(KGTV) -A nonprofit group is stepping up to find a solution following complaints of people living out of their cars across neighborhoods in San Diego. In February, the City of San Diego unanimously voted to repeal a 1983 city ordinance preventing people from living out of their vehicles. The change cleared the way for vehicle dwellers to live on any street within San Diego. A newly-formed resident coalition is documenting what it says are the problems the ordinance created. The information is being sent to San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer’s office. “We have literally witnessed buckets of waste being thrown out of some of these vehicles. I’ve witnessed drug dealing out of some of the motor homes, we’ve seen bike chop shops operating,” Pacific Beach resident Racheal Allen said. RELATED: Group pressures San Diego leaders to reverse vehicle habitation decisionCity councilwoman Jennifer Campbell recently proposed the city-owned South Shores parking lot near SeaWorld as a designated site for people living out of their cars. Some people had already began using the parking lot as a camping site, but some residents expressed discontent with that solution. The issue is a concern well beyond San Diego’s city limits. A nonprofit group, Jewish Family Services, is now working on a proposal that could potentially turn a privately-owned church parking lot in San Marcos into a designated space for these campers. RELATED: More San Diego residents with children are living in cars because of housing crisis, group saysA San Marcos resident said he’s not opposed to the idea, but he would need to know more about the specifics before taking up a stance on the issue. “How is it going to work, how are they going to control who comes and goes, how are they going to manage the security, the safety, and the health, I think first and foremost, and then what are they going to do if it somehow starts negatively impacting the community,” said Ruben Galvan. Jewish Family Services officials said the group is in the exploration phase of the proposal and is reviewing different sites as options. RELATED: Fake citations being left on Ocean Beach RVs, vans where people may live“If they control the situation it could probably work, for both the unfortunate homeless people and the community, I think they just need to monitor it and say, ‘hey, if it’s not working, we’ve got to figure something different,” Galvan said. 2426

A 66-year-old woman was arrested and preliminarily charged Wednesday with driving into protesters in Indiana.According to the Associated Press, the woman police arrested was Christi Bennett.Hundreds of people were rallying and protesting through Bloomington Monday, following an alleged racist attack at Lake Monroe where several men attacked and apparently attempted to lynch Vauhxx Booker, a Monroe County Human Rights commissioner.Police say an electric scooter had been left in the roadway and a red Toyota passenger car drove up to it. A male passenger then got out and threw the scooter out of the lane of travel. That's when police say a woman approached the vehicle and stood in front of it with her hands on the hood. The vehicle then began to accelerate, according to police, causing the woman to go up onto the hood of the car. The man and woman remained on the vehicle until it turned abruptly onto eastbound 6th Street, throwing both people off, according to police.Police say the owner of the car was staying at a motel in Scottsburg, Indiana. They traveled to Scottsburg and detained the man and woman involved. The man was interviewed and released. Bennett was transported to the Bloomington Police Department to be interviewed, but she and her legal counsel declined to provide a statement. She was arrested on the following preliminary charges:Criminal Recklessness, level 6 felony (two counts)Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, level 6 felonyLeaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Bodily Injury, class A misdemeanor.Bennett was released on a 0 cash bond within a couple of hours, the AP reported.Bennett has not been formally charged. The Associated Press contributed to this story.WRTV's Matt McKinney first reported this story. 1896

1.4 million Americans filed initial claims for unemployment last week, according to weekly statistics from the Department of Labor. That's a slight uptick — about 20,000 additional claims — from the previous week's figures. Last week's report also indicated a slight increase in unemployment claims, the first increase in several months.Thursday's report marks the 19th straight week in which more than a million Americans have filed claims for unemployment. During that time, more than 51 million people have sought unemployment insurance. While figures are down significantly since a peak of about 6 million claims in March, they remain historically high. The report also comes as increased federal unemployment benefits provided through the CARES Act are set to expire. Negotiations are underway on Capitol Hill for another round fo COVID-19 stimulus, but Democrats and Republicans remain far apart on negotiations. In passing the HEROES Act, House Democrats proposed extending those increased benefits, totaling about 0 a week, through the end of the year and extending them to gig workers and self-employed people. However, Republicans said this week they'd like to reduce unemployment benefits to 0 a week for just the next couple of months — a proposal that leaves some deficit hawks in the party uncomfortable. While Democrats say increased benefits will offer assistance to those too sick to work and to those who cannot work if schools are closed due to the pandemic, Republicans argue that the 0 benefits discourage people from working. The report also comes as a surge of cases in the Sun Belt appears to be tapering off, but experts warn that the surge could move north to the Midwest in the weeks and days ahead. 1737
