SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While San Diego has several desirable neighborhoods, Solana Beach may take the cake. That's according to a recent survey by financial website 24/7 Wall St., which named the coastal city one of the best places to live in America. Solana Beach ranked seventh on the list of 50 cities, based on its walkability, commute times, and attractions."Located less than 30 minutes from downtown San Diego, area residents have access to jobs and entertainment located in the major urban area," the website wrote. "The city is also home to one of only three train stations in San Diego County, providing commuters more options. For recreation, the city boasts 1.7 miles of beach, and a higher than average per capita concentration of restaurants, gyms, museums, and movie theaters."The website used data affordability, economy, quality of life, and community to develop its best cities list. Things like crime rates, number of restaurants, employment, income, taxes and home value, and health care statistics all factored into the site's analysis.Cities that made the list included:1. Manhattan Beach, Calif.2. Winnetka, Ill.3. Hanover, N.H.4. Highland Park, Texas5. Piedmont, Calif.6. Paradise Valley, Ariz.7. Solana Beach, Calif.8. Newport Beach, Calif.9. Mercer Island, Wash.10. Greenwood Village, Colo. 1319

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two men wearing masks and gloves robbed a City Heights jewelry store Friday. One of the men jumped a display counter and confronted an employee of the Eclipse Jewelry Store at 4213 University Ave. just east of Interstate 15, police said. One man took jewelry from display trays and put it in a bag while the second man pointed a gun at the employee. The owner told 10News the men got away with about ,000 worth of mostly gold chains. He also said he thought perhaps the men had been in the store before since they seemed to know exactly what they wanted. Both men ran off and were last seen getting into a silver colored late model Toyota or Honda heading east.No one was injured in the robbery. Police did not have detailed descriptions of the suspects. 791

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With COVID-19 cases surging again across California, friends of a local, single dad diagnosed with coronavirus are rallying to support him.Alfredo Huerta, 53, who lives in Linda Vista, first started feeling sick in early November. His first symptom was shortness of breath, which he initially blamed on his asthma."He then feeling started feeling joint pain, his whole body ached and continued to worse. Then he got a fever," said his friend Alana Hoang.Hoang says two Fridays ago, while Huerta was waiting in his primary care doctors office, his conditions worsened."Shortness of breath got worse. He couldn't breathe ... He ended up in the ER," said Hoang. There, Huerta tested positive for COVID-19 and was admitted."He was very scared. He didn't want his kids to have to go through something so traumatic again, like they did with their mother," said Hoang.Huerta, a father of four - two adult children and two teens - lost his wife Sara nearly five years ago to cancer.Alone in the hospital, his thoughts turned to his children."He was afraid he wasn't going to be there for them, so he started thinking the worst," said Huerta.Meanwhile, Hoang started a Gofundme campaign to help the man she says is "part of the family."Huerta, a gardener, has been working with her for 15 years."He is just so kind and gives of himself. He works harder than anyone I've know. We just pray every day he can go back to his normal," said Hoang. This weekend, the news she was waiting for: Huerta was released. He remains weak with some breathing issues. He'll be retested soon, and he's not sure when he'll return to work.Hoang says Huerta has a message for others."Take precautions. I think he would say that ... there were times when he didn't have it, when he should have, so just being cautious with our masks," said Hoang. 1841

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Across California, many businesses continue to struggle in San Diego County, and some business owners say they can’t afford to pay their rent anymore without their usual income during this pandemic.Landlords are also feeling the effects of the small business struggle.“Many tenants are paying their rents, there aren’t many tenants paying their rents from profits,” said Sandy Sigal, CEO of NewMark Merrill Companies. “We’re not going to make any money or have any profits this year at all, we know that, but we do need enough money to pay our mortgages and lenders.NewMark Merrill Companies own about 80 shopping centers in three states, including California. They own 12 shopping centers in San Diego County, from Oceanside to Chula Vista.Sigal said many of his tenants had been hit hard during this pandemic, especially in California.“The category type that we’ve lost lots of tenants are the nail and hair salons, very often run by mom and pops,” he said.In San Diego County, the following seven tenants have closed their businesses permanently.Expedia – Terra Nova Plaza in Chula VistaSouplantation – Piazza Carmel in San DiegoSouplantation - Chula Vista Crossings in Chula VistaPronto Insurance – Tri-City Crossroads in OceansideElements Massage – Nordahl Marketplace in San MarcosShape Threading – Nordahl Marketplace in San MarcosKeller Williams – Rancho Bernardo Village in San Diego“We did what we could to help tenants where they needed it,” said Sigal. “If you’re a small restaurant and you had to close, you were closed for 3 to 4 months; we did what we could to help you, which included rent deferrals and helping you apply for those PPP loans. We bought tarps. We bought fans, and we bought artificial turf. We’re doing what we can.”But Sigal said landlords could only do so much, and it’s up to the government to step in and help save these businesses.“If there was a fire or earthquake or flood, they would have insurance for all this,” he said. “We need to extend what was PPP or The RESTART Act. I’m in favor of some stimulus to the unemployed.”Without additional assistance now, it’s a struggle he expects to continue until significant changes are made, and businesses can fully bounce back.“If the government helps my tenants, I’d be helped enough,” he said. “This is no one’s fault, but the pandemic and we all got to get through this together.” 2393
