SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Like pretty much everything else in 2020 Thanksgiving travel looks very different. San Diego International Airport was pretty empty Wednesday afternoon with no crowds or long lines and everyone was wearing masks. While it appeared to be smooth sailing for passengers, airline workers are faced with more of a challenge.“For United Airlines no one has been rehired for the holiday,” said Dante Harris. He’s a flight attendant of 21 years and President of the Association of Flight Attendants Southern California chapter. Harris was one of many hit by massive airline layoffs in October when stimulus money ran dry.“Industry-wide, more than 100,000 employees in the airline industry have been furloughed,” said Harris. “It has been absolutely a disaster.”While he’s not currently flying, some of his colleagues still are. Many of them faced with this problem:“Flight attendants are trying to enforce the mask policy, there are people who get belligerent, people who get non-compliant,” said Harris.Cases across the county are on the rise, yet Harris says some airlines are pushing towards getting back to normal.“Selling alcohol and serving food. We are fighting against that. that is not something we want to go back to right away.”The Auto Club estimates nearly 4 million Southern Californians will travel for Thanksgiving. Three-and-a-half million will travel by car and about 270,000 by plane. If you are heading out for the holiday, keep the following advice in mind.“We’re 35,000 feet in the air and all we have is each other,” said Harris. “We have to have that sense of community to make sure we’re all taken care of. We are asking people to be kind to each other, especially be kind to your flight attendants.” 1743

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's a challenge chickens around the world hope you don't attempt.A Rancho Bernardo man has set a new record for eating Chick-fil-A the most consecutive days in a row — barring the company's usual Sunday closure.Even before the challenge, Mark Mendenhall was a regular at the Carmel Mountain Ranch Chick-Fil-A, with employees dubbing him "Mayor of Chick-fil-A.""I have eaten everything on the menu, except the coffee and tea, I don't like coffee or tea, I've had every sauce," said Mendenhall.RELATED: Chula Vista Chick-fil-A employee saves man's lifeBy day he's a realtor, by dinner he's Mayor. "The food is great don't get me wrong, but it's the people here that make you feel good!" Mendenhall says.Several months ago, he heard about a Georgia man successfully eating Chick-fil-A 100 days in a row, excluding days when the restaurant is closed. "I thought to myself, I could do that! I could totally do that!" said Mendenhall.RELATED: San Diego County woman believes ultrasound image resembles late fatherHis wife, reacting differently."At first, I thought it was a little crazy, and I didn't think he'd stick with it, but then I could tell he was serious about it," said Mendenhall's wife, Laura. On a family trip to Disneyland, Mendenhall actually drove from Disneyland to his Chick-fil-A, ordered his meal, and then went back to Disneyland. "My dear wife asked me, when is all of this going to end?!" Mendenhall laughs. He decided he'd end the challenge when they went on vacation, so his wife promptly planned one to Palm Springs. Throughout the journey, Mark took a picture each day with employees, friends, and strangers, proof of his amazing streak. But his mission had another cause. Mendenhall also helped raise nearly ,000 for the Poway Unified School District Adopt-a-Family program through the challenge. 1846

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Inside Richard J. Donovan State Prison's 30-foot concrete walls, metal doors, and electrified fence is the Echo Yard. It's drawn attention as one of the state's most innovative programs for bringing together inmates of different security levels on the premise that they will coexist peacefully in exchange for some freedoms. The Echo Yard, the state's first non-designated yard, also aims to keep released inmates out of prison.Around 50 percent of people convicted of a crime in California are sent back to prison within three years, according to a 2019 state auditor report. Members of Echo Yard get greater access to self-help, educational, vocational, and rehabilitative programs through courses like anger management, victim awareness, job hunting, and money management. Early recruitment efforts were sluggish when the program was introduced a few years ago. While the prospect of better resources and a possible early release sounds promising, inmates had difficulty embracing the concept of sharing spaces with a potential rival."When we first interviewed maybe about 900 guys, we probably got about 30 of them that said, 'yeah, I'll give it a try' ... because they know prison politics are alive and well," said Daniel Paramo, a former warden at RJD.WATCH: Menendez brothers help paint massive mural as part of innovative prison programThe rules in the Echo Yard are far removed from the prison politics and policies made up by inmates designed to help keep the peace. Instead, the Echo Yard emphasizes inclusion. There is a ban on gang affiliation and racial segregation. It also welcomes transgender inmates and those convicted of sex crimes.Inmates of various backgrounds are housed together regardless of their designation (Sensitive Needs Yard or General Population). One of the men that entered into the experimental program said the environment is a culture shock."There’s so much diversity here; it’s a shock to the system…I am adjusting, but it’s rough," inmate Mike Briggs told the California Innocence Project blog.In 2018, the California Innocence Project said 780 men transitioned into the program, which is made available to those that demonstrate good behavior or show a commitment to Donovan's prison jobs. 2261

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Locals will no longer have to rely on trips to Harrah's Resort or Downtown Disney to satisfy their Earl of Sandwich fix.The sandwich shop's downtown San Diego spot, the county's first, is now open for hungry locals but will hold its grand opening Saturday, according to the shop. The new sandwich shop can be found at 690 1st Ave.A cult following has developed behind Earl of Sandwich, with its popular sandwiches like The Full Montagu (roast beef and turkey), The Original 1762 (roast beef and cheddar), and Holiday Turkey (turkey, cranberry sauce, and stuffing) sandwiches.RELATED: Michelin identifies several San Diego restaurants as 'hidden gems'The restaurant chain is named after John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. Montagu has long been considered the inventor of the modern sandwich, ever since he is said to have requested the dish while putting in some long hours at the gambling table. But guests are locked into sandwiches at the stop. Earl of Sandwich also sells a variety of freshly tossed salads, wraps, desserts, and several on-the-go items. The shop is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday - Friday, and opens at 10 a.m. on Saturdays. 1177

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Memorial Day Weekend kicked off Friday night on the USS Midway. As a part of their Legacy Week, they had their annual benefit concert. This year, Daughtry took the stage. Kevin Beam is a big fan and made sure to buy his tickets early, “you got Memorial Day Weekend, Daughtry and beautiful San Diego”. People filled the top deck of the Midway. Ahead of the concert, the USS Midway Foundation presented three ,800 checks to different local charities. The night served as a way for people to remember and honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Penny Erickson was especially grateful for the event Friday, “I’m from a military family my dad was from Pearl Harbor so it means a lot to me.” Chuck Erickson is a volunteer for the USS Midway and a veteran. Friday night, he tells 10News he’s making sure he is grateful all weekend long, “a lot of people lost their lives giving us the freedom we have today”. The USS Midway will have there Legacy Week events through Memorial Day. 1009
