LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Chateau Marmont, a Hollywood hotspot for nearly a century, will be converted into a members-only hotel over the next year. The Los Angeles Times reports the owner plans to turn the 91-year-old building into a hotel where a select group of members buys into "a piece of a portfolio of the best real estate in the world." Members will own shares of the property and pay regular fees to cover management costs. In exchange, they'll get the use of a private dining area, a personal butler, and the freedom to leave their belongings and come and go during extended stays.According to the hotel, they are still taking reservations only by phone or email amid the coronavirus pandemic."During these challenging times, our Hotel remains open for the time being," the hotel stated on its website. "We are monitoring the situation each day and continue our operation on a smaller scale and with an even greater focus on health. As with all restaurants in Los Angeles, ours has been closed temporarily for dine-in, following the direction of the mayor." 1073

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Utah man was held without bail Thursday on charges of murder in the deaths of an off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy and another man.Rhett McKenzie Nelson, 30, of St. George, wore a navy blue jail uniform during his initial arraignment in Los Angeles Superior Court as the family of Deputy Joseph G. Solano and uniformed deputies with black mourning bands over the badges looked on.Authorities allege Nelson shot Dmitry Koltsov from his vehicle in downtown Los Angeles on Monday, attempted to kill Aleksandr Chudetckii, then fatally shot Solano inside a Jack in the Box in suburban Alhambra. They also say he committed two robberies in Long Beach.Nelson's family says he suffers from mental illness and an opiate addiction. Defense attorney Jenn Bartick was not immediately available for comment.Nelson is due back in court on July 22 for further arraignment. He did not enter a plea on Thursday before Judge Teresa Sullivan and quietly answered, "Yes, Your Honor," when she asked him if he understood that his arraignment was being extended. The case includes special circumstance allegations of multiple murders, murder by means of discharging a firearm from a motor vehicle and using a handgun in the commission of the crimes. Prosecutors haven't decided whether to seek life in prison or the death penalty if Nelson is convicted.Solano's family hugged each other as they filed out of the courtroom and were quickly shepherded into a back room by prosecutor Antonella Nistorescu.A candlelight vigil will be held for Solano at the Jack in the Box where he was shot Thursday night, according to social media posts by San Gabriel City Councilwoman Denise Menchaca. 1701

LIVE OAK SPRINGS, Calif. (KGTV)- Some residents in the Live Oaks Springs, Boulevard and Jacumba neighborhoods woke up with power. Others in East County haven't been so lucky. Residents without power say the outages happen every year, and they're frustrated. A local store owner in Live Oak Springs says he works hard all year to keep his store running, but the recent power outage will cost him almost a year's worth of earnings. "I lose business, I lose customers, now I lose all my stuff," says Sam Matthe. Matthe has been running the Live Oak Springs Market for four years. He says he's had power outages for the past two years, with some going on for days. Inside the store sits a large deli counter, freezers full of dairy items, produce, and a walk-in meat freezer in the back. Matthe says it's frustrating because he is on a different SDG&E circuit than others in the area. Just a mile north and south, those neighbors have power. "I don't know why. What's the difference?" says Matthe. "(It's) not too windy. They say its the wind, it's not; the wind it's normal."Matthe estimates he will lose more than ,000. SDG&E says some customers will have their lights turned back on this evening. 1215

LONG BEACH (CNS) - The California State University system announced Wednesday that it is planning for an anticipated return primarily to in-person courses starting next fall."While we are currently going through a very difficult surge in the pandemic, there is light at the end of the tunnel with the promising progress on vaccines," CSU Chancellor Timothy P. White said in a statement. He noted that it was critical to provide as much advance notice as possible to students and their families, as the CSU system had done in announcing its moves toward primarily virtual instruction as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. The CSU system, which locally includes CSU San Marcos and San Diego State University, announced in mid-March that its campuses would immediately transition in-person operations to a virtual mode, with the chancellor saying then that "the health and well-being of our students and employees is always a foremost priority."In September, White announced that CSU -- which held primarily virtual courses during the fall term -- would continue with predominantly online instruction for the academic term beginning in January."We are approaching planning for the 2021 fall term with the goal of having the majority of our on-campus experiences returning," said CSU Chancellor-select Joseph I. Castro, who will replace White in January.Officials have not yet determined "what the science will allow" for next summer's term, noting that determination will be made closer to the deadlines for summer 2021 student registration. The CSU system is the largest system of four-year higher education in the country, with 23 campuses, 53,000 faculty and staff and 486,000 students. 1694

Looking to camp out on the couch and take down a show that will keep you up way too late and help you procrastinate from doing more important tasks? Here are five shows to stream.MYTHIC QUEST: RAVEN'S BANQUETPremise: Egos and agendas clash as a goofy bunch of game developers maintains a "World of Warcraft"-style online game.Stars: Rob McElhenney, Charlotte Nicdao, Danny Pudi, David Hornsby.Service: Apple TV+.Why it's impossible to stop watching: Consistently hilarious, the sitcom is a worthy successor to the likes of "30 Rock," "The Office" and "Parks and Recreation." McElhenney and Hornsby, who are veterans of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," bring that show's zany, offbeat feel along with them. This is the jewel in Apple TV+'s first round of releases.THE COMEDY STOREPremise: A docuseries that explores the history of the iconic New York City comedy club, which helped launch the careers of Jerry Seinfeld, Jim Carrey, and others.Stars: Howie Mandel, Jim Carrey, Robin Williams, Chris Rock.Service: Showtime. Why it's impossible to stop watching: If you have any sort of appreciation for the history of stand-up comedy, you'll cherish this passionately told, well-researched docuseries. The raw emotion that comes through in interviews with the comic legends -- who see the club as a second home -- is as charming as it is disarming. The series debuts Oct. 4.WE ARE WHO WE AREPremise: American military brat teens -- who are often left to fend for themselves by distant, self-involved parents -- come of age at an Italian military base.Stars: Francesca Scorsese, Jack Dylan Grazer, Chloe Sevigny, Alice Bragga.Service: HBO Max.Why it's impossible to stop watching: As hard-hitting and visceral as HBO's "Euphoria," the series digs into the brutal challenges and alarming confusion that comes with adolescence. Excellent performances and incisive writing keep the story driving forward. The eight-episode miniseries launched Sept. 14 and wraps up Nov. 2.THE GOOD LORD BIRDPremise: Abolitionist John Brown leads a ragtag crew of anti-slavery soldiers to stage an uprising against slaveholders, leading to a raid on the Army depot at Harpers Ferry.Stars: Ethan Hawke, Daveed Diggs, Wyatt Russell, Joshua Caleb Johnson.Service: Showtime. Why it's impossible to stop watching: Hawke transforms into the charismatic anti-slavery crusader, owning the screen with a formidable presence. A strong supporting cast helps sell the desperation and ambition of the anti-slavery warriors. The eight-episode series debuts Oct. 4.SUPERSTOREPremise: A mix of slacker and go-getters work together at a Walmart-style big box store.Stars: America Ferrara, Ben Feldman, Lauren Ash, Mark McKinney, Colton Dunn.Service: Hulu, Peacock. Why it's impossible to stop watching: Excellent chemistry among the cast makes this sitcom a triumph. Endlessly rewatchable, the series thrives in a constant flow of one-off jokes, as well as an engrossing story that allows characters to develop and change.
