually violent predator in the East County community of Boulevard. Michael Joseph Martinez, 64 has multiple previous convictions including child molestation and lewd and lascivious acts upon a child under 14, according to County Supervisor Dianne Jacob’s office.The judge added Friday that the sheriff’s department will be extra vigilant and security will be heightened.The judge decided to place Martinez at the Department of State Hospitals recommended location of 2135 McCain Valley Road. The schools closest to the address include Clover Flats Elementary School and Jacumba Elementary School, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.A mother of one of the victims from 25 years ago spoke at the hearing saying, “I know that you can’t change the order and I’m glad that there’s going to be very strict ordering, but I hope this doesn’t happen to another child or family.”RELATED: Dianne Jacob slams proposed placement of predatorJacob said the placement would put public safety at risk. She adds that several sexually violent predators have been placed in East County in recent years and in some cases, the convicts ended up violating the conditions of their placement.In a letter to Judge David M. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A motorcyclist was killed Monday night, after a crash with a suspected DUI driver in Linda Vista. Police tell 10News the driver of a Nissan ran a red light on Genesee Avenue, slamming into the motorcyclist and dragging them under the car for at least 100 feet. His 8-year-old daughter was in the car when the crash happened. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new study conducted by Zillow shows that more college graduates in San Diego are living with their parents.The share of graduates living with their parents has grown from 14 percent in 2005 to 25 percent in 2016.Similarly, the study found that less graduates are living with a romantic partner. In 2005, 38 percent of college graduates were living with a romantic partner compared to 32 percent in 2016.And it’s not just in San Diego. Nationally, 28 percent of college graduated lived with their parents in 2016 compared to just 19 percent in 2005.“In the mid-2000s, lending standards and an abundant supply of homes made it easier for recent grads to move out and form their own households instead of living with their parents,” said Zillow senior economist Aaron Terrazas. “Those market conditions have changed drastically over the past decade as we went through the housing bust. Adding to that, as many millennials who recently graduated into the Great Recession can attest, underemployment or more precarious jobs make it much harder to save up enough to move out. When rents keep climbing and competition is fierce for the most affordable homes, living with mom and dad can be a good option to build up some savings.”Zillow says when the housing bubble was at its height it was easier to get a loan and the building boom meant there were more homes available. Tighter lending standards and less housing inventory today make it more difficult to break into the home-buying market.  1531
