SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The coronavirus has touched the lives of people of all ages, but none more than seniors. Despite ongoing challenges, residents at a senior living facility are finding ways to stay positive. You can’t see their smiles but you can tell they’re there.Residents at Belmont Village Senior Living in Sabre Springs are not only adapting to the pandemic, they’re overcoming it through "The Joys of Life."Don Bodow started the program to spread happiness and stimulate minds. Through a series of puzzles, games, and activities he helps fellow residents stay positive.“I’m making other people happy,” said Bodow. “Giving them joy simply makes me feel good.”Although they can’t be with their families during the pandemic, many are happy right where they are.“The joy of life is in all of us,” said Bodow. “We may not realize it and it needs to be brought out. You need to accept the fact that there are joys in your life.”One of his most active students is 98-year-old Pauline Hayes.“Some of those words are misspelled and you’re challenged to find them,” said Hayes. “I love doing Joys of Life.”Hayes attends every session and credits the class for keeping her sharp. When we asked her about the secret to life she replied, “keeping positive and keeping active.”Bodow says the program was built on his own experience after spending two months in a coma.“I lost all my memory, all my muscle mass. I had to learn how to walk again,” said Bodow. He’s made an incredible comeback while helping others along the way.“This is never about me,” said Bodow. “It’s making the other people happy, giving them a sense of a full life.”Through the challenges of COVID-19, Joys of Life is touching the lives of residents and staff like never before.Bodow has a collection of puzzles and games on his website. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The former Navy sailor accused of killing four people by driving his truck off the Coronado Bridge and onto a crowd attended a motions hearing Friday.Richard Sepolio faces four counts of gross vehicular manslaughter and DUI. His defense team argued to throw out the DUI charge, as well as crucial evidence, including initial conversations between Sepolio and his arresting officers. The judge concluded that both issues would be allowed in the upcoming trial. The nephew of two of the victims wants answers. Jacob Contreras has flown from Chicago to San Diego a dozen times to follow the case in court.RELATED: Parents of driver in Coronado Bridge crash defend son"I'm here a lot. I'm trying to move here,” Contreras said. "My family hasn't celebrated Thanksgiving in two years. Life is just not the same. It's never going to be the same."Contreras is the nephew of Annamarie and Cruz Contreras of Chandler, Arizona, two of four people killed on October 15, 2016. Like the two other victims, Francine Jimenez and Andre Banks of Hacienda Heights, the couple was attending a fundraising event at Chicano Park when Sepolio’s truck suddenly plunged into a crowd, killing them.Sepolio's high-profile attorney Paul Pfingst argued Friday that his client was not read his Miranda rights while being transported to the hospital for his injuries and therefore, the conversations between Sepolio and responding officers should be inadmissible during trial.RELATED: Facebook Live video captures aftermath of bridge crashCHP Officer Juan Carlos Jimenez read from his notes about the initial conversation."I asked if he felt the effects of the alcohol,” Jimenez said. “He said ‘Yep.’”Officer Jimenez also recalled the moments when he gave Sepolio a Breathalyzer test. He believed Sepolio was attempting to fake the test by only pretending to breathe small amounts of air into the device. The test results showed Sepolio's blood alcohol level was 0.08 to 0.09%. RELATED: Social media: Truck flies off Coronado Bridge, lands on crowdThe defense also argued that responding officers never noted Sepolio had “slurred” speech, implying that he may not have been drunk when the accident occurred. Officer Jimenez remembered that Sepolio’s speech was indeed slurred and that he was complaining of back pain. But he admitted that instead of writing he had “slurred” speech, he noted that his speech was “slow.”Jacob Contreras said he was not buying the defense’s argument. "The slurred speech and slow speech, if you're intoxicated, you tend to do both,” Contreras said. “So my point of view is the defendant was intoxicated.”RELATED: Navy man charged with DUI in crash that killed fourNearly two years since the crash, Sepolio has recovered from his injuries. But two families are still left without answers, still seeking justice. 2876

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The former home of San Diego Padres icon Tony Gwynn has finally found a buyer."Mr. Padre's" Poway home, that had since been foreclosed, was sold on Dec. 13 for ,429,500, according to Realtor.com. The two-acre residence was placed on the auction block in June starting at .2 million. The posted legal notice said that .5 million was still owed on the home. After the auction failed to find a new owner, the lender took control of the property.RELATED: Family of MLB legend Tony Gwynn settles tobacco lawsuitWhen the home remained empty, suspicious activity and reported squatters took up residence inside the estate. In January, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department said they had received nearly half a dozen reports about trespassers at the address over the past few weeks.Realtor celebrity reporter Erik Gunther said the steady price cuts on the property encouraged the new buyer to "take a swing" at the home."After a drawn-out debacle involving squatters and foreclosure, the former home of Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn finally has a new owner," Gunther wrote. "The bank whiffed with their initial price of .12 million, but a steady number of price cuts over the past few months finally encouraged a buyer to take a swing at rehabbing the baseball legend's home."The 7,370-square-foot home features seven bedrooms, 5.5 baths, living room with fireplace, a spacious kitchen and dining room, and its grounds include a basketball court and a pool with a spa. Bad investments by Gwynn caused the MLB legend to file for bankruptcy in 1987, which may have played a role in difficulties holding on to the property after his death from cancer in 2014. The Gwynn family had owned the residence since 1991 for the bank took ownership, according to Realtor. 1784
