The CDC has identified kratom products as the likely source, though a specific brand or supplier has yet to be named.CDC officials recommend people do not consume kratom in any form.RELATED: If it's not the flu, you might be sick because of this virusKratom is an herb that is currently legal in most parts of California and the U.S. The FDA issued a ban on imports of the herb in 2014.In 2016, the City of San Diego also passed a ban on the sale, possession, and distribution of mitragynine and hydroxyl-mitragynine, which are active components in kratom. Since 2014, there have been 10 deaths in the county associated with mitragynine.Salmonellosis is a common intestinal infection traditionally associated with undercooked poultry or eggs, contaminated water, or unpasteurized dairy products. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A World War II veteran is being honored not only for his service to our country but to the San Diego community. With the help of former students, current students, and staff at Hilltop High School in Chula Vista, the library was dedicated to World War II veteran Tom Rice. The lifelong Coronado resident was an Army paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division on D-Day. He was the first to jump out of his C-47 after it crossed the English Channel.RELATED: Retired Chula Vista teacher grateful for war hero's inspirationRice taught U.S. government in the Sweetwater Union High School District for more than 30 years, mostly at Hilltop High. The surprise was unveiled to Rice on Thursday. "Everyone has given me their grace, and I have nothing to return but just my presence, and that was it. So this might be a closure for me, to come back to the old stomping grounds where I spent most my working days, 30 some years," said Rice.RELATED: Coronado D-Day veteran parachutes out of plane over NormandyThe idea to honor Rice initially came from two former students, Kathy Cappos Hardy and Suellen Butler. The two women say Rice didn't talk about the war when he was a teacher; it wasn't until years later they learned of his bravery. "We are honored to know him and honored by what he did for us as students and what he did for our country," said Cappos Hardy.Rice is well known for returning to Normandy to reenact his D-Day jump in honor of those who never made it home. He most recently made the jump at age 97. RELATED: Chula Vista honoring World War II Army veteran Thomas Rice"I do the jumping and try to remember them," said Rice. "Because they were killed, captured, or injured, or walked away, wouldn't talk about, and they didn't ever get a chance to grow up," Rice said to 10News in 2018.The Hilltop High library is officially now the Thomas M. Rice Library and Media Center. 1907

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego-area man and his grandmother filed a federal lawsuit against two San Diego County Sheriff's Deputies. The lawsuit alleges deputies responded to the wrong address and pulled a then-17-year-old out of his apartment. "I've never experienced something like that," said Cesar Jaramillo.Jaramillo says last October he was watching TV on the couch when he heard a knock at the door. He says deputies asked if someone from the residence called 911.According to his lawsuit, "Cesar informed defendants the call was not from his residence. When defendants asked Cesar if there was a young black female in the apartment, Cesar said 'No,' and informed defendants that they were at the wrong apartment building. Cesar knew who defendants were referencing and knew they lived in the other building. Cesar informed the deputies over half-a-dozen times that defendants were at the wrong building."Jaramillo tells 10News he complied with everything the deputies asked but felt like they didn't believe him."That's when I started closing the wide door, that's when he just reached in and grabbed my hand," Jaramillo said. The lawsuit claims, "Without warrant or probable cause, both defendants unreasonably lured Cesar to unlock and open the door, then entered into Plaintiff's residence and forcibly pulled Cesar by the forearms into submission, leaving instant bruises on both arms."Jaramillo's grandmother was in the back of the house at the time and said she woke up to the commotion."I saw my grandson laying on the ground, in handcuffs and I went crazy, and I said, what is happening," said Teodora Villalobos.According to the lawsuit, "Due to unreasonable seizure and force used on her grandson Cesar, as well as defendants' indifferent attitude, Teodora began having heart complications on scene."Jaramillo's lawsuit alleges negligence, battery, and unreasonable search and seizure, among other things.10News reached out to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department for comment, but a spokesperson they can't comment on pending litigation. 2066

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An 87-year-old man was beaten during a home invasion in Clairemont Wednesday afternoon. According to San Diego Police, the incident happened on the 4600 block of Firestone Street at 3:02 p.m. Police say three men forced their way into the 87-year-old man’s home before beating and robbing him. "All of a sudden three guys come plowing through my front door, said 'this is a robbery.' I said, 'Come on ... I got nothing here for you.' Which didn’t dissuade them," said Paul Schmidt. Schmidt told 10News he was working on a ceiling fan with the door open when the men broke in. “I had scissors laying there, he grabbed the scissors and he threatened me with it. He said, 'There’s three of us and one of you, and we’re robbing you.' And what could I do, maybe one or two guys I can handle, but three ..." Schmidt added. Schmidt says he fought back, grabbing one of the robber's beards before one of the men held scissors to his throat. "The guy with the beard, he was the meanest, he seemed to be the lead, but he was higher than a kite," Schmidt said. The robbers were able to get away with Schmidt's wallet as well as his red pickup truck and some smaller items. Police arrested two suspects in the attack on July 25. Both suspects have, as of Monday, been charged with robbery, elder abuse and auto theft. The suspects were identified as John Slobig, 59 and Terry Jones, 53. Police say a third suspect is still outstanding and the victim’s vehicle was returned. 1489
