SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Fire crews responded to a first-alarm brush fire in an east San Diego neighborhood Saturday.The fire ignited near the 5700 block of Bates Street around 1 p.m. in the Redwood Village neighborhood of east San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Lifeguards say beach attendance was much larger compared to a typical weekend, but drastically smaller than the usual Independence Day crowds. Still, lifeguards conducted hundreds of rescues along San Diego's coastline.America's big beach birthday bash was not as jam-packed this year."We didn't know what to expect," San Diego Fire-Rescue Lifeguard Lt. Andy Lerum said. "We thought maybe with LA beaches and Orange county beaches closed, we'd see an influx, but we didn't really."Lt. Lerum says only about 200,000 to 300,000 people came to San Diego beaches this July 4th weekend, compared to over 1,000,000 visitors in years past."Obviously, with the fireworks being canceled, people didn't camp out all day waiting for them," Lt. Lerum said. "So parking lots were full; however, the beaches and parks were not at full capacity."This meant leftover trash was not nearly as bad either. Volunteers of the local Surfrider Foundation spent a fraction of their usual time picking up Sunday morning.Those who did come to the beaches could not wait to dip their feet in the sand."For three months, we are in quarantine, and so it was so hard for me!" Fay Beygi said.Only a few people were seen wearing masks, as many visitors stuck together with their families, or were in the water.While some were hoping for more enforcement, lifeguards shifted their focus on the dangerous high surf. On July 4, 2020, they conducted about 300 rescues — 197 of them were at the La Jolla Windandsea. That number includes responding to swimmers in distress, stingray patients, and boating emergencies.While that is a lot for a typical day, lifeguards say that it is less than half of the usual July 4 numbers. Still, they say Windandsea is a popular place where even experienced surfers and swimmers can get washed away."Avoid rip currents when you can," Lt. Lerum said. "If you get stuck in a rip current, try not to panic. Swim parallel to the shore and go back to shore. And please, supervise your young children. Watch them very carefully."A high surf advisory is in effect this weekend until 12 p.m. on Monday, bringing rip currents and generally hazardous conditions for swimmers. The high surf also could bring some minor flooding to low-lying areas during high tide, including in La Jolla, Del Mar, and Cardiff, according to the National Weather Service. 2377

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher and other local health and community leaders urged San Diegans to put their focus on the fight against the coronavirus instead of the restrictions placed on businesses due to the pandemic.During a Monday morning press conference, Fletcher specifically called out fellow Supervisors Jim Desmond and Kristin Gaspar, who have been pushing for reopenings.“In particular Supervisors Jim Desmond and Kristen Gaspar are inciting a fight between government and small business. They’re exploiting the pain and suffering that small businesses are going through as a result of a global pandemic as a wedge for political gain. It is reckless and irresponsible leadership,” Fletcher said.Fletcher’s comments come as San Diego County inches towards the possibility of moving from the red tier into California’s most restrictive purple tier.In response to Fletcher’s remarks, Gaspar issued this statement:“This morning Supervisor Fletcher held a hellfire and brimstone press conference in which he ironically and incorrectly blamed me for playing politics with COVID. Let me set the record straight: I have never supported any approach to re-opening that was not specifically supported by our Public Health Officer and clinical leadership team. Supervisor Fletcher knows this but prefers to continue spreading this false narrative because he is actively running a campaign against me. I measured the distance between our office doors, and it is 7 feet, so he and I can actually have a socially distanced conversation anytime he isn’t holding a press conference. Gavin Newsom said during a news conference that the county could be dropped from the list by Tuesday.Sunday, Aug. 16, was the fifth consecutive day San Diego County reported fewer than 100 positive coronavirus tests.State and county officials have said counties would be removed from the monitoring list if rates remain below 100 positive cases per 100,000 people for three straight days.Of the state's 58 counties, 42 remain on that list; five counties were added, with Santa Cruz County falling off Aug. 14."This is a dynamic list. People come on, people come off, the numbers shift every single week," Newsom said Monday. "I anticipate this week the numbers to shift again and it looks like, all things being equal and the latest reporting period -- 24-hour reporting period, which we will have later this evening -- it's very likely San Diego will join the list of those counties removed. So, likely tomorrow."County health officials were expected to announce the latest local statistics on Monday afternoon.For K-12 schools to potentially reopen for in-person instruction, San Diego County will have to reach 14 straight days with positive virus cases below 100 per 100,000 people.As many as 48 elementary schools in the county have filed waivers that in hopes of returning to in-person classes. 1417

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Residents in Ocean Beach are taking their concerns over what they say is a dangerous intersection to the OB Planning Board.Isaac Darby, Vice President of the OB Neighborhood Watch, says the intersection in question is Saratoga Ave. and Ebers St., situated near a children’s park and blocks away from Ocean Beach Elementary.The OB Neighborhood Watch group wants to see a four-way stop sign at the intersection. “People kind of pick up momentum seeing that the stop sign on Santa Monica is the last one all the way before the stoplight at Voltaire, so it’s kind of the last stop before you just can bonsai out of town,” said Darby.In addition to speeding, he says large trucks are often parked on the street causing blind spots. Darby says the intersection is most dangerous during the morning and evening commutes, for both drivers and pedestrians.Darby’s initial application to the city for a four-way stop sign was denied; he was told it didn’t meet city requirements. Now he and other residents are taking their concerns to the OB Planning Board in hopes of building a stronger case.The OB Planning Board Chair says the board can request a traffic study. Once it's complete, the city will review it and make a recommendation. “My plea is do something proactive before we have to be reactive and someone gets hurt or worse,” said Darby. “A lot of the little accidents and fender benders aren’t reported.”Darby says the community is only growing and that they hope to get ahead of problems. 1518
