LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Three men and three women were arrested for allegedly toppling and vandalizing a statue of President George Washington in Grand Park, authorities said Saturday.The vandalism occurred about 6:40 p.m. Thursday in the downtown park at 200 N. Grand Ave. in the Civic Center, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.Officers monitoring a nearby protest saw people pulling on red bands tied to the statue's neck, police said.The statue broke off of its base and fell to the ground, where it was spray-painted as the six suspects and others cheered and celebrated, police said.The suspects then hid nearby to change their clothes and conceal items in their backpacks to avoid arrest, police said. But police were waiting when they left the protest at Spring and Temple streets and the six suspects were arrested.Officers recovered items during the arrest including a gas mask, laser pointer, helmet, goggles, arm protectors and change of clothing, police said.The suspects were identified as Elizabeth Brookey, 19, of Burbank; Christopher Woodard, 33, of Los Angeles; Anna Asher, 28, of North Hollywood; Emma Juncosa, 23, of Los Angeles; Andrew Johnson, 22, of Glendale and Barham Lashley, 30, of North Hollywood.The case will be presented to the District Attorney's office for consideration of felony filings, police said. 1351

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Sheriff Alex Villanueva Tuesday said a weekend raid of "a massive underground party" at a vacant Palmdale residence -- despite health restrictions against large gatherings and a statewide curfew in place due to the coronavirus pandemic -- led to 158 arrests and the rescue of a 17- year-old victim of human trafficking.The Saturday night party in the 6300 block of West Avenue M-8 was allegedly organized by a teen promoter who was one of the people arrested when sheriff's deputies descended on the event, Villanueva said."Parties like these often involve drugs, prostitution, underage drinking and violence," Villanueva said at a news conference Tuesday morning outside the Hall of Justice, where he announced the 158 arrests as well as the rescue of the human trafficking victim and the recovery of six firearms from the location."We were able to rescue a girl who was present and categorized as a commercially sexually exploited child," Villanueva said.Involved in the law enforcement operation were personnel from the sheriff's Palmdale Station, the Human Trafficking Task Force, Operation Safe Streets Bureau, Aero Bureau, three mobile field forces and Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics.According to Fox11, which had been tracking the 17-year-old promoter's alleged activities and was on scene when the raid occurred, 116 adults were cited and released for various misdemeanor offenses, while seven people were booked into jail. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Multiple people were injured tonight when a stampede erupted at a gathering to honor slain rapper Nipsey Hussle in Hyde Park.It was not immediately clear what prompted the stampede, which occurred about 8:10 p.m. in front of The Marathon Clothing store near the intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and Slauson Avenue, where Hussle was gunned down Sunday afternoon.One person was critically injured and taken to a hospital, according to Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Workers at Ralphs, Albertsons and Vons/Pavilions throughout Southern California and as far north as Santa Maria ``overwhelmingly'' ratified a new contract with the grocery chains, averting a potentially costly and disruptive strike, union officials announced Thursday. Officials with the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 770, the Los Angeles-area union representing grocery workers, issued a statement saying the deal ``represents the most significant increases in wages and benefits in over 30 years.'' ``This agreement is a first step towards security good, career jobs in the changing grocery industry,'' Kathy Finn, secretary-treasurer of UFCW 770, said in a statement. ``As important as the hundreds of millions of dollars in improvements to members is the way we got to this contract -- by standing together store by store and with our communities to demand recognition of the value we earn these corporations every day.'' Union members cast ballots on the contract proposal Monday and Tuesday. The tentative deal was announced Sunday. The previous contract between the union and the grocery companies expired in March. Grocery workers in June voted to authorize a strike if a contract deal could not be reached -- raising fears of a repeat of the 2003-04 Southland grocery strike that dragged on for 141 days.
