DETROIT, Mich. - The number of passengers flying daily in the United State is growing but we’re only seeing a 40% total traffic when compared to a year ago.So airlines are still forced to operate on reduced schedules, some telling us it has created a flight booking headache.With travel down by about 70%, it's been a rough go for the airline industry, but passengers tell me there have been some upsides."Rescheduling the flight was a piece of cake," said one traveler."There's like no one in the middle seat, that’s super nice," said another traveler.Middle seats blocked, no change fees, and more lenient cancellations policies have all made flying much more appealing but traveling during the pandemic also mean dealing with a lot of changes."Saying it was frustrating is an understatement, it was utter chaos," said Kellie McDaniel.McDaniel of Monroe was thrilled about her November trip to the US Virgin Islands, that is until a change by the airline made it so that."Our connecting flights would not match up," said McDaniel.Now, the company did offer her a refund because they could not fix the issue."But then we were left with no airline," said McDaniel. Deshaunta Goolsby loves exploring new hairstyles.“I cut my hair all the time, I color it all the time, it’s a reflection of who I am and how I feel," Goolsby said. "I’ve had it braided to my waist; I’ve shaved it bald. I’ve done just about everything you can imagine to it.”However, it hasn’t always been that way. There was a time in her life when she had to wear her hair the same way at least five days a week.“It was processed, straight style and it was, ya know, shoulder length. It was, I guess, the industry standard.”Goolsby was a news anchor and reporter for 11 years. It was in her last few years that she wanted to transition to a hairstyle that was wasn’t so high-maintenance.“My family and I had gone to the beach one weekend or something and it was maybe midnight Sunday and I’m trying to straighten my hair back out to go to work the next day and it was impossible," Goolsby said. "I was in tears, my husband was helping me, and I just said ‘this is too much.’ So at that point, I did go to my news director and I said ‘hey, I’d like to wear my hair natural.'”In the news industry, it’s common for anchors and reporters to get their hairstyles approved, but it took a few weeks until Goolsby got the green light.“It was a lot of questions at first. ‘How are you going to wear it? We need to see it first.’ It was definitely an approval process.”Goolsby says there was some pushback from the community and she’d be called into the office. However, she also got a lot of praise from people who loved her natural hair.“It doesn’t take much," Goolsby said. "Which is why I love it. I shampoo it, and it air dries, and that’s about it.”Ashleigh Shelby Rosette is a management professor and senior associate dean at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business. She recently conducted four different studies where participants of different races were asked to assume the role of a recruiter looking for job candidates.“We found that Black women with natural hair were evaluated as less professional, less competent, and they were the least likely to be hired,” Dr. Rosette said.Black women with natural hair – like afros, twists or dreadlocks – were compared to Black women with straight hair, white women with straight hair, and white women who chose to wear their hair curly.“Sometimes people equate natural hair with unkept," Dr. Rosette said. "And that’s not even remotely what it is. And so to suggest that a Black woman can’t be her authentic self and be judged on her merit is problematic. I think anyone would find it problematic.”Dr. Rosette says she’s hopeful this bias is changing as more people become aware of it. And the Crown Act – which prohibits bias based upon natural hair – is legislative policy that has been passed in seven different states. Dr. Rosette says she’d like to see the act pass in all 50 states and so would Goolsby. Otherise, they say it’s likely organizations will be missing out on some serious talent.“If they don’t accept you in that place, there’s somewhere else that will. And so maybe that will be the change that people need – that employers who are more accepting, they get the better candidates,” Goolsby said.Optimistic for a more accepting future, Goolsby is teaching her young daughters to be proud of their natural hair. 3284

DELAFIELD, Wis. — A suspect accused of shooting two police officers in Delafield early Friday has been taken into custody, police say.Police said they had not conclusively concluded the identity of the suspect, but he appeared to match the description of Nathanael Benton, 23.Earlier Friday, police said a suspect, identified as Benton, was still at large and considered armed and dangerous. Police say he is also wanted for an incident in North Dakota.Two officers were shot just after 1:30 a.m. Friday in Delafield, police said.Residents in Delafield were being asked to avoid the area of Highway 83 and Golf Road.Delafield police said two officers, one from Delafield police and the other from Hartland police, were responding to a call for service regarding a hit-and-run crash at the Holiday Inn Express and shots were exchanged between the suspect and the officers. The officers were injured.The injured officers were taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.Fargo Police Department have been searching for Benton since Nov. 1 in relation to another incident. DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) - Met with fierce opposition, a plan to install fencing along several miles of train tracks in Del Mar has been put on hold.The plan was put forth by the North County Transit District which operates the Breeze, Coaster and Sprinter train routes.NCTD said it had obtained grants to fund the project, with the goal of stopping people from crossing the tracks illegally. NCTD said the fence would also help prevent erosion.But at the Del Mar city council meeting Monday night, city staff announced the plan had been put on hold.“I had some specific conversations with the executive director. City staff also had some conversations,” said Dave Druker, a Del Mar city councilmember who’s also on the NCTD board.The plan had received criticism from Del Mar residents, who in letters to the council complained about the potential damage to the view as well as restricted access to the beach.City staff announced that NCTD’s executive director said the transit agency will be hiring a consultant to perform a safety study. A fence will be still considered but so will other alternatives like extra signs, public education and additional crossing points. That last point was already on the agenda. The city council voted to move forward on a 0,000 feasibility study that would look at four new crossing points and beach access trails.The crossings would still be a short-term solution. SANDAG has approved a plan to move the tracks off the bluff, which in addition to safety concerns also faces worsening erosion. It’s part of their 2050 plan and is estimated to cost 2 to 3 billion dollars. But so far, the money has not been secured. 1665
DETROIT — At Martin Luther King Jr. High School in Detroit, voters arrived shortly after polls opened ready to vote.However, they were shocked to find out that the precinct wasn't prepared – they had no voting machines.Some voters were turned away while others were unable to vote for an hour and a half. Chris Morris said he showed up to find election workers struggling to find a voting machine. After learning it was in a locked closet, workers said they were left with no key to open the door.Voters say they were initially told to go to the precinct across the street, though that was incorrect information.The delay left avid voters like Sheree Walton outraged."I take it very seriously," she said. "Someone died so I would have the right to vote."Around 8:30 a.m., workers finally had the machine up and running.
