SAN DIEGO (AP) — Little Kurt looks like any other baby horse as he frolics playfully in his pen. But the 2-month-old, dun-colored colt is actually a clone. He was created by fusing cells taken from an endangered Przewalski’s horse at the San Diego Zoo in 1980. The cells were infused with an egg from a domestic horse that gave birth to Kurt two months ago. The baby boy was named for Kurt Benirschke, a founder of the San Diego Zoo's Frozen Zoo, where thousands of cell cultures are stored. Scientists hope Kurt will help restore the Przewalski’s population, which numbers only about 2,000. 599

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 52-year-old man was struck and gravely injured Sunday in a San Diego trailer park, and the motorist who hit him in a stolen Hummer was arrested. The incident began just after 11:10 a.m. when the San Diego police received a call from Chula Vista police who were involved in the pursuit of the stolen Hummer, SDPD Lt. Andra Brown said. The Hummer was snatched from a RoadOne impound yard in Chula Vista, SDPD Lt. Bryan Brecht told the media. The vehicle initially crashed at a gas station at 1400 Melrose Ave. in Chula Vista, but continued evading police south on Interstate 5, exiting into a trailer park at 1600 Palm Ave., Brown said.Officers tried to stop the driver but he sped away and hit the pedestrian, Brown said. It appeared the collision was intentional, Brown added. The 44-year-old driver was eventually taken into custody with help from a K-9 dog deployed to stop him, Brown said. The driver was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries before being taken into custody. His name was not immediately available. The victim suffered severe trauma and was unresponsive when paramedics transported him to a hospital, Brown said.Because of the severity of the pedestrian's injuries, the case was being investigated by the SDPD's homicide unit, she said.Anyone with information on this crash was asked to call the homicide unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 1417

SAN DIEGO — The Barbusa Restaurant in the heart of Little Italy is filled with famous guests, so to speak.Celebrity cutouts of the likes of Tommy Lasorda and the late James Gandolfini take up seats at tables closed for social distancing.“It's something just cute, and it makes people just feel comfortable,” Co-owner Joey Busalacchi says.Busalacchi put them there to help make the reopening more festive. Of course, he’d rather have real people in those tables - but can't because of coronavirus restrictions. The restaurant’s normal capacity is about 160, but had to be reduced to 120.That all changed Saturday night - when the Little Italy Association arranged for India Street to be closed to vehicle traffic - allowing restaurants to expand into the street. The extra space meant restaurants, already on razor thin margins, could serve their normal customer load.Barbusa was filled, serving up to 160 patrons.“Covid's not going away for a while, so the more we could get people to eat outdoors the better,” said Marco Li Mandri, the Little Italy Association’s Chief Executive Administrator.Li Mandri says the event was a major success, with good social distancing practices. The association will do it again this Saturday - with even more restaurants open - and could expand it even more in the future.Additionally, the Gaslamp Quarter Association announced on-street dining on Fifth Avenue starting Thursday. The city is also currently weighing a request from the North Park Main Street Association for dining on a stretch of 30th Street near University. 1563

SAN DIEGO — When the pandemic hit, hundreds of people living in San Diego's bridge shelters moved into the convention center, where they could spread out. More than six months later, they're still there. And it's the site of a Coronavirus outbreak. This month, 115 people living in the convention center tested positive for the the virus, and have moved to county-supplied hotel rooms for isolation. The remainder of the roughly 800 residents continue to live on site, now a one-stop shop of services including meals, laundry and finding permanent housing.Bob McElroy's Alpha Project is one of the city contractors serving the shelter.“It saved hundreds of people's lives, we couldn't have operated in the close proximity that we were in with the bridge shelters and Golden Hall and other facilities so it saved lives and I can't put a cost on that,” McElroy said. But the cost is now coming under scrutiny. From April through December, the city budgeted million to the convention center shelter, though most of that is via federal and state funds dedicated to COVID or homelessness. The city is now spending .6 million per month to rent the convention center from its own nonprofit. The Union-Tribune reports that in November, the city spent 0 dollars per person per day for about 900 residents, totaling .7 million. Now with the new outbreak, a group is renewing calls to close the center and place the residents in county-secured hotels subsidized with federal money to stop the spread.“We could have kept several hotels open and the staff employed and put the money back into the local community,” said activist Shane Parmely. The county has secured 806 hotel rooms for people to isolate, about a third of which are currently occupied. In a statement, the city said it will continue to work closely with the county to ensure it is providing the best protection and medical care in accordance with public-health guidelines. The statement added comparing hotel rate does not account for the full cost of supportive services it provides at the shelter. 2064
