SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police are searching for a gunman who wounded a man in a shooting at a trolley station in the East Village neighborhood.It happened around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday on Broadway between 11th Avenue and Park Boulevard, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.The victim, a man in his 30s, was at the trolley station when a gray sedan pulled up and a man in the passenger seat got out, fired one shot and got back in the car, which fled eastbound on Broadway, Buttle said. A car matching the suspect vehicle's description was later located and impounded for evidence.The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to his left torso, which was not believed to be life-threatening, the officer said.The suspected gunman was described as a 5-foot-7 Black man, about 140 pounds, wearing blue sweatpants. 839

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System and North County Transit District will host the region's third "Free Ride Day" Tuesday, making all fixed-route bus and rail services free for everyone to use throughout San Diego County, ensuring residents are able to reach their polling place and exercise their right to vote."Free Ride Day this year has a different purpose than in past years," said Nathan Fletcher, MTS Board Chair and San Diego County Supervisor. "We are holding it on one of the most important days for our country -- Election Day. We want San Diego residents to have every opportunity to participate in our democracy. Free transit rides all day long will help do just that."Free rides will be honored on all MTS and NCTD fixed-routes services including buses, the trolley, Sprinter and Coaster. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Testimony wrapped up Friday in the trial of a North Carolina man accused of raping and murdering a 79-year-old woman in her Normal Heights home more than three decades ago.Kevin Thomas Ford, 63, is charged with murder and a special- circumstance allegation of murder during a rape in connection with the May 20, 1987, death of Grace Hayden.Ford is accused of strangling the victim. Last year, investigators with the District Attorney's Office's identified Ford as a suspect through DNA evidence, prosecutors say, as well as a single fingerprint he allegedly left on Hayden's stovetop.RELATED: April trial date set for man accused in 1987 rape, murder of San Diego womanTrial testimony indicated that Ford's fingerprint did not yield results on a San Diego County database, but when submitted to a national database, a match was found in connection with Ford's 2015 arrest in North Carolina for making criminal threats.He was subsequently arrested in the summer of 2018.His murder trial began earlier this week at the downtown San Diego courthouse.
