"I thought he was crazy," said Dave Egeler about what his identical twin told him he was going to do to raise ,000 to help two charities dedicated to helping dogs rescued from neglect, dogfighting and other forms of cruelty. This Saturday, Dan Egeler, a retired lawyer and cancer survivor, is planning to run four full marathons in 24 hours. Egeler's goal is to get a lot of people to donate a little bit or a lot to help him get to his goal of ,000. The money will be shared between Waggin' Tails Dog Rescue and Bark Nation which helps dogs recover from the abuse they've been subjected to in dogfighting. Both charities are nonprofit organizations that are driven by volunteers who are dedicated to helping the dogs recover from any physical and mental injuries they've suffered. "Anyone who owns a dog knows they are unconditional in their love," Egeler said. "They provide a lot of joy and excitement in the family and they're just so great to have around so we love dogs."And everyone will be able to keep up with Egeler's progress that will begin Saturday at 1 o'clock in the afternoon because he'll be wearing a tracker.Egeler will start in Dexter and run through parts of western Washtenaw county and on a track at night. He'll end his marathons Sunday at 1 o'clock in the afternoon in Dexter.Click here to find out more about the race, the charities, and where to make a donation. "Obviously it's a strong stress on the body and I plan for that, but I gotta do this and I've got to complete four marathons in 24 hours," Egeler said. "And that's gonna be more of a mental challenge than a physical challenge." This story originally reported by Kimberly Craig on wxyz.com. 1709

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Just before the lunch rush at one New Orleans restaurant, the hottest spot is the kitchen. The place is Café Reconcile: a restaurant that caters to both customers and its employees. “It’s not your typical job. It’s not the typical restaurant,” said Chef Eugene Charles Temple, Jr. “We come in here to change lives.” The café specializes in teaching culinary skills to disadvantaged young people, by training them to take on all aspects of restaurant work. It goes far beyond that, though. The café offers counseling and teaches classes on life skills – like how to open a bank account. “No one’s forcing them to come here,” said Gerald Duhon, Executive Director of Café Reconcile. “They want a change in their life.” Ahmaad Lott felt that first-hand. “To be honest, you know, I wasn’t in a great situation,” Lott said. Several years ago, he was facing mental health issues. Lott got help and eventually rose through the ranks at Café Reconcile to become a trainer to others dealing with similar circumstances. “That was me a few years ago,” Lott said. “I barely know this young person, but to know their story resonates to my story so deeply, and in a way that, you know, we can share our experiences and grow together.” Several thousand young people have graduated from Café Reconcile since it began more than two decades ago. However, the issue of “disconnected youth” is not limited to New Orleans. A 2014 Tulane University study found that, across the country, there are 6.7 million disconnected youth, costing the U.S. economy billion a year in lost tax revenues and needed social services. “The way we look at it is our young people don’t have anything wrong with them,” Duhon said. “What they have that many young people do not have is support—and particularly support around the barriers that are in their life.” It’s a support for which Ahmaad Lott says he’s grateful. “That gave me that avenue, that gave me that channel to really make something of myself,” he said. Lott has now also worked in a five-star restaurant in the French Quarter, following in the footsteps of thousands of others who found refuge at Reconcile. Online interaction with one another has gotten to the point where websites and apps are having to remind us how to act. The neighborhood app Nextdoor has gotten a reputation for sometimes strange posts that can prompt mean and off-color responses. There's a whole Twitter account dedicated to examples. Now, Nextdoor has rolled out a new feature to try and keep some civility online. It's called a "Kindness Reminder." If you try and post a response that's similar to one that's been flagged in the past, you'll get a reminder of the community guidelines and that they can change your response. But you can still post what you want. “One of the problems of the age we're living in is that people don't necessarily share a common understanding of what counts as civil interaction,” said Keith Bybee, a professor of law and political science at Syracuse University.Bybee says some people are strategically not civil or just plain rude in order to attract attention. You see it in politics and trolling behavior. But in the end, civility benefits everyone. “Civility is sort of the lubricant that makes social interaction possible,” Bybee said. “It allows us to live in a diverse, heterogeneous society but nonetheless coordinate our actions for common purposes, so it’s important to find a way to get along with strangers.”Ultimately, you have to care what the other person thinks of you to achieve civility. 1418

Domestic workers often don't have basic legal rights and protections that most workers take for granted. That includes jobs like nannies, housekeepers and home care employees. Now, they’re hoping a new proposed federal labor law will protect them for the first time ever. Nurse June Barrett is used to taking care of others, but today, she feels she's taking a big step to take care of herself. Barrett traveled to Washington, D.C. with about 100 other domestic workers to rally for safer job protections. “He would touch me, kiss me, say horrible things to me,” Barrett says of one of her past employees. As a live-in caretaker, Barrett says she has worked for patients who would sexually harass her. “I suffered in silence,” she says. “I had to suffer all of that by myself.” For decades, federal labor laws have excluded domestic workers from many protections, which has had an impact on about two million nannies, house cleaners and home care workers. Nine states have passed bills to protect domestic workers but now, Congress will consider a bill to ensure those workers earn at least the minimum wage, get paid sick leave and overtime, meal breaks and stronger protections against harassment and discrimination.“We need to have a federal standard, a national standard, so that workers are protected in every state. Not just some,” says Monica Ramirez with the National Domestic Workers Alliance. Ramirez hopes for the first time in history, there will be legal protections for domestic workers in their work environments. It’ll be a historic bill that could provide domestic workers protections most other workers take for granted. “Why aren't we getting the protection that we need?” asks Barrett. “Why shouldn't we get the protection we need?” 1766
