Feeding San Diego is helping bridge the hunger gap in hopes of making it easier for active-duty military, their families, and veterans to get the food they need and deserve. Desiree Mieir is a mom of four. Her husband is currently serving his tenth year in the Navy. She says the high cost of living in San Diego makes it tough to survive here. "It's several dollars of a difference as far as gas goes. Milk, eggs, all your basic necessities," said Mieir. "If we want to go on a day trip, we have to make room in the budget for that." Now, every month, the family gets access to free food at Dewey Elementary School, one of Feeding San Diego's distribution sites. The access gives families some financial relief without compromising the kid's nutrition. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Despite the pandemic, Veterans Village of San Diego held its annual Stand Down event that helps hundreds of veterans facing homelessness every year.From a glance, this year’s event may seem different. Not as many people were there and stations were more spaced out than normal. But the mission remained the same, reaching out to veterans who are at risk or homeless.Darcy Pavich, the Stand Down director, says the goal is to provide Veterans with the resources they need. Whether it’s housing services, medical referrals, or employment services."It’s difficult for them right now to connect with the services because so many doors are closed," says Pavich.What is also different this year is making sure COVID-19 health guidelines are followed. From requiring masks, to hand sanitizing, and making sure everyone practiced social distancing.This took a lot more planning and preparation to make sure Veterans and Volunteers stayed safe.But even with the changes, Pavich says the simple gesture of reaching out to Veterans made a big impact on those that showed up. "It brings a smile to them and they may not have a lot to smile about right now," she said. "I can never find a good reason why a Veteran should not be housed, safe, and comfortable in their own life." 1292

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — FBI investigators are searching for a man they say robbed two Wells Fargo locations over the last two months.The man entered the Wells Fargo at 5522 Balboa Ave. just after 5 p.m. on Sept. 11 and handed the teller a note demanding money, according to FBI investigators. The man then left the bank on foot in an unknown direction.Investigators believe the same man also robbed another Wells Fargo location at 276 N. El Camino Real in Encinitas just after 3 p.m. on Oct. 6. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- High School sports in the fall has been a big question mark due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and next week, the California Scholastic Federation is expected to make a decision as to whether the students athletes will be taking the field. But one local head coach is encouraging parents to step up, and voice their opinion on the matter. Scripps Ranch football coach Marlon Gardinera, has formed "Letfamiliesdecide.org"."So if everybody really wants the kids in school, what we have to do is give them a voice in letting them get back to high school sports. As an example, at Scripps Ranch High School, ninety-four percent of the families said not only do they want their kids back in school, but they want them on campus."Currently, coach Gardinera says the number of players has increased at the Falcons summer's workouts"Parents are deciding they want their kids on campus. Thirty percent more of them are sending their kids out to football this summer. The kids have been cooped up in the house, and parents want them participating in a controlled activity."Of course with safety being the number one priority."We take everyone's temperature, and we ask them five symptom related questions before we let them loose. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Frustrated business owners in the Midway District say an old strip club was a better neighbor than the current property owner, which happens to be a church. The Rock Church bought the strip club, formerly known as The Body Shop, in August of 2018. Now, businesses say nothing has changed except there’s now more trash and drugs. Neighbors say they want the church to clean it up. Noor Shamoon comes to work at Navis Pack and Shop to a very unwelcome sight. “Food, trash feces on wall, on our vehicles.”He says it’s a foul odor and claims people who hang out in the area vandalized the businesses work truck. Employees at the Midas muffler business across the street also say trash and loitering have become huge problems. “We're trying to run a business and it's hard when you have that across the street,” said Gary Stricker. People who work in the area say prostitution is rampant as are drugs. One man reportedly overdosed recently. “I think he maybe shot up some kind of drug or something. We were concerned about him so we called an ambulance,” Stricker said. When The Rock Church dropped the banner over the “nude girls” sign at the former strip club, they promised to clean up the neighborhood. Since the church purchased the property for .3 million, they haven’t touched it. "I hope they do something about that to clean the place up you know,” Stricker said.
