SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 36-year-old man riding an electric scooter suffered severe head injuries when he collided with an SUV at an intersection near Liberty Station.According to San Diego police, the crash was reported around 10:40 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Byron and Rosecrans streets in Point Loma.Investigators determined the man was riding an electric scooter westbound on Byron Street when he traveled through a red light at the intersection, directly into the path of a Volvo SUV driven by a 20-year-old woman.The victim was taken to a hospital with multiple facial fractures, which Police say are life-threatening.The Volvo driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.Drugs or alcohol were not a factor for the Volvo driver, but Police say the scooter rider was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. 861

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 74-year-old woman was pinned between a U-Haul van and a retaining wall after chasing after the runaway van in Valencia Park.After exiting the van Saturday at about 7:30 a.m., the woman failed to set the parking brake, San Diego Police said. As the van started rolling northbound on Valencia Parkway, the woman gave chase.She was re-entering the vehicle when it veered to the left, struck a fire hydrant, a retaining wall, and another vehicle, police say, pinning the woman between the van and the wall.The woman suffered non life-threatening injuries, including a fractured pelvis.SDPD Traffic Officers were investigating the incident Saturday. 673

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A beloved Poway tradition is facing accusations of animal cruelty and breaking the law.A lawsuit filed this week claims horses were illegally shocked in the 2018 Poway Rodeo to cause them to buck wildly for crowds. Two animal activist groups filed the suit; Showing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK) and Animal Protection and Rescue League (APRL).Investigators with SHARK captured video during the 2018 Poway Rodeo, which they say proves an illegal device was used. The video appears to show someone with the rodeo shocking a horse in the holding chute just before releasing them into the rodeo arena.California law outlaws an electric prod or similar device from being used on any animal once the animal is in the holding chute, unless necessary to protect the participants and spectators of the rodeo.The plaintiffs are seeking a temporary restraining order before September's rodeo in hopes to get a court order preventing these devices from used.The animal groups notified the San Diego Humane Society of the alleged abuse, but humane law officers say they got the complaint too late to do a proper investigation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A class-action lawsuit against the University of San Diego wants the school to refund students some tuition fees following the move to virtual learning.The lawsuit, filed by two students, claims the college owes students some of their tuition and fees back due to the switch to virtual learning.The suit says that when the school switched to virtual learning in Spring 2020, students were still charged full tuition even though "USD could no longer provide the promised hours of instruction." The lawsuit claimed that USD also increased its tuition on top of that."Similarly, students paid fees for services and access to facilities and equipment over the full semester. Though USD provided these services and facility/equipment access for only part of the semester, and could not provide them for the full semester, USD demanded that students pay fees for the entire semester," lawsuit documents state.A spokesperson for USD told ABC 10News they have not been notified of or served with the lawsuit.The lawsuit is seeking a "prorated portion of the tuition, fees and other related costs, proportionate to the diminished value of online classes and the amount of time in the Spring 2020 and following semesters when USD ceased in-person classes, campus services and access to campus facilities, continuing through to such time as USD reinstates in-person classes" for the two students who filed the lawsuit and "all others similarly situated." 1470

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A foot pursuit between police and a suspect ended in an officer-involved shooting in the Logan Heights neighborhood Monday.An officer was trying to contact a 30-year-old Hispanic male, later identified as Enrique Aguilar, at about 3:20 p.m. over what he believed to be a narcotics violation, according to San Diego Police Capt. Tom Underwood. Aguilar fled, prompting a foot pursuit in the area of 3400 National Avenue, police say.Police said during the foot pursuit, Aguilar revealed a handgun.VIDEO: Video captures officer-involved shooting in Logan HeightsPAST OIS INCIDENTS: DA releases body cam footage, reviews several officer-involved shootingsOfficers say they ordered Aguilar to drop his weapon.
